Teaching the youngest generation to stop and smell the ranunculus...Most ranunculus don't have a fragrance but the French "Ginette" does have a scent reminiscent of a rose. This little flower lover enjoys visiting her Nana during farm pop ups. Her Nana likes it even more!

What is the SAN JOAQUIN FLOWER COLLECTIVE?…We are a group of 8 local, like-minded flower farmers who came together in community to support one another in our shared mission to grow the best possible flowers/foliage, and make them readily available to our local, talented florists who help our Valley to celebrate life’s special events, cheer us up when needed and surround us with the beauty that is flowers. The platform that we are using to do this is called Rooted Farmers (Rooted Farmers]). Our Spring Launch which will be March 3rd, 2023. Florists can make a free account and then place orders from among the inventory of 8 farms for pick up at one central location in Fresno once a week on Thursdays. The platform has fotos, color searching and stem length. There is nothing like fresh, locally grown flowers. I encourage all local florists to set up an account this winter Rooted Farmers] for the San Joaquin Flower Collective. This way you will be ready March 3 and beyond for the blooms we are patiently growing for you, including, but not limited to: double, fragrant Daffs, specialty Ranunculus and Anemones (including Butterfly, Italian & French varieties), Alliums, Poppies (including Hummingbird), Delphiniums, Stock, Snaps, English Roses, double/fringed/parrot/French Tulips, Nigella, Iris (bearded and Dutch), Yarrows, Leucojeum, Sweet Peas, Bells of Ireland, Daucus, Ammi, Campanula, Larkspur, Aquilegia, Dianthus, Trachelium, Mint, Eucalyptus, Dill, Olive, Dusty Miller, Bupleurum, and more and these are just spring flowers! Florists, please also follow for more updates.

Just a 30-second video of some of the flowers coming to River Park Farmer’s Market () today. I’ll be there tonight from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. putting bouquets together and helping you put your own bouquet together! Yes, you get to select the flowers you want! Check out the white Canterbury Bells. These are cool season annuals that are fall planted in our climate zone, 9B. They did amazingly well this season and last so long in the vase. Message me if you want some but can’t get there tonight! I’ll have them at the market on Saturday, also.

Much to the dismay of the bees, it’s time to pull the poppies to make room for, I don’t know, maybe…sunflowers? More zinnias? Celosia, ageratum, amaranthus…so many choices.

So looking forward to Colibri Poppy season! Icelandic poppies do so well here in Zone 9B. This will be my first year growing these beautiful Italian Poppies and I can’t wait to see how they compare to my Champagne Bubbles Poppies❣️

There is something so elegant about anemones…and ranunculus aren’t too shabby either.

Spring always wants to push through whether we are ready or not. It starts out little by little and it is definitely peeking through today. Buckets of flowers are a ways off but let me know if I can put a little something together in the weeks ahead for you or someone you know who might like a taste of spring straight from our sustainably-growing field to your vase. “Let’s make a bouquet!”

I’ll be at River Park Farmers’ Market () tomorrow, Saturday, Dec.11, with lots of beautiful, potted, JUMBO Paperwhites and Christmas Red Amaryllis budded up and ready for gift-giving or enlivening your own Christmas spirit. Bring the outside inside this Christmas and create or continúe a holiday tradition. It’s like a bouquet that lasts and lasts. The Paperwhites can be planted outside and will bloom again next spring (2023) in the garden in our zone 9b. Amaryllis bulbs can also be planted outside in our zone and will rebloom in spring 2023 but they can also be treated in such a way to bloom again indoors for Christmas 2022. Not to worry, I have a little pamphlet explaining their care. They are super easy and provide amazing blooms during our dreary mid-winter season. Come out and do some shopping for unique gifts, fresh fruits and vegetables and delicious food at the best farmer’s market in Fresno and SUPPORT LOCAL!

So, it’s was around 10 pm this week and I was out in the farm/garden harvesting flowers for market with my trusty headlamp…well, I just thought you might enjoy a glimpse of what happens at night on Central California flower farms…!

It was a pink, white and burgundy kind of day for a few centerpieces going out today for a very special event tomorrow.

Getting ready to make bouquets for the River Park Farmers Market, Saturday, 10am -2pm. You will find me there ready to answer all of your flower and flower gardening questions to the best of my ability! So many flowers to work with, it will be fun to put them all together. I’ll also have bouquets ready for a Cakes by Kris (.kris) pop-up tomorrow from 12 - 5 at 7394 E Garland in Clovis. You probably already know she bakes the yummiest of cakes and baked specialty items! Can’t wait to try something, if there’s any left by the time I get there! I’ll also bring more flowers if I have any. REMEMBER: Keep your vase as clean as your tea cup (and you know where to fill those vases up tomorrow!) and love one another (that’s for everyday❤️). -Mary Pat

I’ve never grown delphiniums before, so I didn’t realize how big they could get! I’m definitely going to grow more next year.

Things are pretty quiet at Wynnie’s Flower Farm but I can manage to find a few early boomers/late bloomers. This was for a pick up today. The double fragrant daffodils are up... no blossoms to see yet, but some alliums, iris, freesia, fancy tulips are pushing their way up with baby pastel ranunculus and sweet peas trying hard.

Lisianthus—I managed to kill the last of my seed starts of Lisianthus. I put them by the hose bib near where I was going to plant them out to see what would happen since they had been marooned in their seed trays since January (yes, January, shame on me) and forgot about them for a few days. Ah, the life of the gardener! Time to clean them up, plant something else and maybe look for a more reliable source of Lisianthus;-)

My hollyhocks are coming to an end but I have enjoyed these giant biennials this spring. They must be at least 8’ tall and have put out tons of stems. I found that cutting them early in the morning into clean buckets of cool water that I had earlier dropped a CVBN tab (a water conditioning tablet favored by flower farmers) into a bucket of cool water and then when I got back to the house immersing them in boiling water and letting them cool in it enhanced their vase life to about 5 days. They are still not a long-lived cut but they are striking in a vase. Even though they take 2 summers to bloom I think I might try growing them again. I am not sure what variety these are because I used seed from the variety that has been reseeding in my garden for almost 20 years. They did develop rust this spring but so apparently do almost all hollyhocks. It didn’t affect the blooms but the bottom of the plants got rather unattractively crispy. I’ll save some seed pods and bring them to market this summer if any one is interested in planting some in the back of their garden this summer for flowers next spring. Sharing is one of the most fun aspects of gardening ;-)

This was a fun find yesterday. I planted a 40’ vegetable section in my flower beds this year and the veggies are doing great but these yellow squash were a surprise! It’s so nice to have a vegetable garden. I highly recommend it. Its not too late in Fresno to put one in from seed/transplants;-). You will be happy you did come August!
