Luckily for us Emerald City citizens, we can enjoy the splendor of sailors invading the city yearly during Fleet Week. A part of Seafair, the Seattle Fleet Week Boeing Maritime Celebration has been held at the waterfront since 1950. What is it? Well, it’s when US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard ships that have been deployed return to dock in major cities for one week.

Fleet Week starts with a Parade of Ships on Tuesday, July 30th, when all the ships make their way to dock. Read here for a list of ship tour dates and times.

While it’s the weekend before Seafair Weekend, the Torchlight Parade that passes by Westlake Park kicks off a very busy week of maritime-adjacent partying. Expect over 100 entries, according to organizers, which includes presenting partner Alaska Airlines. Athletes, military bands, and, of course, pirates will be in attendance. Show up a little early for the pre-parade festival at Westlake Park.

In honor of their fifth birthday, the theater put together a program called The Ten Pillars of Beacon, featuring ten movies they screened in the last half-decade that speak to their programming ethos. For their ninth pillar—”A Woman Losing Her Mind”—the brains at The Beacon chose Andrzej Żuławski’s feel-bad masterpiece, Possession.

Each year, Seattle-area foodies unite for a fest on the Seattle Center's lawns. Now one of the oldest culinary events in town, Bite of Seattle (also known as “The Bite”) dates back to 1982 when the owner of the local restaurant Barnaby’s came up with the idea.

Now under new management, the long-standing Seattle food festival will reintroduce sample-sized portions and cooking demos by professional chefs.

It feels like every hood in the city has a summer street fest. But as Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, West Seattle’s annual event is a three-day affair. This year, The Junction will fill with music stages, food and craft vendors, a beer garden, and a kids zone. And on Sunday during the fest, visitors can hit the farmer’s market to load up on fruits and veggies.

Unlike other local outdoor movie screenings, the city of Kirkland keeps the tradition up year-round with beach screenings in the winter and spring for those hardy enough to brave the PNW’s weather, so they’re very well-practiced in building community events. Of note, while most outdoor summer movies are projected and necessitate it be dusk, Kirkland has invested in a giant LED screen for all screenings. But now that the clouds have parted, the city to the northeast has a series of ten films in two different locations that’s sure to tickle the fancy of somebody in your party. It’s all free, to grab a blanket, curl up on the beach or the lawn, and get a load of this lineup.

The recurring Taylor Swift-themed dance and drag party that happens at the Capitol Hill music venue Neumos, “Taylor’s Version,” has had as many iterations as Swift has had exes. But as the “tortured poet” herself might say, “it’s better to have lost than never to have loved at all.” This July, the party is moving into its “sparks flying” era. And what better way to celebrate freedom than to revel in a woman who is “unafraid“?

Spend the Wednesday night before a four-day weekend letting your SWIFTIE FLAG FLY with the city’s best drag queens.
