December 24, 2023

On this day (December 24) in 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 took the famous "Earthrise" photo of Earth from space. The night pilot, Jim Lovell, on a broadcast, has been famously quoted as saying that night, "The vast loneliness is awe-inspiring, and it makes you realize just what you have there on Earth."

For those following Hurricane Idalia, check out our forecasts on the WeatherISH Group page for more frequent updates!

WeatherISH Tropical Discussion
August 29, 2023; afternoon

Hurricane Idalia is currently parallel with the southeastern portion of Florida, measuring sustained maximum windspeeds of 90 MPH, a higher Category 1 hurricane. Today, for Idalia, is the intensification day.

Recent satellite imagery and radar (see below) show that Idalia's eye is growing more defined as we progress through the day. Idalia's track remains the same as the mid-atmospheric trough and subtropical ridging over the Greater Antilles (of which Idalia is wedged between), control the steering for this system.

Intensity models for this storm have adjusted once again, ranging from a Category 1 storm at landfall to a barely Category 3 at landfall. While the GFS and several other models place Idalia at a Category 2 or 3 upon landfall east of Panama City (western Big Bend), the EURO and the CMC are convinced Idalia will not reach Major Hurricane status.

So, what should you expect over the next three days?
While most of Florida runs the risk of flash flooding over the next three days, areas between Jacksonville and just east of Tallahassee are at the most risk (the SPC has classified that area as a moderate risk for flash flooding). Areas further east and south of that area make up a slight and marginal risk of flash flooding. Now, that does not mean you're not getting rain; most of Florida will be sick of rain by the end of the week. While areas surrounding Tallahassee should expect the bulk of heavy rainfall (peaking around 10 inches), Big Bend and northeast of Tampa should receive between 4-6 inches.
Storm Surge is always a concern with any storm, but Big Bend should be especially mindful, with the highest surge expected between 10-15 feet. Please check out the link below to check the surge reach in your area!

Damaging winds should be relatively compact around Idalia and unlikely to extend far beyond Big Bend.

The WEATHERISH TOP 15 WILDEST WEATHER EVENTS:
#15. Aurora Borealis

b. Where can we typically see an Aurora?
The Aurora Borealis displays are typically viewed between the latitudes of 55 and 80 degrees north and during times of solar maximums. They generally have a greater frequency during winter, when nights are longer and the skies are clear.

#11. Raining Fish and Frogs?!
a. What on earth?!
On Oct 23, 1947, fish LITERALLY rained from the sky in Marksville, LA! A waterspout picked up thousands of fish and threw them across a 1000 ft by 80 ft area (The Library of Congress 2010)!

The Yellow River Flood of 1938

Close to half a century later, the Yellow River flooded again in June of 1938, but not for natural reasons. During this time, the Japanese invaded China, and the Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek thought he might stop the invasion by flooding them out. As a result, he ordered the levees destroyed. While this massive flood did slow the Japanese attack, it only mildly impacted military movements. However, this flood did result in estimations of 200,000-900,000 Chinese deaths (Lienhard 2001).

Below are images of segments of the Yellow River in China by National Geographic.

If you haven't joined our WeatherISH, LLC Group page you're missing out on our amazing Winter Weather Series: The WEATHERISH TOP 15 COOLEST WEATHER EVENTS. Our first amazing weather event for discussion has been binary storms! Check one of our posts about two northwest Pacific storms below!

Part II. Typhoon Melor and Tropical Storm Parma

The northwest Pacific accounts for a third of all storm activity on Earth (De et al., 2022). The once Super Typhoon Parma crossed the northern tip of Luzon Island in the Philippines on October 3, 2009 (NASA Earth Observatory 2009). Once the storm produced damaging winds and heavy rains, this storm stalled in the South China Sea (NASA Earth Observatory 2009). As a result of proximity to Super Typhoon Melor, on October 6, Parma reversed direction, moving southeast back through Luzon. Parma made landfall in Luzon Island a total of THREE times as a result of its storm proximity to Super Typhoon Melor (see image 2 below; De, et al. 2022; Liou and Pandey 2020; NASA Earth Observatory 2009). These storms drew closer together, and then Tropical Storm Parma moved south and away from the Super Typhoon, eventually tracking west back into the South China Sea by October 8 (NASA Earth Observatory 2009).
Tropical Storm Parma produced roughly 500 fatalities and damaged millions of dollars of crops and infrastructure through floods and landslides; Parma was slow-moving and thus caused considerable damage (Liou and Pandey 2020; NASA Earth Observatory 2009). The Fujiwhara Effect is often difficult to forecast, and the inaccuracies in tracking increase the dangers of this phenomenon. For example, Typhoon Parma produced unpredicted heavy rainfall in Taiwan and throughout the Luzan Island (De, et al. 2022).

In the first image, TS Parma had sustained windspeeds of 60 mph, and Typhoon Melor had sustained windspeeds of 130 mph (Category 4 typhoon; NASA Earth Observatory 2009). A little over 621 miles separated the centers of these storms on October 6, when the image was taken (NASA Earth Observatory 2009).

WeatherISH Tidbit

Below is the November 1944 to 2020 based (a 77-year compilation) forecast of the number of named storms passing within 150 nautical miles of a location. The Gulf of Mexico gets roughly less than 10 named storms per 100 years in November. Remember that while the end of hurricane season is near (November 30), there have been recorded Atlantic named storms as late as December- the most recent being an Unnamed Subtropical Storm in 2013 that formed on December 5.
