"The 'million miles problem' is not unique for AD design. It is an issue for ADAS too. Autonomous Emergency Steering and Autonomous Emergency Braking have the potential to cause harm and these faults can not be addressed by functional safety alone. Perception and decision algorithms which are insufficiently robust can lead to hazardous situations. We will present validator concepts which can be used to design more robust ADAS as well as AD-systems. We will then also present how one can iterate the design to minimize the risk of functional insufficiencies and build an argument to motivate that the systems are safe."

Highlights from the opening day of ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo Conference 2023 💫
The conference opened with a welcome address from Tony Robinson, who has been an observer of autonomous vehicles since 1993 and is the founder of ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo, Automotive Testing Expo and their associated magazines. Tony revealed that autonomous vehicles have been a favorite subject of his for 30 years. In 1994 he attended the Prometheus event in Paris, where he witnessed a Mercedes S-Class driving fully autonomously around the Boulevard Périphérique. The first morning’s dedicated conference saw a fascinating presentation from David Hermann, development engineer, Porsche Engineering Services. In a presentation titled ‘Driving in the high dynamics area: a simulation environment for automated driving on racetracks,’ Hermann discussed the race between automotive manufacturers to bring new technologies into vehicles, and how it is being fueled by tighter emission standards, stricter safety requirements and higher levels of driving automation. 💫 Discovering Unknown-Unsafe Scenarios: the SOTIF standard forces suppliers to have methods in place to reduce the number of unknown-unsafe scenarios by applying sufficient exploration and testing. To help OEMs and AV suppliers, Siemens has developed the Critical Scenario Creation proprietary methodology. It systematically and automatically generates a pool of scenarios for a specific operational domain based on a map of the scene and recorded data. It gives an objective indication of the severity of the risk with a severity indicator, which combines a KPI for criticality with a proprietary KPI for novelty. In the last 1.5 years, Torc Robotics and TNO have implemented large scale scenario detection using TNO’s StreetWise pipeline, during which the need was felt to develop a more structural approach for defining scenario categories. Good coverage of real-world driving with scenario categories is an essential part of developing Level 4 autonomous vehicle technology at scale. AD/ADAS systems validation is a complex task and the current trend is to perform and combine various validation activities: field testing, bench testing, simulation, at different levels of system integration: model-based, software-based, hardware-based, vehicle-in-the-loop, and driving simulation.
Stéphane's presentation will be centered on simulation activities for validation, addressing some trends at Renault: shift-left approach regarding the development cycle, where simulation can offer earlier and pre-validation results due to MBSE implementation.
