My brother-in- law, Chuck Taylor, and I participated in this Living Flag, along with 10,000 U.S. Navy Personnel at Soldier’s Field in Chicago on July 8, 1967
I wrote the words below on my own on Memorial Day, 2019. Not everything you read on FB is a copy and paste.
Today, Memorial Day, you may kneel before the Flag of the United States of America. While you are kneeling, stop thinking about your own personal causes and issues with our country. Take time to pray about those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for your Flag and your Freedom.
Pray for those sailors having breakfast aboard the USS Arizona when over 350 Japanese planes attacked from beyond the hills killing over 2000 American Military.
Pray for those Marines landing, with 1600 dying, in Guadalcanal as they waded through sand, mud, water, and bullets. Our courageous and well-trained Marines won that battle, taking out over 22,000 Japanese troops.
Pray for those young soldiers on patrol in Vietnam when two 13year old Viet Cong children approach them innocently carrying friendly looking Coca Cola bottles loaded with explosives.
Today, over 200 years after Americans fought for our Freedom, we are still fighting, not just for ourselves, but for the Freedom of others who can't or won't. Our troops are in dark, wet, hot, dangerous, and deadly places in so many corners of the world.
Oh, and while you are kneeling and praying, ask that the fighting stops someday. Ask that the families of those we lost find some kind of comfort in the sacrifices made by their loved ones. Ask that we figure out how to unite and work on solutions in our world, instead of fighting over our issues.
You can get up now. Perhaps after all that praying, you might just feel a need to look straight at that American Flag and salute proudly, then take a moment to wipe those tears from your eyes. We are Americans. We still have a lot to do. Let's do it together.
