They were supposed to be Bell Peppers...🙄

Growing a garden this summer (or at least attempting to) has taught me a lot about God, the Vinedresser. Now, I know that vinedressing and simple gardening are quite different, but I understood the basics: good soil, water, and sunlight. Check. But pruning spotty leaves? Trellis early? Snipping off early buds? I was otherwise clueless.

For example, I should've plucked off some of my earlier pepper blossoms to make room for bigger, more mature peppers. I should've plucked some of the male flowers off of my squash so it would have the energy to spend on producing more of what would actually bear fruit: female flowers. I definitely should've bit the bullet and trellised my big tomato plant early--by the time I did it took two of us to wrangle a stalk that was already "set in its ways".

Do you get the picture?

Before I learned all this, it hurt my heart to pluck and prune. It felt like a crime at first to trim and train. But now I have a greater understanding of the bigger picture.

Diseased leaves MUST be cut off. Some plants NEED additional structure. Zealous squash and peppers NEED help directing their energies to activities that will result in not just a healthier yield but a yield at all!

So be encouraged friend. This pruning or training you're experiencing is purposeful. It has an end goal in mind. The Gardener/Vinedresser of your soul is very good at His job, and His crop always yields in abundance.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit."
John 15:1‭-‬2 ESV
