Coming soon on our blog, she’ll retell her first encounter with blatant racism. Her experience starts with casual use of the ‘n-word’ and ends with overt dehumanization of black women.

For a while, was the only black woman at her job. When they hired another black woman, her co-worker commented that he’d no longer be able to make any black jokes...as if ’s presence in the workplace hadn’t been enough.

Many of us have had experiences where people become familiar with us and begin to separate us from our blackness. Or where the way we speak, dress, or wear our hair makes us more palatable.

Many of us have our first encounters with racism at an early age. .talks experience is no different.

As a child, .talks rarely went to her white best friend’s home. And on the rare occasions she did, her best friend would tell her she couldn’t stay too long.
-
In our next blog post, we’ll talk more about .talks’ encounters with her best friend’s grandma and how she learned that the world isn’t always safe and welcoming.

For , senior year as an undergrad studying nutrition was tough. Maybe a little bit tougher because she was often the only Black person in the classroom.
-
One day, she and her classmates were excitedly talking about graduation preparations when one student remarked, “Oh my goodness, this is the blackest I’ve ever seen you!”
-
None of her other classmates addressed the comment. No one explained that our blackness isn’t defined by our level of excitement but is rather a privilege bestowed on us by birth.
-
While later had conversations with her classmate about the incident, this was only one of several microagressions she experienced at school. Later this week, we’ll share more of her story on our blog. Stay tuned.

You can dispute the stats about racism, but you can’t dispute how we feel. The Black Girl Diaries series launches this week. We’re sharing the stories of 6 women and their encounters with sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant racist behavior.
-
Often, the racist behavior comes from friends, teachers, and co-workers who don’t even realize how harmful their words and actions have been. Well the time for them to realize is now. Thank you to all the women who contributed to this series and are amplifying the collective black voice.

We’re looking for 5 women who are willing to share an experience they’ve had with racism, with us. It doesn’t matter if it’s a micro-aggression or blatant display of hate and prejudice. Every racist encounter is a hurtful reminder that the fight for equality is not over. Often, these encounters leave us feeling less than, discounted, and alone. Our new content series, Black Girl Diaries, highlights these stories in hopes that talking about our experiences will help us heal and remind us that while the fight is not over, we never fight alone.
Please DM us if you are interested in sharing. When we highlight your story, you have the option to remain completely anonymous to the public.

What’s that? The sweet sound of freedom? Not quite, but Texas’ Governor Abbott just announced plans to re-open the state. More details will come on Monday but here’s what we know so far:
-
1. Doctors can now perform elective surgeries
-
2. State parks will open on Monday. Masks, 6 ft. of social distance, and groups of 5 or less required.
-
3. Texas schools are officially closed for the rest of the year
-
4. Non-essential retailers can re-open. Delivery or to-go orders only.
