Did you know?
Cotton stainers are pest of potential economic importance.

Two species of this bug are listed as "quarantine pests" under the Plant Protection Act of 2009. The two species are Dysdercus koenigii and Dysdercus sidae.

A Quarantine Pest means a pest of potential economic importance to an area it is in, not yet present there, or present but not widely distributed and being officially controlled.

If a pest listed as a Quarantine Pest is present at any premises the Minister can order that those premises be under quarantine, while the pest is investigated and cleared out.

In Zimbabwe and some northern provinces of South Africa, people harvest and eat the little insect commonly called Podile or Green Stink Bug, scientific name Encosternum delegorguei.

This bug, like other edible insects, could help improve nutritional security and earn income for rural communities.

One of the plants that the bug feeds on is the one we commonly call the Hedge...or hop bush, scietific name Dodonaea viscosa. It likes to lay its eggs on the twigs of the Motswere tree, or leadwood, scientific name Combretum imberbe.

The Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism Hon. Philda Nani Kereng outlined the position of the Ministry with regard to the Sengaparile plant in parliament recently.

She explained that her Ministry is gathering knowledge on how we currently harvest Sengaparile, packaging, marketing, how we sell it and how we can improve through partnerships with Botswana University of Agriculture & Natural Resources, Thusano Lefatsheng and the University of Botswana and Department of National Agricultural Research and Development Institute (NARDI).

In addition, the ministry is also drafting two Bills; Access and Benefit Sharing Bill and the Forestry and Range Resources Bill towards the development of a strategic framework for creation of a local Value Chain for Sengaparile.

This is a fungus. It is not a plant 😄

Jaanong ka Setswana gone a re ntse rare ke semela? Re di harologanya jang?

Mushrooms are fungi. They belong in a kingdom of their own, separate from plants and animals. Fungi differ from plants and animals in the way they obtain their nutrients.

Generally, plants make their food using the sun's energy (photosynthesis), while animals eat, then internally digest, their food. Fungi do neither: their mycelium grows into or around the food source, secretes enzymes that digest the food externally, and the mycelium then absorbs the digested nutrients. https://www.for.gov.bc.ca/

Maybe you have seen this plant in gardens, roadsides, disturbed places, wastelands and pastures. In South Africa it was at one time reported as one of the top invasive species in the Kruger National Park.

You can read an informative little piece about alien invasive species in Botswana published by the Sunday Standard. Here is the link 🌱🌿🌱🌱
