Another fantastic event from the Whangarei A&P Society! We sent over 100kg of compost to our community composting hubs thanks to and 24kgs of cans to . We achieved a total diversion of 61% of waste away from landfill - woohoo!

Big shout out to our 2 superstar volunteers Gwen and Rex, to the team from for coming onboard with the clean up - and of course for the epic bin stations that help us to do this mahi.

Remember to do the right thing with your fireworks leftovers so we can avoid anymore fires!

🔥 URGENT: Please do not put used fireworks in your paper-recycling!

Unfortunately we had a fire this morning in Whangaumu Bay, when used fireworks caught alight and had to be dumped, then extinguished by volunteer firefighters.

🧨 HOW TO DISPOSE OF USED FIREWORKS 🧨
1️⃣ Please soak used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight.
2️⃣ Put the wet fireworks in your standard rubbish bag - they cannot be recycled

A huge Congrats to Semenoff Stadium and Whangarei Lions Club for a fantastic event last night. With a total of 311.5kg’s of rubbish in total, only 96.5kg was sent to landfill - a whopping 69% diverted, woohoo!! 🥳 🎆🎇

We couldn’t have done it without the help of our amazing team of volunteers and the rugby team from Whangārei Boys' High School who were there right till the end ♻️💚

Thanks again to Semenoff Stadium for being such great supporters of our mahi and EcoSolutions; a CBEC enterprise. For helping us to compost! Team work makes the dream work!!

The Whangārei Fireworks Spectacular is on this Saturday 2nd November and we need you!
🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️🙋

We are looking for 10 volunteers to join our green team. During your short 2-hour shift you will help to educate people on the right place to put their rubbish and answer any questions they have about recycling ♻️

No experience necessary - we’ll tell you everything you need to know on the day.

Shifts are 5.30pm-7.30pm and 7pm-9pm. We need 4-5 people per shift.

In exchange for doing this super easy job, you will receive 3x free tickets to the event and a sassie sizzle on the night. 🙌

If you have a can-do attitude and love the planet - this is for you!

HUGE congrats to the Whangarei Maritime Festival for an epic event over the weekend. We sorted through almost 200kgs of event waste and diverted more than 50% away from landfill!

This is a huge achievement as we are now emptying and sorting the council bins in the Town Basin too - thanks to Citycare Property

The best way for you to help us divert waste away from landfill is to use our colourful bins and take a moment to think more, so that together we can waste less!

October 21-27 is Recycling Week!
This week we will be focusing on reducing our waste through:

☑️Reviewing the items that we procure to check if they can be reused, repaired, repurposed or recycled
☑️Trying to avoid producing landfill waste
☑️Reusing the items that we already have
☑️Ensuring our recycling materials are sufficiently cleaned of contamination, and put into the correct recycling bin
☑️Reflecting on our personal waste footprint and setting goals
to reduce it going forward
☑️Finding items at home and work that are no longer used, and finding sustainable alternatives for them than sending to landfill (like repurposing, repairing and donating)

We are proud to be joining New Zealand in taking action to reduce our waste this Recycling Week.

An epic result from the Whangārei 1/2 Marathon yesterday thanks to the Sport Northland Events team - 79% of all waste diverted away from landfill - with a whopping 50kg of Banana peels heading to our community composting hubs. Great work team!

This makes us want to pick up a hobby with a mission.

OLAUG—Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage—search and remove underwater garbage in Cape Cod. And they have a lot of fun doing it. Why the very specific and straightforward name?

There are a few requirements to join the club. You must be able to swim a half a mile in under 30 minutes, be at least 64 years old, and be able to free dive at least eight feet. That, and a desire to clean up Cape Cod waters, and you’re in. After a day’s work, they’re paid in cookies and hot chocolate by 84-year-old founder, Susan Baur. 🍪

We are super stoked to have teamed up with the Citycare Property team who are going to help us collect event waste around the HATEA Loop Whangarei during events so that our data is more accurate and we can divert more waste at each event ♻️👍😊

… AND !!!

they are going to donate much needed green waste to our community composting hubs from the local Whangārei city gardens, including the beautiful Laurie hall carpark, which currently has loads of kale growing! The kale is free for the community to take, go and help yourself before the pull it out! 🐛🌱
