So, the question I most often get is “How did you become Jack?”. How did all this get started? Well, I’ll tell you.
I love Halloween. I love dressing up in costume and becoming a character. I LOVE IT! However, I was never involved in theater nor acting. I wish the whole cosplay movement would have become popular when I was younger because I would certainly be involved in it years and years ago. But, back to my story. I moved to Florida in 2012. In looking to make new friends I became involved in several community groups. One of them being the Pensacola Beach Woman’s Club, that’s right, Woman not Women. They have monthly luncheons and speakers. They have fundraisers that benefit local charitable organizations and groups and do a lot of volunteering in the community. Good stuff.
They also love Halloween and every year they have a costume contest. A very serious costume contest. These women put together the most original, funniest and most amazing costumes. Its all about being original and different and getting a good laugh. I really wanted to come up with something amazing but I was stuck. So, while flipping through the tv channels, I came across Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I do love the POTC movies! So, I started watching. At the beginning of this movie Penelope Cruz is dressed head to toe, facial hair and all, as Captain Jack Sparrow. Whoa, I thought to myself, I wonder if I could pull that off.
With determination I went to where you can learn to do anything, YouTube. I searched for Jack Sparrow makeup and what do you know, up pops a video with a girl turning herself into Jack Sparrow. Now, just because you find it on YouTube doesn’t mean its going to be easy or cheap. I bought a costume, made a wig and practiced my makeup and swagger. When I arrived only the few that I advised of my costume knew who I was. I have never been so popular at a club meeting in my life! Needless to say, I won the costume contest. I believe the prize was a door mat. But so much more came out of this silliness. People said you need to visit the Children’s Hospital, you need to be in the parades, you need to help with fundraisers etc. So, I did.
