“Can’t I just do it myself?”

I hear this question a lot, from cautious people who might be worried about spiralling events costs and optimists who think certain aspects of event planning don't take very long.

In this latest blog post on our website we explore why many growing businesses are instead choosing to outsource their events, instead of going town the DIY route.

Read it in full here:

One for the animal lovers out there - it's love your pet day!

🧡🐶🐰🐱🦎🧡

Yes I know this is a business account, but this handsome dog (see photos for proof of handsomeness) is very much part of the Vodka on Toast story.

Part of the reason I wanted to take the leap into business was my aspiration to rescue a dog.

Not all business goals needs to be about business outcomes.

This was a question of quality of life for me, and I knew that a more flexible job was my best shot at making space for a pooch.

This is Marley. He's a good boy.

Not only does he keep me honest by getting me away from my laptop for his daily walks but he also accompanies me on site visits sometimes, and likes to hang out when I'm hosting meetings and presenting.

(Did anyone clock the early-lockdown video call set up, by the way? 🤭)

So here's to Marley, and to all of your pets today. Let's crack open the good treats and show them some love.

Does throwing away waste at the end of your event bother you? 😡

Us too!

Until we've perfected the art of the zero-waste event, at present the industry is faced with an ongoing issue; events are inherently very wasteful.

So we've decided to share a few ides with you for how you might manage waste after your next event in our blog:

What a brilliant time it was working in telly. As a freelance gig, this was one of my faves.

I can't speak highly enough of the experiences team and consider myself lucky to have delivered some really fab events for them last year including festivals in the woods, tea and cake on the cobbles at Coronation Street, talent parties and for a big showy finish, the red carpet at Palooza.

I still haven't seen an episode of Love Island yet, but I certainly loved this job have taken away so much from the experience.

I am not clairvoyant.

When I sat down to write this blog post, it was supposed to be titled “Event trends in 2023” or “What’s next for the future of the events industry?”

But I’ve found myself at a loss.

After an entirely wild and unpredictable three years for the events industry, the only thing that feels precedented about these times is how repeatedly unprecedented they are.

As the director of a proudly small and enthusiastic events agency, I’ve often wondered what sort of authority I am on such topics anyway. Instead of making a bunch of un-researched predictions, or purporting myself to be someone that knows what’s around the corner, I’m going to take this opportunity to reflect instead.

So here's some personal reflections on trends and patterns that I’ve expereinced for myself this year, and my thoughts on why they’re occurring.

https://vodkaontoast.com/i-am-not-clairvoyant-reflections-on-the-events-industry-in-2022-and-2023/

What have you seen this year and do you think the new year is going to bring a new beginning for the events industry?

I saw Santa 🎅

He said the jury's still out on whether I'll make the nice list this year but there's still time yet.

These are a few snapshots from my most recent event; a bespoke Santa's Grotto held at an ICONIC venue - Ministry of Sound - for the staff and families of a corporate client.

Guests were able to meet Father Christmas and his *real live* reindeer, and enjoy a special programme of entertainment from Raver Tots, including sets from garage legends Artful Dodger and DJ Luck & MC Neat. There was lunch, gifts, faceprinting, arts and crafts and more. Something for all the family and kids of all ages!

Feeling festive yet? I know I am 🎄 🦌 🎁

Happy clients = Happy us

Is there anything better than getting to the end of an event, feeling exhausted, dazed and probably a little dehydrated because you didn't drink enough water onsite, to open your inbox to a glowing testimonial from a client?

I don't think it can be beaten! Was on cloud nine reading this one 🤩

If you're looking for an event agency to get stuck in on your next event - drop us a line.

A direct quote from us from a meeting with a client last week 🦌

No two events are ever the same, and making your event feel like no other is a speciality over at Vodka on Toast. That's we why we approach every event brief with a blank-page mindset and listen really carefully to what you want to make your event as unique as you are.

So if you want reindeer, we know a guy. If you want Santa and his Elves too, we can do that. Personalised gifts? The best entertainment? No problem. No idea is too silly or too ambitious.

We love to make your vision come alive - Rudolph and all.

Did you know I'll work with other agencies as a freelancer as well as my own clients too?

You can add a highly experienced event manager to your team, and know your event is in safe hands with someone who can hit the ground running.

It’s never too early or too late to bring me into your project: I’ve answered calls at 8pm the day before an event and turned up onsite 12 hours later.

When I started Vodka on Toast, I dreamed of flexibility and work/life balance. I dreamed of working on different briefs, and working with other growing businesses to develop their events programmes to help their teams grow alongside their business. I love small businesses, and I wanted one for myself.

I also wanted to get a dog.

So in 2017 I took my years of international events experience in business and turned it into Vodka on Toast. Sounds tasty, doesn’t it?

So now, with pooch in tow, I get to work with amazing brands to delight, inspire and engage their talent.

No two days are the same. I work from wherever my laptop and phone are and I get to share my passion for events with my clients every day. I understand growing businesses, because I run one. I have that in common with my clients, and that is something truly special to me.

It's time to answer the question I get asked more than any other question about my business.

Why "Vodka on Toast"?

The answer might be a bit more boring than you're imagining.

I'd known since early on in my career that I wanted to have my own company. I liked the idea of working for myself and have a family history of entrepreneurship. Thing is, I didn't know where to start.

So I started with a name.

I though that if I could create a separate identity to myself, that the business would feel more real and would give me a jumping off point. With a name I could get a website, print business cards, start an instagram.

So I drank some wine (I know, wine not vodka!) and started writing down all the silliest things I could think of. I didn't want a brand that took itself too seriously. I wanted to make people laugh.

And so Vodka on Toast was born.

I do have the list of reject names somewhere. Maybe one day I'll post them.

"Have you ever tried it?" is usually the next question. But if you want to know the answer to that, you'll have to ask me in person.

Check out these few snapshots I took from an Offsite in June to Petritoli in Italy. We worked with a brilliant (and evert growing!) client in tech who wanted to offer their teams an unforgettable experience, so we delivered this amazing event to them.

The location was an incredible choice. Very remote, yes - but excellent for an authentic and unplugged Italian experience. These pics show just a few aspects of the event that were really special including a fantastic vintage theatre that made for a brilliant kick-off meeting, alfresco dining in the town square, stunning views at the welcome reception over the Marche hills and for course, the best food!

Are you a growing business looking to create dazzling events for your teams but not sure where to start? Perhaps you’ve got an exciting plan for this year’s employee engagement events already, but too much on your plate to do them justice.

When businesses grow, so does their need for employee events, and bringing in a professional event planner can ensure those events are truly engaging and meaningful, while helping to lighten your workload.

Talk to us and we can make it happen

I recently had a full circle moment

I stood on the balcony of a venue in Leeds during the set up of an event I've been planning for months, only to realise I was overlooking my old flat. It was almost 10 years to the day since I moved out of that flat, and moved to London for better events opportunities.

It felt so strange to be back in my old city, looking at my old place and my old life.

I studied Events Management at University in Leeds. Not really because I thought it was the only way to get ahead in my events career, but because I knew I wanted the university experience and I was fortunate enough to be in a position where I could study for a few years before entering full-time work.

I started work in events during that time at University, planning Christmas parties and charity events. I never looked back. Even during the pandemic, I could never think of anything else I wanted to do more.

So here I am, now 15 years into my career as an event manager - still loving it (for all of its ups and downs) and constantly looking for ways to evolve as an event prof.

I do miss that flat and that old life sometimes, but in the words of Yara Sophia, "echa pa lante" (go forward).

Who is Vodka on Toast?

Hi! I’m Zoe. I’m a freelance event manager, living in London and working globally. I also go by Vodka on Toast, which usually makes people laugh.

With 13 years of international events experience, including team management, I’ve worked on most kinds of events. Impeccable end-to-end event management comes as standard with me.

I’m used to getting up to speed quickly on a brief and am very flexible with my skill set. I’m personable, creative and ready to get stuck in.
