The Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition took place on 27-29 May 2024, gathering 2,000 attendees from the global energy value chain at a 3-day high-level conference sharing insights into transitioning the E.U.’s energy system to one based on renewables and in line with the REPowerEU initiatives.
Some key takeaways from the Strategic, Hydrogen & Decarbonisation, and Climatetech conferences include:
-Flexibility and pragmatism is needed by governments, regulators and industry
-Hydrocarbons will still have a role to play as the energy mix increases
-The political driver behind the transition is now less about net zero targets and more focused on energy independence and security

Ivor Kadragic, Associate Director, CDP, acknowledges that organisations in hard-to-abate sectors may have to reduce their emissions by 95% to achieve 2050 targets. His team supports companies in understanding the business impacts of implementing their transition plans, advises on best practise, and set science-based targets to reduce carbon emissions.
Speaking in a Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023 interview, he said "Hard to abate sectors must reduce their emissions by 95% by 2050, and what is remaining must be neutralised via carbon removal. There are many types of organisations in this sector, the smaller ones must measure their environmental impact and engagement with the value chain and report on this, and larger businesses should already be accustomed to this. They should then look at the activities they undertake and set sales-based targets that are in line with scientific pathways and show how emission reductions reflect in their financial statements, to understand the opportunities with climate change."

Nevin Alija, Founder, Mulheres na Energia Portugal explains that for the energy transition to succeed, regulatory frameworks that incentivise industry to focus on producing green energy must be in place. As association partners to the Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition, Nevin and an expert all-female panel contributed to the conference programme by discussing the role of hydrogen, its implementation as a viable fuel in the future energy mix, and the latest technologies to make this a reality.
Speaking in a Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023 interview, she said "After many years of crisis and a clear cast of resilience, one of the main challenges for the industry is to going strong. Keeping up with the rhythm and the focus towards green, clean energy is one of the main objectives, and for that we must see all of the regulatory frameworks that incentivise industry towards it in place. It is a challenge for the industry itself to react to these regulatory changes and for policymakers to make changes that adequately reflect the challenges in each market."

Hugo Espirito Santo, Partner in McKinsey & Company explains that recruitment and talent, faster funding, and diversification and security of value chains are key challenges Portugal and Europe will need to overcome whilst driving the energy transition. He proposes that forming partnerships and creating better potential economic opportunities during this period will be part of the solution.
Speaking in a Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023 interview, he said "We have seen that we have unique conditions in the energy transition, but we need to now move faster. We need to deploy incentives faster and ensure companies are willing to invest in all conditions and that they invest fast enough. If we want to be successful, we must do it in an ecosystem that promotes partnerships in order to deliver."

Tove Bruvik Westberg, Ambassador of Norway in Portugal explains that Norway has many companies committed to the green transition in the sectors of carbon capture storage, batteries for electric vehicles, and hydrogen. She suggests that collaboration, political commitment, and cross border regulatory framework amongst countries is vital when scaling up projects and fostering big investment.
Speaking in a Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023 interview, she said "a cross-board regulatory framework is of utmost importance to foster large scale investments, particularly carbon capture and storage, where it is vital that we have a cross-board framework in place to enable us to capture and store in different places – and Norway is at the forefront of this. The industry needs large-scale investments and political commitments, which Norway is also communicating".

Mariana Figueiredo, Legal Member, Future in Energy Leader in Portugal, explains that finding the balance between environmental sustainability, energy security, and economic visibility is crucial when overcoming key challenges surrounding the energy transition. She suggests that stakeholders including governments, financial institutions, investors, and the community need to combine forces to ensure the energy transition is not only affordable but encourages economic growth, especially within geopolitical and sensitive regions.
Speaking in a Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023 interview, she said "We know, historically, this sector has been heavily dependent on fossil fuels, that now needs to transition into renewable energy so that we tackle climate change. As such, substantial scale and speed are needed, which involves substantial cost, significant investment, significant infrastructure development and significant policymaking. Energy security also comes from the transition to renewable energy".

Antonio Comprido, General Secretary, APETRO explains that regulators and policymakers need to create the correct framework for investors to feel confident about investing in the energy transition. He highlights the importance of creating a non-imposing environment for consumers to accept the transition, and that we should talk not only about the current climate impact of the polycrisis, but also inform about the social and economic impacts of doing nothing.
Speaking in a Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023 interview, he said "we need consumers to accept the changes they are going to face, we cannot impose these changes on people and we need to create an environment where people want to join the transition. We must think about the economic and social impact together with the climate and environmental impact... and to build a greener world we must consider all dimensions and reach alignment from all players".
