Today marks the start of Black History Month! 🤩
In addition to our regular wedding content, we will be dropping some knowledge on Black wedding traditions and history this month.
Let’s start with the tradition of “jumping the broom”!
👉The history of this tradition is complex. Some argue that it originated in West Africa where the brooms were waved over the couple’s head (to ward off evil spirits), then placed on the ground for them to jump over.
Others argue that it originated in Wales among the Roma community who could not wed in Welsh churches.
It’s also been said that during slavery in the United States, enslaved people would jump the broom to symbolize their union.
Despite its complex origin story, the tradition saw a resurgence among the Black community, primarily after it was featured in the novel, “Roots: The Saga of an American Family” in 1976.
While this tradition has various meanings across cultures, this practice continues at many African American ceremonies to pay tribute to our ancestors while celebrating Black love. This is just one of the most common meanings of the tradition in the Black culture.
