UK ELECTRO 40TH ANNIVERSARY
Entering the chart at #60, 40 years ago today, ‘Street Sounds UK Electro’ was the only homegrown inclusion in the long-running ‘Electro’ series that had such an impact on British youth in the pre-rave years.

It was the first UK dance album to make extensive use of samples, and a precursor for what would happen later in the decade, with British acts like Coldcut, M/A/R/R/S, S’Express and Bomb The Bass. The LP was largely made up of three main elements – an Emulator sampling keyboard, a LinnDrum drum machine, and long hours of tape editing.

It was my first foray into record production, working alongside Manchester musicians, Martin Jackson and Andy Connell. Although the LP was presented as a compilation of new British artists, we were responsible for all but one of the tracks - The Rapologists being the exception. Morgan Khan had suggested we come up with a variety of artist names, whilst he added fictitious production credits. Four projects resulted – Zer-o, Syncbeat, Forevereaction and Broken Glass (the latter being the breakdance crew I then managed, whose recording, ‘Style Of The Street’, was an early UK hip-hop release, and a vinyl debut for Kermit, later of the Ruthless Rap Assassins and Black Grape, who fronted the track with fellow crew member, Fiddz).

Mixed together by Mastermind, the album was released into the summer of ’84, with three 12” singles immediately following, by Syncbeat, Forevereaction and Broken Glass, featuring remixes I worked on with Craig Bevan, the engineer for the underground New York label, Vintertainment. Photos from official photographer coming soon, we’d just like to thank everyone who was at The Warehouse Leeds last night for 1994 Revisited, the 5 awesome DJs, club staff/tech and most of all, you people who make it all possible! What an awesome crowd you were, from the first bunch waiting to get in at 9pm to the hardcore still rocking when the sun was shining outside at 4am. The age range spanned 60 years from youngsters checking out how we used to do it to a couple both in their 70s, legendary!!!
With regards to future events, we’d like some feedback from you as it may be a case of scaling down the budget and more than likely going to afternoon events, don’t think for a second that the music would be any less awesome with local DJs being able to raise the roof just as good as the big boys/girls 🙏

1994 was the year that Hard House really took off in clubs across the UK and one such advocate of the genre was the late great Tony De Vit. Just over a week after Saturday's event marks the 26th Anniversary of his death.
