David Mancuso’s loft party from 1970 still runs to this day even after his passing, hosted by regulars & veterans who keep the same ethos of letting a record play from start to finish, no mixing. Each record is clapped and cheered as it finishes in what is an incredibly magical way to listen and dance to music at a party.
The New York dancers & characters just blow you away watching them move.

I’m told his records are still played & the equipment they’re using ain’t no technics 1210s either, some real audiophile vinyl player s**t going on that was past my pay grade 😏

The eve saw a special moment with the release of hundreds of balloons during the climax of Ain’t No Mountain High enough an experience I’ll never forget!

About the EP
Reflections Within is a mergence of Alton Miller's signature house style with tracks which feature the wondrous vocal abilities of Giinja Flame - providing an enriching and all encompassing experience. ‘No Fomo’, which opens the record up, and ‘No Vibe Check’, feature Flame up top above the sea of instrumental excellence. ‘No Fomo’ strips the backing track to a strong pulse, with Flame given plenty of room to showcase her talents. ‘Vibe Check’ contains a delightful chord progression alongside sweeping jazzy lines, with Flame’s voice gently but powerfully floating above the kicks, effortlessly wrapping the dance floor up, moving hearts and minds along.

After seeing the Grimes incident at Coachella I thought I’d make a post which is really aimed at new people wanting to learn how to DJ and have any desires to play outside of their homes.

This isn’t a post attacking how people DJ or what equipment you should or shouldn’t use in the long run. It’s what I tell people when they say I want to learn to DJ and im thinking about buying a controller, where you then DJ through a laptop.

In the DJ world you will have older DJs saying you’re not a proper DJ if you use sync or use controllers and you will have other who say it doesn’t matter what you DJ on as long as its good. This last statement for me is true. But it maters for new DJs for certain reasons and I felt the need to highlight it

What I always say to people when they want to learn on this new technology is that you have to understand a few things. Buying a controller you can become a DJ over night by simply planning a set on your laptop based on Key signatures, bpm, and then use the sync and just press play. The issue with this are as follows. When you do this you’re not learning what It means to read a room, build groove, understand how tracks are built and how they flow in and out of each other, how to mix different styles. This translates to the dancefloor and you can feel the difference. The set you built in your bedroom could easily not be fitting the reality of the room and energy levels may be totally different to what you’d imagined.
When something goes wrong like what happen with Grimes you’re now a fish out of water, you don’t know how to mix tracks and you are ultimately lost when the tech fails. I’ve seen DJs not play their set because of this which is insane to me. When you have music on USBs and working CDJs there should never been an excuse, if you knew how to DJ, right?

The fundamentals of DJing is to learn how to beat match first, you do this with your ear. The next is understanding the music, how they blend together, how you build grooves and energy, what tracks work together, how you mix different scenarios together. These things take usually minimum of a year and is something you develop over your lifetime through experience. You learn through repetition. Folks who just walk into the new tech are missing these building blocks and this is why starting with controllers and sync and key mixing for me is a net negative. It’s fine if you just want to have fun at home and house parties but this post is aimed at people who genuinely want to DJ in a bar or club

There are no short cuts in life if you want quality. Its not about bashing new kids for using this stuff but more trying to show the importance of these things. A lot of the time it just sounds like old men spouting off to the new generation and it never comes across right as it’s always in attacking manners. You don’t know what you don’t know and you can blame people for not knowing these things. Teaching folks and guiding is a much more fruitful path.

Sadly it takes events like this at Coachella to show the importance of learning the fundamentals

My message is simple to new DJ’s, learn to DJ with your ear first, understand what that process is and practice & put the time in and you will soon understand its importance. I’m not saying any of the tech isn’t great for DJing because it certainly is, but you go to a club and something fails you’ll quickly feel like a kid lost at sea. Fundamentals are being lost in all walks of life and we need to preserve things which are so obvious important

I understand the price of DJ equipment, records can seem extremely high but most folks I knew started on cheap second hand gear and didn’t get the -higher range equipment till years later. There are entry points for learning at the right price, second hand records, cheap turn tables. You don’t need pioneer and technics to start. Can imagine you can get some pretty s**tty CDJs for the price of a controller, we all did it this way.
Technology can be our enemy and our friend unless it’s used properly.
