Had fun at the Val Ray Productions Reunion & Anniversary Celebration of 30 Years of Live Entertainment held in the Michael Nutter Theater in the Convention Center Saturday , June 3rd.

A star-studded event full of life, love and celebration. The headliner the powerful effervescent, Meli’sa Morgan floored everyone with her still powerful vocalese! She delivered her top R&B hits with ease mixed with fun and excitement.

Preceding her was a long list of talented Philly based artists who made the show a great event. My favorite was the seasoned delivery of entertaining delight of Michal Beckham.
Ms. Valray Sturgis received an official honorary citation from Congressman Brendan Boyle for her longevity in the music production industry.

A fun and historic night! Keep your eyes open for the next Val Ray production!

Honored to have been chosen to pay tribute to an Empress by an Empress! Many thanks to Empress Phile’ Chionesu of the National Million Woman’s March. I did my best to pay tribute to the legacy of Empress Nina Simone and her divine feminine energy of brevity and leadership.

A Jazzy Night in Philly in tribute some of the city’s grand Jazz Diva’s Ms. Justine and Denise King. The old Philly Jazz haunt Bob & Barbara’s Lounge, 15th& South is still standing and hosted Ms. Justine’s appearance after illness and personal trials.

Denise King Enterprises offered a free concert at the Ethical Society, 19th& Rittenhouse. She shone like a star with her lovely three octave range. She packed her show with fellow stars Dwayne Eubanks, trumpet, Anthony Wonsey, piano, Warren Cooper, vocals and a cellist with whom she soloed on the classic Summertime and wowed the audience! She’s a true classic!

She shared her stage with many other guest artists but I had to go eat some delicious food provided by Mama Atiya Ola of Spirit Live Foods. Sorry you missed a fine event.

Enjoying live jazz music at the storied Barber’s Hall with Queen Aqueelah Jamal of WURD radio. She brought her flavorable Juke Joint vibe featuring jazz & rnb legends Alfie Pollitt, percussionist Gregory Moore of Absolute Truth, drummer Tony Day of the Aross the Globe Music Group and Kelsey’s of Atlantic City, Charles Beasley on bass, and Rich Tucker on guitar. A Stellar group capable of any musical challenge. Jazz stars were plentiful, Dense King, Val Ray, Tonya Lynette graced the grand opening of matinee Jazz at Barber’s Hall.

Enjoying Jazz Appreciation Month free jazz concerts series throughout the City. I love the vibraphone. Warren Wolf being my favorite living legend, but tonight I got a chance to listen to a local vibraphonist from right here and Philly for the first time Doug Hirlinger in trio format with bass and a horn. Very smooth, rhythmic and comforting.

Congratulations to my Musical Director Jim Holton on his highly acclaimed performance as a band leader today at Temple University’s Rite of Swing Cafe. He masterfully conducted his Sextet featuring Nasir Dickerson, Elliot Bild, on trumpet, Bassist Richard Hill Jr. Wayne Smith, Jr. on drums, with Greg Farnese on vocals.

Many jazz stars were in the house to cheer Jimmy on. It was Mikki Singletons birthday, Oba Leo Gadson, Leon Jordan, Sr., Cindy LeBlanc, Kadreana Mack to name a few.
Great job Jim!!!

My how time flies…. I can’t believe 2023 is here and I lived to see it. Looking back over the years….. I noticed I’ve been doing this jazz thing for a minute, thought I’d share some of my recent performance memories.

I’m grateful for the many opportunities I’ve been given and the great musicians I got to play with. So………with the recent transitions of Philly Jazz greats like Monnette, Kenny Gates, Joey DeFrancessco, et al. I’m counting my blessings.

Pharoah Saunders is one of my Spiritual/Musical Mentors & Guides since I was a teenager!

The album Thembi kept me knowing there was an ecclesiastical journey I had to be on to find the truths of Life and myself!

Pharoah and John Coltrane guided me strongly and gently into a deeper consciousness that showed me to be loving of God, myself, family and all humanity.

I’m so grateful to the Most High for both of these King’s presences on this Earth and the beauty they brought to it, for I may have been lost without it!
Go in Peace & Love Forever!

Salaams, Your Sistar,

Khadijah Renee
