Mr. Stamper's advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community and his support for NELA Pride left an indelible mark. Our large skeleton from Skeletons on Tower last year was a reimagining of one his most famous drag outfits, a testament to his influence and was affectionately dedicated to him.

You are greatly missed.

"Charles Stamper, affectionately known as “Freeman”, was a longtime supporter and alumnus of ULM who passed away in October 2023. He received his bachelor's degree from ULM (then Northeast Louisiana State College) in 1968. After graduating from his beloved alma mater, Freeman enlisted in the US Army and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal. In 2022, Freeman received the Warhawk Ambassador Award and posthumously awarded the George T. Walker award in 2023.
Freeman, a.k.a. “Stephanny”, was also a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. Freeman was a secretary, a decorated Veteran, an advisor to beauty pageants, an advocate for Gay rights, and an amazing square dancer! This film captures a life worth living and worth discovering. His was an authentic life. And in the end…he gave it all away to help others. As Freeman said, “I’d give you the dress off my back!”

The Laramie Project recounts the true events surrounding the 1998 hate crime that shocked the nation. Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming, was brutally assaulted and left to die because of his sexual orientation. This powerful play, directed by Steven Burnside, delves into the emotional aftermath in the town of Laramie, WY
and highlights critical themes of prejudice, identity, and humanity.

Do not miss this compelling production that invites audiences to reflect on one of the most significant cultural moments of our time.

For Tickets:
• October 31 – November 2 Performances: Purchase Here
