"On the 8th February 1943 the Chindits commenced their advance into Burma from Indian base town of Imphal.

Wingate issued his Order of the Day as the Chindit Columns commenced their crossing of the Chindwin River on 13th February:"

'Today we stand on the threshold of battle. The time of preparation is over, and we are moving on the enemy to prove ourselves and our methods. At this moment we stand beside the soldiers of the United Nations in the front line trenches throughout the world. It is always a minority that occupies the front line. It is still a smaller minority that accepts with a good heart tasks like this that we have chosen to carry out. We need not, therefore, as we go forward into the conflict, suspect ourselves of selfish or interested motives. We have all had opportunity of withdrawing and we are here because we have chosen to be here; that is, we have chosen to bear the burden and heat of the day. Men who make this choice are above the average in courage. We need therefore have no fear for the staunchness and guts of our comrades.

The motive which has led each and all of us to devote ourselves to what lies ahead cannot conceivably have been a bad motive. Comfort and security are not sacrificed voluntarily for the sake of others by ill-disposed people. Our motive, therefore, may be taken to be the desire to serve our day and generation in the way that seems nearest to our hand. The battle is not always to the strong nor the race to the swift. Victory in war cannot be counted upon, but what can be counted upon is that we shall go forward determined to do what we can to bring this war to the end which we believe best for our friends and comrades in arms, without boastfulness or forgetting our duty, resolved to do the right so far as we can see the right.

Our aim is to make possible a government of the world in which all men can live at peace and with equal opportunity of service.

Finally, knowing the vanity of man's effort and the confusion of his purpose, let us pray that God may accept our services and direct our endeavours, so that when we shall have done all we shall see the fruit of our labours and be satisfied.

O.C. Wingate, Commander,
77th Indian Infantry Brigade.'

New regs for Operation Longcloth Preservation March 2023

13th Bn The King’s (Liverpool) Regiment (The King’s) Peter F. Snell Beer at 'Piccadilly', Burma April 1943. “ He (Wingate) was given a British Battalion which, on the surface, could hardly have been worse suited for the task he had in mind. This was the 13th King’s (Liverpool). They had been...

This quote recorded by the BBC reporter attached to Longcloth.. Says a lot.

"Most of my Chindits are not in their first youth," he replied, "but married men between twenty-eight and thirty-five who previously had done coastal defence work and never dreamt they would be shock troops doing one of the toughest jobs of this war. But I selected them deliberately. If ordinary family men from Liverpool, Manchester, and so on, can do this specialised jungle war behind the J*p lines, then any fit man in the British Army can do likewise, and we show ourselves to the world as fighting men second to none—which I believe we are.

It is highly important for the making of the peace after the war that the British race should prove themselves again to be supreme fighters. Should we fail, most of us will never be heard of again; should we succeed, we will have demonstrated a new style of warfare to the world, bettered the J*p at his own game and brought nearer the day when the J*p will be thrown bag and baggage out of Burma."

Normandy Breakout- 7-9 October 2022. Camp Atterbury IN.

Tents, Barracks, and slit trenches.

We are staying on FOB 3 this is the rear area where registration, parking, military vehicle motor pool, and general rear area sleeping will take place.

Hard structure building (bareacks)- we have a dinning facility that can accommodate cots on a first come first serve basis. It does have power, water, and lights.

Tent camping- we have substantial amount of grassy areas that you can set up tents. The ground is more suitable for metal stakes vs wooden. There will be separate camping areas per country set up. If you have tentage feel free to bring it.

Slit trenches- you have the ability to stay in the field Friday and Saturday night in a defense if you so choose. There is no tentage minus a ground sheet, gas cape, shelter half, Zelt will be permitted forward of the rear area FOB 3. Unless a HQ element moves fwd. Vehicles with tarpaulins are ok. All slits must be filled in after use.

Water, toilets, showers- we have potable water onsite, electricity on site, toilets will be porta johns. In the field certain objectives will have PJs at them. Cat holes, proper dug latrines are authorized for use in the field as long as they are covered and filled properly. There are no shower facilities.

Please feel free to comment or contact us at [email protected] with questions or concerns.

Photos are of the FOB. The Green roof building is the first come first serve sleeping hard structure. You must provide your own cot.

Unit commanders please get this out to your guys.
