MEDIA FREEDOM FESTIVAL 2023

Media freedom matters not just because it is protected in our constitution, it matters because it is at the heart of democracy. It enables dissension, agreement, diversity of ideas, for ideas to be tested and challenged, for the powerful to be held accountable and for us to give expression to our democracy. Media freedom week seeks to unpack some of these dimensions and to see how it positively impacts our lives."

YouTube Partners with 8th AFRIMA - Reiterates Support For African Music and Creative Economy

Dakar, Senegal - Ahead of the highly anticipated 8th edition of the All-Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) tagged ‘Teranga Edition’ scheduled to hold in Dakar, Senegal on 12-15 January 2023, global entertainment service YouTube, has entered into a partnership with AFRIMA, to help provide artist-focused educational sessions and live streaming support for the awards.

AFRIMA, which is the pinnacle of recognition for African music globally is poised to ensure that the annual 4-day festival is broadcasted to music lovers and stakeholders across the globe. Importantly, YouTube will be conducting workshop sessions to African creatives at the Africa Music Business Summit (one of the events at 8th AFRIMA) to educate on visibility across the global creative ecosystem on a digital platform.

The global streaming service will also be partnering with the All Africa Music Awards on a special incubator programme dubbed, AFRIMA Creative Academy, which aims to empower one million Africans (and in diaspora) in the music and creative industry in the next five years.

The YouTube link for live streaming will be available on AFRIMA’s YouTube page .com/AFRIMAAWARDS.

Subscribe for free to the channel and catch the African Music Business Summit live on Friday Jan 13, 2023, from 9.00am-4.30pm (WAT); while the AFRIMA Music Village will be live later that day from 6.00pm - Till dawn (WAT). Finally, the 8th AFRIMA main awards ceremony will be streamed live from the Red Carpet- 4.30pm (WAT), while the main awards will start at 7.30pm (WAT).

Speaking on the development, the Head, Culture Division at the African Union Commission (AUC), Angela Martins said, “It is important that we spread our efforts to promote inclusivity and ensure that the world can see the impact of AFRIMA at the global centre stage. It is easier for people to now follow up with the award ceremony via their smartphone or other devices. It is also vital we continue to create more education for creators to help them thrive in their crafts, and we are happy to align with YouTube on achieving this shared vision.”

On his part, AFRIMA’s President and Executive Producer, Mr Mike Dada, lauded the streaming service for their support towards the African creative economy.

He said, “We have all seen the rise in circulation of short form audio-visual content on these services and how they have helped to promote African music and creators on a global scale. We believe that sharing knowledge will be a veritable means to expand the revenue funnel for our creators at home and also boost foreign direct investment. In the spirit of uplifting the African creative ecosystem, we are excited to work with a driven and innovative team like YouTube.”

YouTube’s Head of Music Sub-Saharan Africa, Addy Awofisayo said, “YouTube has been consistent in its support for Africa creatives over the years and has played an essential role in the discovery and development of African music & culture and exporting it to audiences and listeners worldwide, enabling collaborations both locally and globally.

“We are excited for our partnership with AFRIMA and the African Union to deepen our relationship with the music stakeholders on the continent, provide educational support for African creatives, and to help music fans be a part of some of the most iconic music moments as they unfold live on YouTube, wherever they are around the globe.”

As the whole world gears towards the 8th edition of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, which will be held from January 12 to 15, 2023, African music lovers are encouraged to keep voting intensively for their desired winners, using the voting portal live at www.afrima.org and take part in the events on social media platforms (IG/TikTok - .official ; Facebook - Afrimawards; Twitter - ; LinkedIn - AFRIMA). The voting process that determines winners at AFRIMA is audited by a globally renowned auditing firm, Pricewaterhousecoopers (PWC).

As announced at the conference, the delegates are expected to arrive on January 11,2023. The AFRIMA ceremony is scheduled to kick-start fully on Thursday January 12, 2023, with a Host Country Tour, School visit and gift presentation (as part of AFRIMA’s Corporate Social Responsibility), as well as a Welcome Soiree in the evening, in Dakar.

The 4-day event continues on Friday January 13, 2023, with the Africa Music Business Summit (AMBS) at the Grand Theatre, in Dakar. The AMBS is Africa’s largest gathering of creative professionals in the music industry and it features workshops and panel discussions on issues and opportunities within the African music industry.

The 8th AFRIMA will continue with high momentum at the AFRIMA Music Village at the Grand Theatre, which will be a free-to-enter concert featuring live performances from the biggest music stars across the continent.

On the eve of the awards ceremony, on Saturday January 14, 2023, the events will begin with Main rehearsals, Media engagements and a Courtesy Visit to the President of Senegal.

There will also be a live recording booth at the venue for musicians across all five regions of the continent, and in the diaspora, to explore for collaborative recordings. The day’s activities will climax with a Nominees exclusive party.

Finally, the 8th AFRIMA will wrap up on Sunday January 15, 2023, at the 15-000 capacity Dakar Arena, in Dakar, with the live Awards ceremony broadcast by 104 TV Stations to over 84 countries around the world.

TIME TO BE UNFVCKEN APOLOGETIC ABOUT INCLUSION

AND THE 2022 FEATHER AWARDS NOMINEES ARE….

The highly anticipated Feather Awards is almost upon us and earlier today the colourful list of 2022 nominees were announced following the hoisting of the Pride flag at the home of human rights Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg.

The intimate affair boasted speakers including this year's Award hosts the Modiselle sisters, Refilwe, Bontle and Candice, Thami Dish as well as the reigning Miss South Africa Ndavi Nokeri alongside Miss SA CEO Stephanie Courtney- Weil. Other speakers included Dr Dulcy Rakumakoe, Constitutional Hill's Janine Muthusamy and Dawn Robertson, Zingisa Jemsana - COO of Market Theatre, PFSAQ's Linah Ngwenya, Fundi Ndaba from FEW and Sign language activist Andiswa Gebashe.

The awards return to the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and set to take place on Thursday, 10th November 2022.

Category nominees which comprised of individuals and organisations from both the private and business sectors are selected by a knowledgeable panel consisting of members of the media and entertainment industry, who are firmly in touch with what’s hot and what's not on the South African social circuit.

Each nominated individual, organisation or brand, have in one way or the other either represented, inspired, or celebrated the LGBTIQ+ community with excellence and distinction over the past twelve months. These nominees are selected from industries across lifestyle (entertainment, arts and sports), politics and even business.

The Feathers Awards, now in it’s 14th year is done in partnership with the Thami Dish Foundation who focus on desensitising the LGBTIQ community to the public at large, via the LGBTIQ+ Dialogues, Workshop and Trainings done in communities across South Africa.

“There is still much work to be done. COVID19 slowed down the process and now it’s time to accelerate the transformation and get back on track. And it’s going to take all of us to do it. From the public sector and the private sector, government and businesses need to put their money where their mouths are” commented Thami Kotlolo, co-founder of the Feather Awards. ‘Inclusivity is not about celebrating the community for a few days in a year. Government and corporates need to support the community, get involved in programmes and initiatives 365 days of the year, not just in June or October when the exercise of ticking boxes needs to happens. We, the q***r community, are unfvcken apologetic about being heard, being seen, being recognised and been included. This doesn’t take away from organisations who offer unwavering support for the community. We see you and value your support. To all the nominees best of luck for the upcoming awards next month.

Y TRIBUTE TO LUMKO JOHNSON

Thursday, 15 September 2022 -  It is with deep sadness that Y pays tribute to one of its beloved talent, Lumko Johnson.

Lumko’s family announced the news of their untimely passing in a statement released on Wednesday evening.

The producer of The Nightcap with Lula Odiba joined the youth radio station almost six years ago.  They continued to make a difference in the media space, at Y and in the LGBTQIA+ community with their creativity, critical thinking, professional aptitude and sound grasp of societal issues.

Lumko, an integral part of the Y family, conceptualised, wrote and directed Y’s first audio drama series Tequila AF.  This show was theirs from start to finish.

“On behalf of all of us at Y, we extend our sincerest condolences to Lumko’s family and friends, as well as the team at Y and our listeners. Lumko sought to shape the media industry in a positive way and I believe they left the space in a better place than they found it,” said Haseena Cassim, MD of Y.

In paying tribute to Lumko, Lula Odiba said, “I started my journey on The Nightcap with Lumko and they taught me so much. It was an honour to work with Lumko.  All I’d like to say to Lumko: Thank you for making me smarter, braver and kinder.  I will miss your laugh and our gossip sessions.  I love you and thank you for everything.”

Thank you for your contribution to Y, your friendship and love.  Rest well, Lumko “Johnson” Leqela.

WE NEVER DIE, WE MULTIPLY PUMA X COTTON FEST DROP NEXT WEEK

Cape Town, South Africa – PUMA with the Cotton Fest team today announces the launch of the new PUMA x Cotton Fest F.C. collection set to drop next Thursday, 22 September.

Designed in collaboration with fashion savvy, rap artist Riky Rick and inspired by the sport aspect of the festival’s “University of Cotton Fest” collegiate theme, the collection’s DNA is rooted in 90’s football jerseys that have become iconic and revered fashion statement pieces.

The collection includes a T7 tracksuit top, soccer shorts, football top, and soccer balls designed by the late Riky Rick himself.

“We are very privileged to be able to bring what turned out to be Riky’s final collection to the market. As with everything Riky did, he was hands on with this collection and its Cotton Fest F.C. aesthetic,” said Hayden Manuel, PUMA South Africa Sportstyle Marketing Manager.

As part of the launch, PUMA has committed to a R100 000 bursary for final year AFDA students to cover shortfalls on their fees and assist them to graduate. “The arts were close to Riky’s heart and he was a former AFDA student, so we and Riky’s family agreed that supporting the students would be an appropriate way to honour his legacy,” said Manuel.

The capsule collection is supported by an exciting marketing campaign featuring Riky’s wife Bianca, kids Maik and Jordan, his brothers Themba, Toby and Sheikani, alongside the rest of the Cotton Fest fam.

“Building on Riky’s legacy to creating a platform for young creatives, our family fully endorse the campaign, especially with regards to the bursary and giving back to students. We are also excited about the range coming to life finally, and ready to go to market” stated Bianca Naidoo.

The PUMA Cotton Fest F.C. collection will be available at most PUMA.com outlets from next week.

This includes the following stores:

Gauteng: Menlyn, Braamfontein Select, Eastgate, Fourways, Mall of Africa, Sandton

Y delivers On Road, a visual content experience of Jozi street culture through the eyes of Owen Miller.

South Africa’s biggest commercial youth radio station, Y, launches a 6-episode medium format content concept that delves into the culture of art, film, music and fashion.

The show covers everything from the growth of sustainable fashion, the difference between story-telling and self-expression through commercials and other forms of visual content, street art in the city and its translation to galleries as well as the people behind the music industry.

The host, Owen Miller, says that growing up in the East Rand with a lot of diversity but not much exposure made him want to move to the city as soon as he matriculated. He has been living in Jozi for almost a decade where his deep interest for the various sub-cultures was fulfilled. “On Road is a visual diary of our art and the communities that shape these movements. It’s about the culture - praising those that came before and inspiring those that will follow,” he said.

“This production illustrates the next step in Y’s evolution. The brand refresh in October 2021 was the gateway to fulfilling the brand promise of serving its audiences access to all things Y. The audio drama series, experiential events and now longer format visual content displays the brand’s commitment to never standing still and its promise to entrench itself in culture.” said Y’s Managing Director, Haseena Cassim.

Last year the youth brand dropped the successful YouTube series The Banques and Venom Show, which has received over 1.5 million views. Tequila AF, received success as young adults were drawn to the magic of the audio drama.

The 6, 13-minute episodes in the On Road series, can be viewed on the Y App as well as eVOD (local on demand platform) from the 7th of September.
