Introducing the man you're all coming to see:

Moopie is a quiet achiever. An explorative, kaleidoscopic DJ who steadily earned his reputation through word of mouth and curator connecting artists from a multitude of worlds, his adventurous and open-minded approach to electronic music has earned him a place as one of the most curious
and versatile DJs in the world.

Based in Naarm (Melbourne), Moopie is a storyteller whose sense for rhythm has enchanted a diversity of audiences around the world, whether through peaks at Dekmantel, sunrise at Sustain-Release or all-night sets in the clubs of London, Amsterdam or Berlin. His record bag is filled with strange and beautiful oddities that reveal themselves at the most perfect times, leading listeners into cathartic sonic realms while reminding them of heavenly forgotten gems. A careful balance of the heavy and light, the fast and slow, and the unashamedly fun and emotional. Mixmag named him as a Breakthrough DJ in 2023, while DJ Mag and BBC Radio 1 Dance named him as One to Watch in 2024. His intuitive nature, sensitivity to context and adaptability to genre boundaries have been lauded by Ben UFO and Helena Hauff, who both regularly invite him to play back-to-back sets.

As the label runner and curator of A Colourful Storm, he shares his warm and emotive inner world. Acclaimed by publications as varied as The Wire and Resident Advisor for its artistic and sonic diversity, the label has given a platform to local and international acts and maintains a busy release, event and NTS Radio schedule. Its name reflects the colourful sides of Moopie's music collection and personality, through lost indie-pop grails, contemplative ambience, four-to-the-floor
dancefloor cuts and avant-garde soundsystem music.

Moopie's warmth and affection for his audience, peers and craft shines in his love for sharing and contextualising music to listeners around the world. He stands out as a daring yet refreshingly humble figure, quietly redefining expectations while turning dancefloors inside out.

We're so excited to be hosting him tomorrow! Grab a ticket and come along for an excellent party.

Vertigo and Primal Rhythm Present: Moopie at the Milk Bar!

Beijing-born, Melbourne-based Moopie – Matthew Xue – started turning heads in the mid-2010s with DJ sets impressing the likes of Donato Dozzy and Silent Servant on their respective Australian tours (the latter handpicking him to contribute a mix for James Ruskin’s Jealous God release). Developing his daring and eclectic sound, he connects strands from the far corners of electronic music history and pushes them forward alongside contemporary and unreleased cuts: an open-minded approach can be heard on his dancefloors at festivals (Berlin Atonal, Meredith, Inner Varnika) and clubs (Kantine am Berghain, Tresor, Globus.

His vision as a DJ is inextricably linked to developing his label A Colourful Storm in 2016 as a platform for new and emerging artists to give new life to forgotten classics. A Colorful Storm was the first to champion breakout artist Mark (aka Klon Dump) while introducing Christoph de Babalon to a new generation of fans. And who else is brave enough to release lost indie-pop holy grails alongside contemporary four-to-the-floor cuts, industrial-leaning experimentalism and drum’n’bass abstractions?
