My senior year of college, I did a semester in Italy taking art history, photography, and painting classes. It was a transformative experience that inspired me as a creative and, years later, influenced my brand.
This design is inspired by the most beautiful space I’ve ever been in - Ca****la dei Principi - part of the San Lorenzo complex in Florence. I loved my tour of the mausoleum so much, I bought a notebook in the gift shop because it reminded me of the space. Years later, it just so happened to be the book I used to write notes about my very first wedding.
But why am I telling you this?
I believe events can be a medium we use to tell a story. Good storytelling completely changes the atmosphere of an event, especially in the way it engages guests. You might not know that the notebook in the back of these photos represents so many important experiences in my life, or that the goblet on top of it came from my great-grandfather’s restaurant on Long Island, or why these elements should be significant - I don’t think these choices are telling a literal story, but my intention with this design was to express who I am, the experiences that have influenced me, and the people and things I love. To show a piece of myself represented through all of the little choices that go into designing an event. It’s exactly what I want to help my clients achieve when designing for them. Even the smallest elements imbue the story with a little more meaning, and that intentional approach to design is visually reflected in the finished product.
I recently had a bride ask something like, ‘How do you always know exactly what I should choose? Even down to the color palette, you’re spot on.’ My answer was, ‘I’ve just been listening to you.’
I do this job because I love learning about people and listening to their stories. I might use flowers and flatware as my medium, but I still want to tell a story and prioritize the ‘why’ over the ’what’ when designing spaces.
I want to work with clients who are looking to lift their guests out of the monotony of the expected and risk a little vulnerability for the reward of delivering a transformative experience. That means telling a good story.

Why I don’t believe in vendor lists -

While it’s rare, I occasionally have clients request to see my full vendor list. When that question comes up, I give those clients my honest answer: I don’t have one.
Since starting my business, I have never compiled a full client-facing document that lists every creative I work with (I only have internal lists for my reference). Since so many event professionals DO put lists together, you might be wondering why I feel differently.
As a planner, I believe one of my biggest responsibilities is to connect my clients with the absolute best fit, and I connect my clients with my creative partners based on a number of factors like level of service, artistic style, personality, location, and budget. My clients hire me to remove the guess work from their planning experience, so it would be negligent for me to hand them a multiple page document and send them on their way.
Of course, my clients get the final say on who they hire, but wouldn’t you rather have a pre-selected, meticulously curated list of the people who are best for the job instead of a glorified phone book?
On top of that, it’s also important to me that I’m connecting my creative partners with the right clients who I know will recognize the value of their work.
Putting so much thought and intention into the team I create for my clients adds to the joy of the planning process. It allows me to connect my clients with creatives who can genuinely celebrate them by forming connections and a deeper understanding of what my clients want and need. Luxury services shouldn’t offer anything less.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times: I do this job because I love people.
In my opinion, the most involved part of event planning is understanding what makes you and your people tick, and delivering spaces and experiences where you feel comfortable and passionate enough to be yourselves.
Holding space for that truth is the real secret to producing phenomenal events that create genuine joy, and shouldn’t that be the goal?

As we gear up for engagement season, I thought now would be the perfect time to reintroduce myself.

I’m John Campbell, owner and principal planner of John Campbell Events and Design. I create events and environments focused on joy, community, and impeccable hospitality. I believe my secret to producing exceptional events is forming true connections with the humans around me, and I spend a lot of time getting to understand my clients on a deep level.

Weddings are my first love, but I also plan and design experience-focused private parties and corporate events. My only “rule” is that each event be completely unique; I relish the challenge that comes with planning unexpected, over-the-top corporate retreats for 10 or 30-person birthday parties with Michelin star-worthy tasting menus just as much as I enjoy orchestrating artful wedding weekends for 250.

In my spare time, you can find me in the kitchen trying out a new recipe, listening to an audiobook (I highly recommend Priya Parker’s “The Art of Gathering”), or spending some quality time with my partner, Sean, my stepdaughter, Kylie, and our rescue dog, Phoebe.

I look forward to getting to know you ☺️

(Swipe through to see renderings taken from my design presentation!)

Immersive design presentations complete with renderings are the hallmark of the JCE&D experience. I believe that getting a glimpse into how your event will look is more than a luxury - it’s a necessity. This communicates to my clients what their finished product should look like, and also communicates to the entire vendor team what we need to produce in order to meet the client’s expectations. Clear communication is foundational to good planning, and renderings are just one of the methods I use to make sure nothing is left to chance.

How do you capture everything Fall has to offer in one design? It’s the season we associate with abundance, but it’s also the season that brings scarcity. When we think of Fall, we think of warm colors, but it’s a season of chilly weather.
Its beauty lies in its dichotomies.
I wanted to capture all of that in this tablescape. White isn’t often a popular choice for Fall, but I’ve always loved the fresh, clean, snowy feeling it brings to a Fall table - so white china, napkins, and flower vessels were chosen. I loved this napkin from because the pattern just feels like a snowy day in a stark, leafless forest, but the sienna color gives it the perfect touch of warmth. The choice of a warm velvet linen brings the needed contrast to that, and creates an earthy foundation meant to pay homage to Appalachian clay.
I wanted florals that were abundant in their texture and movement while also capturing the liminal space of their approaching decay. Of course, incorporating fruit is a great way to give a nod to our association with the season of harvesting.
My hope was that this design would say a lot in its simplicity. That you would connect with everything the season has to offer in an intimate, quiet way.

02/10/2023

One of my biggest priorities when planning an event is guest comfort. One element of that is correctly spacing place settings at a table. If you Google, “How much space should each person be given at a dinner table,” you’ll get a pretty large array of answers. My standard minimum is 24 inches, and, ideally, we’ll give a little bit more than that. Chairs should be spaced a minimum of 8 inches apart, and I like to keep things closer to 10 to 12 inches when I can. In practical application, a 60 inch round table should seat a maximum of 8 guests. The circumference of a circle with a 60 inch diameter is 188.5 inches, leaving 23.6 inches for each guest - just (acceptably) shy of my minimum. If you’re using a standard sized chair here, you can space them about 8 inches apart. This might seem like a tedious thing to write an entire post about, but no one wants to bump elbows with a loved one (let alone a stranger) when they’re trying to eat dinner. Portfolios like an Instagram profile are usually about showing off the style of an event, but substance and proper planning set the stage for designs to function as they’re intended. Events are spaces meant to be lived in, and a planner’s job is to make sure those spaces prioritize beauty AND practicality.

This linen and napkin combo was the perfect choice for a design inspired by the Frog and Toad books. Keeping the pattern homogeneous and playing with neutral colors makes for a subtle but strong design element that compliments the lush tablescape.

05/09/2023

When planning a summer wedding in Florida, it’s so important to think about guest comfort in relation to the heat.
Here are a few tips to keep your guests comfortable as a considerate host:
- Communicate! There’s no such thing as providing your guests with too much info. Let them know there will be outdoor elements to your event so they can plan accordingly for their personal comfort.
- Indoor elements. Outdoor spaces make for beautiful photos, but make sure you’re also incorporating indoor elements into the event. Guests might have tolerance for an outdoor ceremony, but few people are comfortable braving the heat for the length of a reception. Don’t keep guests outside for too long, and make sure they have access to indoor spaces if they need it.
- Hydration. Whether it’s passed beverages, a bar, or a simple water station (I suggest all three together for large guest counts), make sure your guests can easily hydrate. Don’t go too crazy with the alcoholic options either, or you might end up with a lot of sloshed guests before dinner even starts.
- Attire. Don’t ask your guests to dress in a way that will make them uncomfortable. Black tie on a Florida beach in August is considered cruel and unusual punishment here at JCW.
- Shade. Tents, custom structures, large umbrellas, parasols - give your guests ways to escape the sun.
- Creative culinary options. We’ve seen Aperol popsicles in a glass of Prosecco, ice cream, and frozen drinks all offered as a way to keep guests cool.

11/07/2023

When I entered The James Museum lobby for the first time, I was hit with a deep sense of serenity. The space is designed to mimic a canyon that leads you to an oasis - a grand waterfall that features Native American Indians riding a horse. When my grooms ended up choosing this venue, I had a lot of opinions about the space, and, luckily, the grooms agreed. It was important that we highlight the art in the ceremony space rather than obstruct it or work around it. We especially wanted to feature the statue in the waterfall, and you may notice that the florals were designed to organically part ways so that the statue would have its moment in the spotlight.
Choosing a very simple palette with hues like tannin and mushroom, accented with a goldenrod yellow, set the ceremony within the space instead of apart from it while also allowing us to bring in a vibrant color that hinted at the reception to follow.
I talk a lot with clients about working with the aesthetic of a space, but rarely do I have to think about respecting the integrity of a space. I wanted whatever we did here to have an impact while also being as unobtrusive as possible. In the end, this feels more like an extension of the art than it does a separate installation.
