This October I will taking part in Crochet Challenge.
My daughter Ruby was hospitalised at 8 weeks old with Sepsis.
As a first time mom and with little awareness of Sepsis I feel, looking back, I did miss quite a few obvious signs.
- Ruby was mottled. You always get told that newborns are mottled however, Ruby was mottled even when she was warm and she was mottled all over her torso.
- Bringing up feeds. Ruby was being sick at every feed. Almost her whole feed every time. As a fist time mom being told you have a “sicky baby” normalised this scenario which meant I did not raise the alarm as soon as this started happening.
After ringing 111 the operator asked me questions about Ruby and her feeding which gave me a moment of realisation that what was happening wasn’t normal.
An ambulance was dispatched and we were taken to our nearest hospital. Ruby underwent a lumbar puncture and was treated for Sepsis. She was admitted to the children’s ward for 7 days and then spent another 7 days as an outpatient, returning everyday for IV antibiotics.
Being aware of the symptoms of sepsis is so important and as a mother I’d I have ANY concerns about any symptoms my children are showing I call a healthcare professional.
Forever grateful to the staff at New Cross for their fast action.
This October I will be taking part in the crochet challenge which requires you to crochet every day of October.
Every day I will crochet a “granny square” these will be crocheted together to form a patchwork blanket. This blanket will be raffled off on 1st November. For every £1 you donate you will get one entry to the raffle. This raffle will be running from page so go follow to keep updated!!
