We are incredibly excited to announce the first part of the line up for our celebration of 30 years of Jeff Buckley’s album ‘Grace’

On August 23rd 1994, Jeff Buckley released Grace and a show in Whelans, Dublin to celebrate the launch.

30 years on, the Turning Pirate house band, led by musical director Joe Furlong, will play Grace live from start to finish with the help of some incredible singers. 

Presented by Hibernacle and Turning Pirate, who are best known for the Turning Pirate Mix Tapes and a Celebration of John Prine and generally bringing together unique mixes of artists for some musical magic. All this in association with the lovely legends at Whelans, this is one show not to be missed.

In 1972 Barry Moore wrote a song called WAVE UP TO THE SHORE. Not his first song, but it had something. He did some gigs, wrote some songs; and in 1987 he boarded a plane for New York, and Luka Bloom was born.

Riverside was released in 1990 on REPRISE Records. It was followed by THE ACOUSTIC MOTORBIKE, AND TURF.

During the early 1990s the life of writing, recording and touring took off. The US, Australia, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, and The UK are frequent destinations for Luka's songs.

As well as his own touring, he has performed at some of the great festivals: Pinkpop (Holland); Roskilde (Denmark), TorhoutWerchter (Belgium), Newport Folk Festival (US), Byron Blues Festival (Australia), Glastonbury and Cambridge, (UK). And most of all, he regularly sings all over the island of Ireland, where he lives in County Clare.

Since 2000, Luka has been releasing his own songs and music via www.lukabloom.com

17 independent albums in total, as well as a book of photographs and some lyrics called HOMEPLACE.

In 2022, Luka was singing Wave up to the Shore at home one afternoon. He suddenly realised it was 50 years old.
And this resulted in a triple cd of 50 songs from the past 50 years. Reworkings of songs written and learned since 1972.

Up up and away, just where he should be.

Josh Okeefe seemed not in my wheelhouse at first, ‘like bringing sand to the Arabs’ as my Dad would say. 🙄

But then I met him and his wife Cora on zoom and immediately saw that they should be in our tribe. His music came from the right place, his song writing was unreal and he was a lad who had over-worked boots, maybe inside and outside, like myself. I am so glad to have him in our stable and on tour in Ireland at the moment. 🎶 ❤️

So I am very happy that my old friend Glen has put his lazer on him. It’s a formidable and powerful thing, Glen’s lazer. 💫

Looking forward to seeing Josh in Whelan's tomorrow. (Love going back to the scene of the crime(s) )

Last night I yelled at a drunk guy for talking loud over our session. I woke up feeling like a big rude American but then today I ran into the guy at the Spar and apologized and he was lovely. Now Joe is braising lamb for our increasingly elaborate ritual night-off band dinner and we are jamming Kris Kristofferson and Andy Irvine in the kitchen while drinking pots upon pots of tea.

Féileacán Bán, (White butterfly) Nursing service, which was developed to provide care and support from the point of diagnosis and throughout the dementia journey, represents hope and transformation for both the dementia patients and their carers.

This bespoke nursing service moves away from the status quo and provides a patient and family-centred service in the community setting. The multi-element pathway structure delivers post-diagnostic dementia support services such as community clinics, crisis/community home visits, LivDem (a psychotherapeutic educational programme), a brain gym home programme, peer engagement opportunities through a memory lounge, alongside family carer advice and support networks with telephone and virtual consultation.

The funds raised will be used to purchase and provide much needed cognitive resources to those who have a diagnosis of dementia and their families as well as other materials to help them to understand and cope with the diagnosis and give them hope and practical support as they embark on their journey together.

We met Tim Easton at an American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP) show in Tribeca in New York back in 2006. Lisa Hannigan and Josh Ritter were both playing and it was Lisa’s first ever show in the US.

A big gang of friends flew over to be there and poor ASCAP didn’t know what hit them when a group of Irish people arrived and found an open bar 😂

We ended up with guitars and hot teas in Washington Square Park and kidnapped Tim along with us.

At some point Tim said ‘I’d love to go back and play in Ireland’ and Lisa said ‘Oh Bird can do that for you’ (despite the fact that I had only booked a handful of Irish acts into a few gigs while in college/working in Whelans).

And so nearly 20 years later and with www.turningpirate.com in full swing, it is a real pleasure to welcome Tim back to Ireland once again. Maybe the 4th? 5th? time he has been back since.

And we all get older and wiser and saggier and greyer, some things just stay the same. And I hope it is always so. ❤️

Please come see Tim and have a tea or a pint with us on Tuesday. You won’t regret it 🇮🇪🎶💫
