We are now further towards being able to replace the ageing and rusty roof at the Hall with a 25k grant from the Foundation of Rural and Regional Renewal. Yay! With the 25k from the Gippsland Community Foundation we are getting closer to the cost. Fingers crossed for the application to the East Gippsland Shire Council's community grant.

We're almost finished the upgrade of the Hall and the site visit yesterday revealed just a few things to finish off.

So now the committee is looking at getting new energies and ideas to take this beautiful hall to the next phase of its life - whatever that it. Does this sound like you? Please consider joining the committee and bringing your skills, experiences and ideas to the Hall committee.

05/08/2024

Our staff travel in mobile service centres (MSCs) to rural and regional areas to help people with our services and payments.

The Swifts Creek Hall has been undergoing substantial renovations over the past year or so, courtesy of a grant from the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Fund.

This includes the complete upgrading of the kitchen with commercial standard oven, fridge and freezer; renovation of the old supper room as a mid-sized meeting space, and the establishment of a multi-function space at the rear of the hall, complete with toilets and showers.

Now that the Hall is nearing completion, the committee would very much welcome additional committee members to shape the next phase of growth.

We would also welcome volunteers who may not want to be on a committee, but would happily set up working groups to look at project such as:

• Creating the hall as a welcoming community space
• Promoting the Hall as an event space (weddings, dances, auctions)
• Creating and marketing event packages
• Organising events
• Increasing the Hall’s internet presence
• New initiatives
• Anything else

Please comment here if you are interested - or contact Pauline Fox if you know her (contact details not included for privacy reasons).

UPDATE: **Wow! You guys didn't muck around 😳 All three lunches have SOLD OUT. Incredible! Thanks for supporting these unique EGWF lunch events**

We know a lot of people have been waiting for this...
Bookings for the off-grid lunch series at Moscow Villa by local chef Stu Derham from TheLocal Metung are now live!

Thanks to our friends at DEECA Gippsland for giving the green light to put on this unique High Country dining experience as part of the 2024 East Gippsland Winter Festival.

Moscow Villa is a High Country hut built by Bill Ah Chow in the 1940s as his residence whilst manning the fire tower at nearby Mt Nugong. It is a simple one room structure with an impressive fireplace which has kept countless people warm and fed ever since.

Legend has it that MOSCOW VILLA is an acronym for My Own Summer Cottage Officially Welcomes Visitors Inside, Light Luncheon Available.

Hence a light luncheon will be served, accompanied by some quality conversation around the history of the area, its rich cultural history & tales handed down to current locals about some colourful characters.

The Nunniong high plains is a special place: an abundance of wildlife, very tall trees & regular snowfalls in winter. Please come prepared, find someone who likes driving high country roads, has a 4wd with alpine diesel & plenty of warm clothes. It snows at Moscow Villa!

This certainly is an adventurous epicurean experience and we're thrilled to have it as part of the program! As Stu Derham would say, "Giddy Up!"

Dates: Mon 24, Tues 25 & Wed 26 June

Arrive at 11:00am
Lunch served at 12:00pm
Depart at 3:00pm

Cost: $60pp + booking fee

Limited to just 16 people per lunch.
Don't delay - these tickets won't last long!

Getting there… the new building at the back of the hall is nearly finished. Just the shower and a couple of loos to finish off. Dead groovy. The kitchen has quite a bit of work to do, though the new white goods are here, but the serving hatch between the kitchen & old supper room is dead sexy. And the old supper room is more or less done (ish). Lots of cleaning will be required!

Are you affected by the NBN outages? We are checking it out with NBN directly. But you may care to call 1809687626 if you want to add your voice - why there was no pre-warning is an issue.
Meanwhile there is internet access at the Swifts Creek Hall, Ensay Hall, Benambra Neighbourhood House, Tambo Crossing Facility, CFA shed Anglers Rest, CFA in Cobungra and the Omeo Community Hub through the STAND system.
EDIT- ORCRA has just spoken with NBN Co. and their message is that they provided warning and information about the planned outages to all of the service providers (eg Telstra, Mate etc) who are supposed to provide that information to users (us). So ring your service provider and hassle them for not providing the info as it’s not the first time!
The good news is that the outages listed on the NBN website are the worst case scenario and it may well be on before that and once the work to close the NBN loop is complete which we are told will be 'soon', this won’t happen as often as currently every time they have to work on a tower from Orbost to here we lose NBN.

The extension is looking better and better all the time! But the progress inside is amazing. We even have floors now. But I kept out of the way of the builders so no photos.

I noticed the spike on the hall roof. Quite lovely! I don’t know if it serves a function or is just decorative. Any ideas?
