At the end of August, Lowkey was in London to experience Notting Hill Carnival. Here’s your lowdown of Europes biggest street party…
======================

2022 marked the return of Notting Hill Carnival to the streets of Notting Hill, Portobello, and Ladbroke Grove.

This is an area inscribed in music history that has given rise to current artists such as AJ Tracey, Lava Larue, Cleo Sol, Lily Allen, Gorillaz and Digga D.

It has also birthed legendary counterculture acts such as The Clash, Pink Floyd, the Deviants and is the place where Jimi Hendrix died.

Between 1.5-2 million people show-out for the largest street event in Europe and second largest annual arts event globally after Rio carnival. The roads shut down and become property of the people allowing for families, and friends from all over to enjoy the vibe.

The carnival combines the efforts of 40,000 volunteers, 50,000 performers. Food stalls come with food from all over the world and people even selling goods from their front gardens.

Dotted around the area are 36 legendary sound systems providing the soundtrack for the weekend.

The first system was brought into the U.K from Jamaica by Duke Vin.
This year stages are now host to huge artists such as Koffee, Sean Paul, Tiwa Savage and meg the stallion.

It is a showcase of London’s vibrant diversity and appetite for culture.

But many don’t know that Notting Hill Carnival’s roots are borne out of a community expressing its culture against the pain of oppression.

Without the murder of Kelso Cochrane in the area that sparked the 1959 Notting Hill race riot began, there is a belief that the carnival wouldn’t exist.

The harassment of the Mangrove restaurant which became unofficial HQ for the carnival and has been dramatized in the recent ‘Small Axe’ anthology series directed by Steve McQueen.

DJ Rina was the 2017 Red Bull 3Style Japan Champion.
As the first Japanese woman DJ Champion, she also participated in the 2018 World Championship in Poland.

She has since been accredited with an official Pioneer DJ school teaching license and has started her own DJ school titled CTD Academy in 2020.

As a representative for women DJs, her focus is working both in Japan and throughout all of Asia.

This Friday (April 2nd) marks our first talk of 2021.

Since the New Year, we’ve seen a worrying influx of anti-Asian hate crimes spread across the USA including the tragic shootings in Atlanta of 8 people, 6 of whom were Asian women.

In Japan, we have seen sexist attitudes towards women force the removal of both Chairman & Creative Director of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics committee.

Our focus for this discussion will be the unjust biases towards Asian women and how this has been highlighted by the recent spike in anti-Asian hate crimes.

We are really excited to have a strong panel of women with expertise in the subject to help touch on these topics.

私たちが主催しているトークの、2021年初となる会を、今週の金曜日（4月2日）に行います。今年に入り、米国ではアジア系をターゲットにしたヘイトクライムが増加しています。先日アトランタ州で起こった銃乱射事件の８名の犠牲者のうち、６名はアジア人女性でした。日本においては、東京五輪組織委の会長と、クリエイティブディレクターが、女性差別発言をし、辞任しました。

今回のトークでは、増加しているアジア系に対するヘイトクライムにより、より明るみになっているアジア系女性に対するバイアスにフォーカスしたいと思います。

このトッピクについて様々な視点を共有していただくため、強力な女性陣をパネルメンバーとしてお迎えしています。
