I always enjoy seeing photos of my party kits in action. My superhero themed party kit went out to help celebrate a 4th birthday recently. The birthday boy had a Spiderman cake, so I added the spiderweb tablecloth to this themed kit. I love this set up!😍

Children’s birthday parties are traditionally full of plastic party bags, balloons and the obligatory black sack full of disposable tableware at the end. Or do they have to be?

Here’s a little list of ideas to keep your child’s birthday party as easy, fun, plastic free and low waste as possible. Oh and cheap too!

1) Choose fabric bunting or paper pom poms and fan decorations.

2) Make your own food and buy in bulk to avoid unnecessary packaging

3) Serve food on reusable tableware.

Did you know that most paper plates can't be recycled?♻️

Paper that has been in contact with food, especially anything wet or greasy, often won’t qualify for recycling. This means it will end up as landfill waste.

In addition, the shiny plastic coating that keeps most paper plates waterproof, will stop the material from decomposing. This means the plates are non-biodegradable and cannot be composted.

The other thing is, they can actually take a very long time to decompose when not in the right settings. If sent to landfill, the paper plates could take up to five years to decompose.

There’s currently more paper than plastic in the UK’s landfill sites. Why add to the problem? 💚🌏

On 1 October, in efforts to reduce plastic pollution, more single-use plastic items will be banned in England.

The ban includes:
🚫 Single-use plastic plates, bowls and trays
🚫 Single-use plastic cutlery including knives, forks, spoons, sporks and chopsticks
🚫 Plastic balloon sticks
🚫 Polystyrene cups and containers

This is similar to bans already in place in Scotland, the EU and many other countries and states around the world.

Interestingly the ban in England also includes single-use items made from bioplastics. These are plastics made from an organic source like corn starch and sugar cane rather than oil.

One of the alternatives is to switch to single-use items made from a natural material like wood, paper, cardboard, bamboo and even palm leaves. These will breakdown after use much more quickly than plastics, and don't leave behind any nasty toxins.

However switching to reusables, wherever possible, is the best way to reduce both our waste and our carbon footprint. This is why our party kits offer such a practical alternative to single-use plastic tableware. 🥳
