Thursday life hack time. Some great tips here on upping productivity. I personally have found getting outside, moving my body and daydreaming is great for me. I'll jump out of work for fifteen minutes, throw on some tunes and float off to my favorite daydream spot - the warehouse inside my mind!

When you’re struggling to be productive, taking a break can increase your effectiveness. Here’s how to take a break so you will be productive again.

It's time to be quiet, to listen to that inner voice, take action steps and RISE!!! Let us all speak our truth and dance to the beat of our own drums!

Big moment in pop / dance history! My hero, the Blessed Madonna enlisted the help of KILLER producers to remix Dua Lipa's new album, and then made a killer mixtape from them! Pretty sure this has never been done before. Seems like all of the remixes for Robyn's "Honey" (of which the Blessed Madonna was a part) set the tone for this project. I hope this becomes a trend in the future of dance. REMIX!

The "mixtape"-style LP also features samples from Stevie Nicks, Jamiroquai, Neneh Cherry and more.

The GVDR is a community of loving souls bringing healing and joy into the world through dance music.

Over this week I’m going to share the five artists who’ve inspired the vibe, music and values of the GVDR.

Day 3: Annie Mac

Early in quarantine I got turned onto Annie Mac’s Friday night radio show. It quickly became the soundtrack for my morning exercise rave dance routines and a source for tracks I’ve played on the GVDR.

What I’ve taken most from Annie is her use of positive language and uplifting music to keep the vibe super high. That formula makes me feel GOOD every time, and that’s exactly what I want to give to the GVDR community.

See everyone this Sunday at 2pm PST for the next GVDR!

Over this week I’m going to share the five artists who’ve inspired the vibe, music and values of the GVDR.

Day 2: Eris Drew and Octo Octa

These two beautiful, loving rave babies are THE energy and vibe of the GVDR. Their belief in the healing power of dance music resonates deeply with me, and it is the leading value of the GVDR.

Several months ago I wrote fan mail to both Eris and Octo Octa (Maya). I’m big on writing fan mail. :) Here’s the message I sent to Eris, first.

Hey there, Eris. My name is Rob; it's a pleasure to meet you.

I want to thank you for the music you write and play. You've been a true inspiration. In the past year I've been laser focused on receiving energy work and putting in the hard work on making my life more purposeful and whole. Your deeply emotive and healing music came at the perfect time. Thank you, Eris. Please extend this to Maya, too.

In response and thanks, I'd like to invite you both to my Good Vibrations Easter Day Rave tomorrow (2pm CST on my FB Live). We'll be coming together as one big dancing family to bring healing and joy to the world. Octo and Eris joints are on deck! I've added the flyer and a link to last week's party. I get into it! 🙂

Take care, Eris. Thanks again for the love and vibes. You're incredibly appreciated.

Cheers,

Rob

See everyone this Sunday at 2pm PST for the next GVDR!

The GVDR is a community of loving souls bringing healing and joy into the world through dance music.

Over this week I’m going to share the five artists who’ve inspired the vibe, music and values of the GVDR.

Day 1: The Blessed Madonna / Marea Stamper (formerly known as The Black Madonna)

This woman is a total boss - an amazing DJ and socially conscious force in our scene.

PLUR (peace, love, unity and respect) has been the raver creed since the Storm Raves of the early 90s, and it’s people like Marea who have continued to raise their voice to keep our community loving and inclusive.

Musically speaking, Marea and I both grew up on Midwest raves, looking to Chicago as our North Star and worshiping Terry Mullan’s “New School Fusion Volume 1” mixtape. I listen to her “We Still Believe” shows in the regular and she has been a source for finding new music to play on the GVDR.

Long story short, she worships Terry Mullan and is the ultimate defender of PLUR. To call her an inspiration would be an understatement. :)

See everyone this Sunday at 2pm PST for the next GVDR!

Built in 1864, the Lemp Brewery was once St. Louis’ largest brewery, before hitting the skids during prohibition. Since then, the complex has been used for a myriad of other businesses, and for a moment in the late 90s...WE HAD RAVES THERE!

The party to mention is Kindred Groove’s “More Good Stuff” - 2500 were in attendance, another 2000 turned away at the door, and the cops were paid off when fire code concerns and noise complaints were made.

Of all the raves I went to in STL in the late 90s, this one feels like the most quintessential - dank warehouse, walls of speakers, lasers everywhere, hidden passageways, multiple floors and thousands of ravers feeling the vibe!

Tape 10: Terry Mullan - Hard to the Core Vol. 3
Parent Post:
https://www.facebook.com/goodvibrationsdayrave/posts/155443732811422

The energy of this tape is the inspiration for how I show up each week on the GVDR. For those of you who have tuned in, seeing me bouncing up and down like a raver on a pogo stick, you know exactly what I’m talking about!

This mix is 60 minutes of raw fury, with rave pianos, pitched vocals, ruffneck breaks and even a cheeseball Tetris sample! Terry starts in with the familiar hip hop sample, “This should be played at high volume, preferably in a residential area!” and with 60 seconds he drops his signature “AWWW YEAH!” scratches and the vibe shoots to 11 - from there he never takes his foot off the gas - IT’S PURELY RELENTLESS, AND GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS TALKING ABOUT IT!!!

One of my copies of this tape (yes, there are more than one!) made it into my mom's Toyota 4Runner about 10 years ago. It's the only tape in her car, and when I go home to visit, I play it at max volume, even with one of the speakers blown.

There are so many killer moments across this tape – the entire tape is one big killer moment! If I had to pick one mix it’s the “Rough in the Jungle Bizness” -> Acen’s “Trip to the moon Pt. 3.” And if I had to pick one moment it would be the MLK samples scratched over that hardkore tune with the most euphoric piano line everrrrr! (Track ID anyone? – 13:40)

I’m so stoked for tomorrow. I’ve been blasting this tape all day. It’s time for this bird to take flight, my fellow GVDR people. I’ll see you tomorrow at 2pm, ready to pop off with the same energy my hero Terry Mullan dropped right here on this tape.

I will be playing tracks sourced exclusively from “The 10 Tapes that Made the GVDR.” Over one hour, we’ll jam out to the tracks of the past, as we come together to bring healing and joy into our future.

Tape 9: DJ Dan - W**d Wacker

Parent Post: https://www.facebook.com/goodvibrationsdayrave/posts/155443732811422

I originally scored this mixtape through a fellow online tape trader. I’d send him two blank Maxell Type II cassettes, and he’d send one back with music on it. This method known as 2:1 trading - something I had learned previously from trading bootleg rock concerts and Hong Kong action movies - was one of the ways I grew my mixtape collection.

The “W**d Wacker” tape, along with the Hardkiss album “Delusions of Grandeur” turned me on to early 90s progressive house. I loved the energy and the vibe, floating between the trippiness of trance music and the groove of house.

Listening to this mix always takes me back to my sophomore year of college, dancing in the photo lab, processing film I’d shot at raves. It was here I first heard tracks like Hope’s “Tree Frog” and Sasha’s stellar remix of Hysterix’s “Talk to Me.”

Close your eyes, my fellow ravers. It’s time to throw your hands in the air and go to the warehouse inside your mind!

For the next GVDR on August 9th, I will be playing tracks sourced exclusively from “The 10 Tapes that Made the GVDR.” Over one hour, we’ll jam out to the tracks of the past, as we come together to bring healing and joy into our future.

Tape 8: Glenn Underground - Pancake Jazz Vol. 1

Parent Post: https://www.facebook.com/goodvibrationsdayrave/posts/155443732811422

This is the tape that turned me on to deep house and made me a deep house DJ. On Saturday mornings, you’ll find me blasting this, while making pancakes and dancing across the kitchen in my socks. I also like to pretend I’m Kenny Bobien, singing to my cats. 😊

For me, deep house feels like the warmth and comfort of a bubble bath, with the freedom and joy of dancing in the rain. It's pure bliss. It was here I heard tracks like Masters at Work with Kenny Bobien “Rise Above the Storm” and Terry Callier’s “Love Theme from Spartacus” - some of my favorite anthems that always take me back to that moment I fell in love with deep house.

On my 21st b-day I went to Chicago for the first time to hear house music, and on one of the nights, I saw Dajae and Carla Prather singing with Mr. Ali, and Glenn Underground DJ’ed between their sets. Mr. Ali came hard with the Chicago classics and Glenn kept the vibe alive with deep, deep, deep soulful, jazzy house music that nourished my soul. Talk about a memory; there’s nothing like feeling house music in Chicago.

Put your socks on, whip up them pancakes, and get ready to hit that hardwood.

For the next GVDR on August 9th, I will be playing tracks sourced exclusively from “The 10 Tapes that Made the GVDR.” Over one hour, we’ll jam out to the tracks of the past, as we come together to bring healing and joy into our future.

Tape 7: Derrick Carter - Illusions (Parts 1 and 2)

It was here I learned the power of "the mix." Because I knew Daft Punk's "Around the World," I could definitively hear when it was being mixed in, riding over that sweet Mousse T remix. The two tracks together raised "Around the World" to a new level, and in this exact moment, I witnessed the power of “the mix.” I understood how DJs combined individual tracks to create and elevate vibe, beyond that which any one track could provide.

This tape reminds me of my college job as a parking attendant at the Repertory Theater at Webster University. Each day I would arrive two hours arrive early to block off spots for season ticket holders. That left me with a solid hour of waiting around with nothing to do. I would rave dance by myself with my Walkman on blast. This tape was in heavy rotation, and ultimately led to my friend Morgan and I driving six hours to Madison, Wisconsin. To see Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and a slew of other amazing talent (Christoper Lawrence, Frankie Bones, Qbert, Bad Company, Woody McBride, Henrik B). A top five rave experience for sure. :)

The track selection here is on point. The Basement Boys "Stop” is a track I play to this day. The harmonica brings me such joy, reminding me of childhood innocence and the vibe of Sesame Street. It wasn't until yesterday when looking up the track listing I realized that hot saxophone track on Side A of tape 1 is Kenny G. Yes, that Kenny G. I never would have known. It’s FIRE. And on the second tape he murders Mike Dunn's "Dance M***a," a track that I have never been able to make sound as good as the way it does here.

For the next GVDR on August 9th, I will be playing tracks sourced exclusively from “The 10 Tapes that Made the GVDR.” Over one hour, we’ll jam out to the tracks of the past, as we come together to bring healing and joy into our future.

Tape 6: J**o - The Tape (Come Into My House)

Parent Post: https://www.facebook.com/goodvibrationsdayrave/posts/155443732811422
There's perhaps not a more beloved DJ from St Louis than J**o. I moved to St. Louis and got into the rave scene after he had passed away, and his legacy had reached mythic proportions.

This tape came from my friends Brad and Midori, who were responsible for feeding me nearly every other tape on this list, and over 90% of the flyers that became the St. Louis Rave Archive. I have an incredibly vivid memory of the ecstatic joy I felt opening their tape case for the first time, seeing a stash of unheard Terry Mullan mixes and a copied tape with “J**o” written on it in Sharpie marker.

Having no information beyond J**o’s name and phone number written on the case, I chose to name this mix, “The Tape,” because that's exactly what it was - THE TAPE! It was here I heard several house classics, including Hard Drive’s “Deep Inside, Designer Music’s (Carl Craig) “Good Girls”, and most importantly, Dajae’s “You Got Me Up” (Cajmere’s Underground Goodies Mix) - likely the track I’ve played most in my DJ career. Many thanks years later to Chris sessions for identifying this tape for its proper name, “Come Into My House” and providing several other J**o mixes, now included on the STL Rave Archive.

I didn't start going to parties in St. Louis until several years after this mix was recorded. It seems that between this tape, Merlin's Phase III and Terry’s NSF1, I can see and feel the vibe of St. Louis parties, circa 1994. Together these three heroes of mine (J**o, Terry Mullan and Merlin) were the St Louis Vibe Tribe, and these three tapes in particular, are the Holy Trinity for inspiring the GVDR. I said I would share the ten tapes that make the GVDR; the truth is that I only needed three, and these are it.

RIP J**o. Your music lives in rave eternity, and your vibe and spirit will continue to inspire us forever.

For the next GVDR on August 9th, I will be playing tracks sourced exclusively from “The 10 Tapes that Made the GVDR.” Over one hour, we’ll jam out to the tracks of the past, as we come together to bring healing and joy into our future.

The 10 Tapes that Made the GVDR
Tape 5: Merlin - Phase III

Parent Post: https://www.facebook.com/goodvibrationsdayrave/posts/155443732811422

1994 was a massive year in St. Louis, both for raves and the tapes that came from them. Today’s tape comes from St. Louis scene leader, Merlin. In the early 90s, Merlin and Terry Mullan threw parties together, and were playing similar styles of music (mainly high BPM rave jams and UK hardkore). Around 1994 they set off in different musical directions - Terry to house and Merlin to breaks. The result was Terry creating my favorite house mix (New School Fusion Volume 1) and Merlin with my favorite breaks mix - this tape right here.

Merlin digitized Phase III sometime around 2000 and handed it off to a friend, Julian Ott. Fortunately I was able to get a copy, and I’ve kept it close for the last 20 years. This mix is PERFECT. It nails the hands in the air vibe of early raves, with its saccharin rave pianos, b-boy samples and killer breakbeats.

Early in my DJ’ing, I remember studying the mixes here, specifically how to seamlessly mix out of one record into the next. I had just secured my first gig at Bo***es in Carbondale, with longtime friend Matt French. I was scared out of my mind that I wasn’t prepared for my first gig. I’ve had many gigs since, and I’m still studying this tape, learning from it. This is a special one.

Tape 4: Terry Mullan - New School Fusion Volume 2

Parent Post: https://www.facebook.com/goodvibrationsdayrave/posts/155443732811422

Remember when I told you that Terry Mullan’s New School Fusion Volume 1 might be my favorite tape? Well, this is the other tape that stands in its way. Together, they are an unstoppable force of rave bliss, and easily the biggest influences on me buying turntables, and later starting the GVDR.

To the best of my knowledge, Terry assembled NSF2 with turntables, a mixer and a four track. The result is 90 mins of slammin house and acid house, mixed to complete perfection. The broad selection of tracks date from 1988 - 1995, including rare Chicago classics (Armando - Confusion's Revenge and Mike Ink’s killer remix of “Move Your Body”) alongside tracks from producers across the globe. It’s also the tape which introduced the midwest rave scene to Daft Punk and led to their first US booking at Drop Bass Network’s three-day techno pagan ritual, “Furthur.”

While I may weeble wobble on which tape is my favorite, there is no doubt that my ultimate mixtape moment comes on the b-side, where Terry does a short scratch interlude, followed by Edge of Motion’s “Setup 707.” Twenty years later and I still get hype AF when the 909 kick drops over that gnarly acid line.

If this a first listen for you, I recommend you clear out about 80 minutes of your day, move the furniture out of your living room, slip your dancing shoes, and crank the stereo to 11 - CAUSE RIGHT ABOUT NOW, WE GONNA GET INTO THE OLD SCHOOL ACID!!!! AWWW YEAH!!!”

For the next GVDR on August 9th, I will be playing tracks sourced exclusively from “The 10 Tapes that Made the GVDR.” Over one hour, we’ll jam out to the tracks of the past, as we come together to bring healing and joy into our future.

Tape 3: Terry Mullan - New School Fusion Volume 1

Parent Post: https://www.facebook.com/goodvibrationsdayrave/posts/155443732811422

New School Fusion Volume 1 (NSF1) could very well be my favorite mixtape; it really depends on the day you ask me. And it's certainly not the last Terry Mullan mixtape that will make this list. NSF1’s influence on my DJ’ing and the GVDR cannot be understated.

Released in 1994, when Terry was still in St. Louis, NSF1 weaves through genres, from classics to contemporary. Every single track on this entire tape is FIRE - “House Nation,” The Magi’s “C’mon Clap Your Hands,” Mike Dunn’s “Magic Feet” and 20+ other classic house, acid, and electro jams. It was here I learned how to not play by the rules. Rather than stick to one genre, stick to one vibe, and simply play what’s hot.

Tape 2: Paul Johnson - I Need Another Plan

Parent Post: https://www.facebook.com/goodvibrationsdayrave/posts/155443732811422

I got this tape my sophomore year of college, when I was becoming less enamored with trance music and beginning to fall in love with house. The uplifting and soulful vibes of house sucked me in, reminding me of the Motown Records I heard from my mom, backed with a message of love and inclusion.

While not all of the records here are exclusively from Chicago, it's the way in which they're played that is so undeniably Chicago - silky smooth and nurturing to the soul, while tracky and jackin, to keep your body moving.

It was here I first heard Cheek and Venus's “Sunshine People,” Cajmere’s “Only for You,” and the “Percolator (Keep Movin Remix).” The happiness, warmth and joy that I felt from this tape was a major inspiration for me learning to DJ. I wanted to give others that same feeling Paul Johnson had given to me.

Put your dancing shoes in, set aside 60 minutes of your day, and get ready to sweat.

The 10 Tapes that Made the GVDR

Tape 1: DRC - In Between Worlds

Parent Post: https://www.facebook.com/goodvibrationsdayrave/posts/155443732811422

This is where it all started - the first tape I ever bought. The year was 1999. I fell into the culture within minutes of stepping into my first party (thrown by the Superstars of Love). I had found my place. These were my people, and I needed this music in my life.

Following the rave, I headed to the dance music record store, Deep Grooves, where I found a large tape case, filled with names foreign to me. The only one sticking out was DRC (Darcey Drc Kearney), a DJ I had seen recently at a local club, the Cheetah. As luck would have it, I went home with a tape that blew my 18-year old mind, and still does the same to this day.

The title of the tape, “In Between Worlds” nails the vibe. Rather than settle for one genre, it lives between techno, tech house, progressive house and acid. The tape’s opening is still one of my favorites; I’m a sucker for a good intro. The pairing of electronic music with samples referencing Star Trek resonates with my own vision of how dance music reflects upon the past, while being the sound of the future.

Upon repeat listens, you can hear how much work went into this tape - the teasing in of songs (“We Are Structure”), movie samples added in via VHS tape (Naked Lunch, Wizard of Oz, and W***y Wonka), and masterful programming, with many of the tracks perfectly falling into each other.

Other highlight moments are the Chemical Brothers remix on the A side, the the Wonka samples over Emanuelle Top’s “Radio” on the B-side, and the closing sample from War Games, “We're closing up the mountain. After the gates are closed, nobody gets in or out.” I was in. I was so in. And I’ve yet to leave.

To those of you who remember this mix, welcome back. To those of you listening for the first time, buckle up. This is a trip. 🙏🙏😀😀🙏🙏

For the next GVDR on August 9th, I will be playing tracks sourced exclusively from “The 10 Tapes that Made the GVDR.” Over one hour, we’ll jam out to the tracks of the past, as we come together to bring healing and joy into our future. Event link:

Over the next 10 days I’m going to share my 10 favorite mixtapes which are the heart and soul of the GVDR.

In the 90s the best music came on mixtapes. While mix CDs may have been easier to acquire, it was the tapes that ruled the scene. Without copyright restrictions, DJs were able to fully express themselves, cramming as many songs onto 60 and 90 minute tapes as would fit. The results were pure, unbridled fire.

The mixtapes that came from raves were as underground as the scene itself. I could only buy them at the dance music record stores (Deep Grooves / Revolve in St. Louis), online or mail order sales (Pure Acid Mixtapes was my go-to), and most commonly from vendors who travelled to raves across the region each weekend (Massive, Untranslatable Concept and Sole Unlimited / Dust Traxx Records being the ones I bought from most). These are the people responsible for pushing the music beyond dance floors, and into our cars and minds. I will always be inspired by their DIY ethos and hustle, and grateful for their commitment to our music.

The tapes I will be posting over the next 10 days are the creme de la creme. They were the primary inspirations for me starting DJ’ing and now 20 years on, they’re fueling the GVDR. I can't wait to share them with you, each with their own special note.

Buckle up, we about to be ravin!

How the Healing Began

A few weeks into quarantine, my healer asked me what I was currently doing to nurture my inner child. When I told her not much, she met me with kindness and compassion, as she always does. Then she offered a suggestion - find an activity that is incredibly fun for him.

In asking myself how I could bring fun to my inner child, the answer was simple – MUSIC. The thought of doing a DJ livestream popped up almost immediately. And just like that, the Good Vibrations Day Rave, a weekly (now monthly) dance party that brings healing and joy into the world, was born!

Below are the elements and core values that have developed from that initial spark and become the vision of the Good Vibrations Day Rave.
