"The virus is now spreading at an alarming rate," said a Wuhan doctor, speaking to the BBC. They described thousands of panicking patients flooding the hospitals.

The coronavirus spread from Huanan Seafood Market. Live poultry and 'exotic' meat, including ostrich, alligator tongue and dog meat, were available. Often, such markets have no hygiene regulations. The market has since been shut down, but was situated in central Wuhan—the 42nd largest city in the world, with a population of roughly 11 million people.

At least 26 people have died and 887 more have been infected. However, the statistics may not be reliable. Back in 2003, the deadly SARS virus was covered up by Chinese authorities. This time around, government agencies and state-run media are once again providing the information.

In London, The MRC Centre for Global Infections Disease Analysis places the number at 1723 cases as of January 12th, 2020.

When a government is more concerned with 'saving face' and 'keeping control' than their own people, they are unable to effectively deal with such outbreaks.

Initially, this virus was also covered up. For example, the media promoted a huge community meal in Wuhan when 59 cases of the virus had already been reported.

Now, with international cases being reported, events in China are being cancelled and transport has been restricted. It's no longer a domestic issue.

What does this mean for Taiwan?

Human-to-human transmission has been confirmed, and we're facing Chinese New Year—the world's largest human migration. Over 1 million Taiwanese live or work in China and many will travel home for the holiday.

On Wednesday, President Tsai Ing-wen urged China to share information about the outbreak. Taiwan's airports are enforcing 'very strict' epidemic prevention measures.

Unfortunately, due to Beijing's objections, Taiwan is not a member of the WHO (World Health Assembly). After President Tsai's election in 2016, Beijing further protested, and now Taiwan isn't even allowed to attend as an observer. Beijing also broke all government-level diaolgue with Taipei.

Rather than bowing to Beijing, the WHO should accept Taiwan. Taiwan is also facing the coronavirus and should be allowed to participate in dialogues. Now is no time for exclusion.

Before the protests, Hong Kongers would say "today Xinjiang, tomorrow Hong Kong."

Now, we often hear "today Hong Kong, tomorrow Taiwan."'

We've seen mysterious trains with covered windows leaving Hong Kong, countless accounts of torture and sexual abuse, suspicious 'su***de' cases, and concentration camps in Xinjiang.

So, when we see footage of people being arrested in Hong Kong, we must ask ourselves a frightening question: what is going to happen to them?

The footage attached to this post is taken from the Instagram account ray.rayhk. If the police are this violent when surrounded by journalists, just imagine what they are capable of when they have a protestor trapped inside a cell.

Please continue to raise awareness, boycott complicit companies, and protect democracy at all costs.

Christmas Eve showed us all how the Hong Kong government twists facts and frames protesters as 'the bad guys.' At midnight, after an evening of violence, their verdict was that the police had responded properly and that the protesters were criminals. But what really happened?

Around 7pm, conflict began brewing between the police and journalists. Around 8pm, the police randomly arrested a man who was trying to walk around the scene to reach his destination. Then, disagreeing with the unreasonable arrest, people began to gather. After numerous cases of sexual abuse and torture, it is no surprise that Hong Kongers take 'arrests' extremely seriously.

The police called this response an illegal gathering, meaning that everyone on the scene was now breaking the law. They then started suppressing the crowd and using tear gas. Around 9pm, they started shooting. One man was shot in the face, and a picture of his blood-soaked face mask was taken and has since spread throughout social media. Bringing Christmas Eve to an end, the police started using water cannons around 10pm.

The initial spark was an unreasonable arrest—of course, people will gather when an innocent passer-by is suddenly arrested. Declaring this natural response to be an illegal gathering and instantly resorting to pepper spray caused the situation to escalate. Does this remotely match the picture the government painted of police properly dealing with criminals? Once again, the Hong Kong government has twisted the narrative to protect itself and demonize the people.

Stay strong, Hong Kong. We see through the government’s lies.

A free and democratic society should not be taken for granted.

In the 1980s, a democracy movement gradually emerged in Taiwan. At first, those involved were monitored by the police, and non-Party magazines could be banned at any time. However, the street movement flourished and eventually the government was forced to stop prohibiting the organisation of political parties.

Taiwanese people took to the streets and chanted for democracy, freedom and their rights.

When these events were taking place, the media also stood on the front line, recorded this historical moment and presented it to the entire world—they had to be constantly alert. Although these events unfolded in what may now feel like an unfamiliar time and place, these people were nevertheless heroes who were prepared to risk everything for ‘freedom.’

In every generation, there are different kinds of people. Some people stood up and took to the streets, some silently watched, and some were struggling just to make a living.

But history was still made.

“Give me liberty, or give me death” was written on a protestor's banner. Establishing a free, democratic system is no small feat. Thank you to those who gave their all for the freedom we now enjoy. We hope current and future generations will follow in your footsteps.

As you enjoy a final week's worth of Christmas shopping, please remember the people of Hong Kong.

Citizens can't even go shopping without witnessing aggressive policing.

We are approaching a time of year full of distractions - Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year. Please remember to shop ethically. Take a moment to consider the origins of the products in your shopping basket. That Huawei phone might be cheap, but freedom is the most valuable thing we have.

Finally, although it's difficult when immersed in celebrations and festivities, let's all make sure we stay up to date with the political situation in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Xi Jin Ping aims to have the PLA capable of invading Taiwan by 2020 - that's just a couple of weeks away. So, now more than ever, we need to be extremely aware of what's happening around us.

24.11.2019 Raising awareness in Ximen

Why should we bother supporting Hong Kong here in Taiwan?

If you value your human rights and freedom of speech, you should stand with Hong Kong. The fall of Hong Kong will not satiate the Chinese Communist Party's lust for power. As the saying goes, "Hong Kong today, Taiwan tomorrow." In other words, the protesters in Hong Kong are not only fighting for their own freedom, but for our freedom in Taiwan too.

Even in the USA, the Chinese Communist Party is successfully censoring Hollywood and huge companies such as Apple and Blizzard. Apple, for example, removed a crowdsourced application that protesters were using to map the location of (often extremely violent) police, and Blizzard removed a professional Hearthstone player who supports Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is the front line in a battle that everyone who values freedom, regardless of where they live, is involved in. Taiwan, being the Chinese Communist Party's next target, should be particularly invested in Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement.

Knowing that someone is out their fighting for our rights, how could we not support them with all our heart?

-

Yesterday, Taiwan Against Tyranny activists went to Huashan to discuss Hong Kong with visitors. From local students to expats from Australia, everyone voiced support for Hong Kong. So, here in Taipei, what can we do to help Hong Kongers? These three simple points are a great way to start making a difference.

Raise awareness
Share news and footage from Hong Kong on social media. As people who care a lot about Hong Kong, it's easy to forget that not everyone has seen footage of police brutality or heard about the besieged universities. Regularly sharing such content is also a way to combat censorship.

Shop ethically
Boycott Chinese brands, such as Huawei and Xiaomi. In countless ways, supporting such brands is the same as supporting the Chinese Communist Party. We also recommend boycotting companies who bow to the Party, such as Blizzard. Foreign companies need to know that we won't continue buying from them if they bow to authoritarian regimes.

Attend events
Hitting the streets not only builds a community in your local area, but also strengthens the resolve of Hong Kongers fighting for their rights. We need to show these immensely brave people that we're here for them, supporting and thinking about them right now. Events also attract media coverage and show the world that Taiwan is a country that will stand up to tyranny.

Thank you to the students at Taiwan University who took time out of their day to discuss Hong Kong with our team. You were overwhelmingly supportive, and we're feeling more determined than ever here at Taiwan Against Tyranny.

In the student canteen, we also met a young man from Hong Kong updating the Lennon Wall with news of recent events, including the shooting of an unarmed protestor. He told the team he is going back to Hong Kong today. We were moved to see him sharing the current situation with students in Taiwan, and can only imagine what he is going back to in Hong Kong.

We wholeheartedly support you and the people of Hong Kong.
