I love wandering the lawns and hidden spaces between Hudson Valley mansions and the river. There are all kinds of secret buildings, old stone walls, waterfalls, bridges, ponds, and even collapsing cottages tucked away in there. And the riverfront facades, sometimes crumbling in the loveliest and most “Old World” of ways, never fail to inspire me. I can’t help but imagine myself in a sweeping Georgian gown, trouncing down the lawn to chase some unseen intrigue. As if I’m stepping into a painting.

Some venues are simply locations, and others are in themselves works of art. The curved staircases, the sculpted facades, and the historic grandeur of a place define a mood even before the details are added. Whether your dream setting is a Gilded Age estate like this one, a quiet garden, or something in between, the right venue makes every other decision feel effortless. Location, location, location.

A well-chosen venue goes beyond setting the scene to shape the experience. It offers not only beauty, but a sense of history, romance, and place. What kind of setting speaks to you? Are you, like me, always moving through life as if you were in a novel or film? A whimsical girlie? Or are you more practical?

An invitation suite is often one of the first design elements I select with a couple, and it does so much more than convey information. It sets the tone, builds anticipation (for both the couple and their guests), and gives a tangible sense of what’s to come. That’s why I always love a flat lay. It’s a chance to tell their story in a way that feels as personal as the wedding itself.

The way I select and style an invitation reflects the layers of meaning within the suite. Color and font choices play their part, but they’re just one piece of the larger picture. I always include an element of texture because the power of touch is so compelling in a digital world. There’s usually an art element: a tiny artwork, a tool, or materials that speak to the customized nature of our design process. And there are artifacts that hold significance for the couple, chosen to reflect their journey together.

Receiving a beautifully crafted invitation in the mail, feeling the weight of the paper, and running a finger over details is an experience unto itself.

Even when paired with a digital option, a physical invitation outlasts its initial purpose. It’s pinned to inspiration boards, tucked into keepsake boxes, and held onto long after the wedding day has passed. I still have mine!

What are your thoughts? Is paper still it for you, or is it a thing of the past?

I adore seeing brides intentionally savoring that quiet moment alone before the fanfare begins.

On my own wedding day, there was a thunderstorm, both of our dads had health incidents, and there was, let’s say, a swirl of personalities on-site. Just a lot of hubbub that could’ve spelled stress and doom.

But I’d made a pact with my partner to prioritize our peace and to hold onto one another first and foremost.

I also remember slipping away to change into my reception dress and catching sight of myself in the mirror. For a moment I didn’t recognize that woman in the gown. And for the first time in a week, I was alone with her.

I took a deep breath and finally took it all in. And I realized I was *so* happy. Not like “gong through the motions” happy. The kind of happiness you feel when you’re five years old, soaring on the swings with your best friend. Every fiber of your body radiating pure, unfiltered joy. Knowing you’re stepping into a new era with a partner who is more than you ever could have imagined.

That’s what I’ve always loved about this particular series of images. There’s such quiet beauty in the moments before everything begins: the pause before vows are spoken, the soft inhale before stepping into the day you’ve dreamed of... Emily sits in a halo of blooms and natural light, draped in the grace of anticipation. Delicate florals (and the atmosphere they create) strike an effortless balance of romance, artistry, and presence. I love celebrating this moment of meditation.

If you can, please protect this moment of peace within your timeline. Create this moment for yourself.Step away, breathe it in, and feel the rush of quiet joy.

If you’ve read this far, I want you to know that’s my wedding day wish for you. That you find pockets of time to reconnect with the present moment.

Did you know that- according to a study published in the journal of consumer research (I'm a nerd; bear with me 🤓)- gift recipients overwhelmingly prefer experiences to material gifts?

We all love a beautifully presented guest favor, but it's wise to keep it practical. Don't waste money on physical favors that aren't useful during the wedding itself.

🖤 Choose edible treats like macarons or tubes of boozy cider for instant enjoyment.
🖤 Promote guest comfort with cozy blankets for those chilly ceremonies and bonfires.
🖤 Consider investing in experiences- like a henna artist or tarot reader- that guests will remember.
🖤 If you're having a low-waste wedding, consider making a gift to an eco-conscious cause or giving your guests pollinator seed balls to spread wildflowers (and joy)!

Your people came to celebrate with *you*! The best thanks you can give them is a comfortable, inclusive day filled with moments that truly matter.

December is the time to use mixed textures and deep tones to lend a sense of opulence to indoor spaces.

Deep greens, dapper blues, snowy whites and sophisticated black in rich finishes make the dinner table feel seasonal, classy, and luxurious.

If you’re having an intimate gathering, consider several mini centerpieces (we like bowls or compotes) to fill out your tablescape without soaking up space. Wintery bits like pinecones and brunia berries are a nice nod to the season.

Feeling inspired? Dive into our “Gather Together” Pinterest board for a wealth of ideas to elevate your wintery gathering.
