Oh Christmas Tree…our tree was decorated by the entire team. We took inspiration from the Vermeil Room at the White House for the foundation of the tree. The tree features a collection of White House ornaments from the 1980s to mid 2010s we were gifted from a dear friend’s Aunt Lallye circa New Orleans. Luise cried with tears of Joy as she saw her Aunt’s ornaments displayed as she has since passed away and loved Christmas.
We hope this season brings peace, love and make great memories with family and friends. We rejoice in our ties of friendship and awesome opportunities to work with so many wonderful clients, friends and other business partners.

Last week our owner, Sara Larson, had the honor of decorating the White House for Christmas. Here is a brief about her time there….

We spent countless hours volunteering our time and talents decorating numerous trees, crafted until our fingers were glued together, stretched miles of garland and spent quality time with fellow my Americans.

I felt a sense of awe and wonderment everyday walking into the People’s House. The history it held and this was my place of work for a week.

There were 300 (out of a pool of 3500 applicants) of us that volunteered to decorate(yes this is the government people. We paid for our own travel and accommodations) Various walks of life and levels of decorating skills. Some had never used a hot glue gun to other professional designers.

We were put into teams to break up the work. I was fortunate to be placed on Team Clementine. We were tasked with decorating the Diplomatic Reception and Palm rooms. Two areas that are not typically open to the public. The Diplomatic Reception Room serves as the greeting place for all diplomats and foreign dignitaries and the entrance and exit for the President and First Lady in and out of the White House. For Christmas this is where anyone whom is getting a photo taken with the President and First Lady is at. No pressure to design! The Palm room is part of the West Wing collonade and is a light and airy space.

While decorating the trees in the Diplomatic Reception room a member of secret service let us know that the fireplace where I was decorating the mantle was where FDR hosted fireside chats and the painting of George Washington above me circa 1780s was what the dollar bill portrait was based on. Taking breaks in the Rose Garden to grab some fresh air from decorating the Palm Room and looking onward into the Oval Office. Just unbelievable.

My leaders were fabulous. Charlotte Smith a DIY and crafting master whom is often featured on HGTVs Dream House. Beth Kinsington a crafting Guru and serves as the resident craft expert and host on HSN (home shopping network) and has her own paper line. They were wonderful shepherds through this week. They put together a vision board for the room and prepared us for the volume of work that lay ahead. I honestly was not prepared for the amount of items that were hand made and crafted for all the rooms. Our team modged podged 1200 clementines that I made into garlands. Over 12,000 pieces of paper glued together to make paper daisies. Thousands of pieces of paper cut into leaves and individually glued together wires that we assembled into garlands. It was a volume game!
They took inventory and skill level of our team. I was the only professional decorator and florist on the team. I was put in charge of tree and mantle designs in the Diplomat room and assembling the paper olive garlands in the Palm room. Also, I was the official bow maker for our team. Bows are a thing in the White House and they have a specific bow that is acceptable.
The friendships made, growing my skill set and helping give this gift of beautiful decor to the People’s House for about 10,000 visitors a week was truly amazing.

Another successful floral design class. Our students made pumpkin arrangements. Each was as unique as them. We loved watching them learn new skills and get creative with design. The joy that floral brings makes our hearts happy! Thank you Highwind Brewing Company for being our host for this class! Your hospitality was outstanding.
