Spring DEI Summit Spotlight - Lesa Williams-George

Lesa is a provincial mentor and an instructor for the MentorCoaching Additional Qualification course with the Ontario Principals’ Council in addition to being an International Coaching Federation Certified Transformational Coach and Mentor. She holds a diploma in mental health and addiction counseling and trauma informed response therapy. Being a life-long learner, she continues her growth and learning journey through Indigenous Canadian and African ways of knowing and being, healing and wellness diasporas. Lesa serves on the Higher Education Commission of the National Association of Black Educators (NABSE USA) and the Ontario affiliate ONABSE.

The parent and school relationship is one of the most important partnerships for supporting student well-being, improved behaviour, social skill, and high academic achievement. This relationship is often characterized by tension between schools and families and uncomfortable high-stakes conversations. For Black families, this tension is further complicated by race, identity, systemic barriers, and social conditions. In this session, participants will take a deep dive into understanding some of the issues and nuanced challenges that make it difficult for Black parents to navigate the education system. Participants will leave with some strategies and useful tips for co-constructing effective relationships with Black families and community partners.

Summit this week is SOLD OUT!

Spring DEI Summit Spotlight – Jason Hendrix Burt

After 11 years as assistant principal in North Carolina, Jason Hendrix Burt (M.S.A.) came to Ontario in 2014 to become vice-principal of the Avon Maitland District School Board and subsequently their Human Rights and Equity Lead Administrator in 2021. Burt is committed to ensuring equity, anti-racist, and anti-oppression education and inclusivity practices permeate all aspects of the district’s education, guidelines, programs and procedures.

As a leader, one must understand the impacts of their role and positionality, and learn to temporarily suspend their judgment to acknowledge the experience of the “other.” At the Summit, Burt will help executives and managers who are committed to addressing and dismantling anti-Black racism and oppression by building their confidence in communicating with only three words.
