1. A lifesaver: The healthcare business is becoming increasingly reliant on IoT devices, and it has begun to embrace augmented reality and AI. Healthcare organisations require a network that is both real-time and latency-free. By minimising the distance travelled by data, edge computing solutions aid in the efficient operation of technology and lower processing costs.

2. Road safety: Connecting autonomous vehicles to the edge improves safety, efficiency, reduces accidents, and reduces traffic congestion. These vehicles are outfitted with a slew of sensors that generate a large amount of data that must be analysed quickly, which Edge Computing enables for.

3: Intelligent farming: Sensors in agriculture employ Edge Computing to detect fertiliser density and water usage, as well as optimise harvesting. The sensor collects data on ambient, temperature, and soil variables in order to investigate their influence on crop productivity and guarantee that harvesting takes place during favourable weather conditions.

4. Smart manufacturing: Edge computing is used to track manufacturing processes and apply real-time data to improve product quality and find manufacturing flaws. Edge computing also gives data about in-stock components as well as their estimated lifespan. It enables the company to make more precise and fast operational and manufacturing decisions."

The origins of edge computing can be traced back to Akamai's content delivery network (CDN) in the 1990s . The concept back then was to put nodes in places that were closer to the end user geographically for the transmission of cached resources like photographs and videos.

Brian Noble, a computer scientist, demonstrated in 1997 how mobile technology may be used for speech recognition using edge computing.

Fast forward to the twenty-first century, internet was now available in every home. When smartphones and tablets first hit the market, the internet made users shift to the virtual realm, with GBs of storage and a variety of apps to choose from and manage. During this time, the cloud emerged as a beautiful option – users may access programmes locally from a computer, phone, or tablet, with all processing and storage taking place offsite on the cloud.

This takes us to where we are now: the edge computing period, in which the amount of long-distance communication between a client and a server is reduced to the bare minimum, allowing communication to be as quick as ever."
