Maestro Monday!

A few weeks ago, on July 25, American conductor, composer, and pianist Brett Mitchell shared a post about Maestro Maazel. Mitchell worked Maestro at the Castleton Festival in 2009 and 2010. Like Maestro, Mr. Mitchell is well known for his affinity for working with and mentoring young musicians aspiring to be professional orchestral players. Maestro’s dream to hand over the baton lives on!

In his post, Mitchell said:

“14 years ago today, I had the distinct privilege of sharing the podium with Lorin Maazel during a concert at his 2010 Castleton Festival. Conducting Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 3 in front of such a towering figure could have been nerve-wracking, but Maestro was as supportive during that performance as he was before and after - an iconic conductor and even greater mentor. Grateful always.”

We loved reading this so very much - thanks for sharing, @‌maestromitchell!

Do you have a fond memory of our beloved Maestro? Please let us know - we’d love to share your memories and experiences as well!

Castleton Festival has a rich history that spans nearly 200 years. It is one of the oldest continuously operating farms in Rappahannock County, Virginia - the original Manor House was built by J.F. Browning in the early 19th century.

Over a century later, the quiet farm was rediscovered by world-famous conductor Lorin Maazel. In 1988, the young maestro happened upon Castleton while lost driving through the Virginia foothills. Enchanted by the meadows, he returned with his wife, German actress Dietlinde Turban-Maazel. Together, they completed the restoration of Castleton Farms and acquired 550 surrounding acres in order to preserve the idyllic countryside.

In 1997, the Maazels turned Castleton into a renowned center for the arts with the 145-person Theater House, once an abandoned chicken coop! This beautiful theater now hosts world-class performing arts events featuring some of the most sought-after international musicians, singers, and actors.

As the artist's program grew, so did Castleton. To support new training seminars and opera festivals, the family created residences, performance halls, and spaces for artists to rest and play. More than 20 years later, the estate has emerged as a naturally perfect venue — a bucolic village of homes where friends and loved ones can gather and share in the magic of Castleton.

Throwback to last year’s USC School of Music Residency!

“You are my everything!” – a musical journey into Romanticism at its most exalted, this residency featured vocal works by Robert and Clara Schumann performed by tenor Dominic Armstrong, mezzo-soprano Rachel Calloway, and pianist Joel Harder, in collaboration with the University of South Carolina School of Music students.

“You are my everything!” wrote the 21-year-old piano prodigy Clara Wieck to the 30-year-old music journalist and composer Robert Schumann shortly before their wedding. It had taken them years to fight for Clara’s father to agree to their marriage. Robert’s enthusiasm for the world of song, poetry and the human voice was boundless, and he composed incessantly, while Clara, a celebrated pianist, composed as well, toured Europe, performed Robert’s music, took care of the household, and, along the way, gave birth to seven children. A husband in the shadow of a successful wife? Clara, a forgotten composer? Their deep connection was always about collaboration and reciprocity, mutual respect and admiration, love and encouragement. Two people, deeply enmeshed, always listening and sharing in their music. After Robert fell ill and died in a mental asylum at the age of 46, Clara contributed more than anyone else to the dissemination of his works and to his fame as a composer.

Robert and Clara Schumann: a great love story that is exemplary, tragic, poignant, and modern. What a wonderful performance this was!

Castleton Family Friday! Meet Jared Alan Yoakem!

"I remember in January 2023, at the first dinner for Michelle and Paul’s Vocal Immersion Program, in which I am program manager, the artists were asking managerial questions to the Faculty. It was my first residency to manage at CF and I was so in awe of working alongside Michelle and Paul, after fervently listening to their recordings in undergraduate school (and still to this day!), that I sat there in my own little world… to which Michelle must have noticed, and comically after answering questions on my behalf said, 'I don’t know why Jared is sitting there like he doesn’t have the answers!'

"To me, it is impossible to put into words the responsibility I feel to carry on Maestro Maazel’s legacy. The Castleton Festival is becoming a critical part of my career as an artist, and in my life. Each time Dietlinde steps on stage to receive her applause, I get goosebumps knowing that her success is mine. I am so thankful for her trust in me as her assistant. Also, for her trust in me as an artist carrying steadfast a piece of Maestro’s legacy.

"I have a ritual after every visit to the Festival, whether for a residency, a performance or simply to catch-up with Dietlinde and her family. I go to Maestro’s study and ‘thank’ him. Whether he hears me, I can’t say. All I know is that I have never been seen for who I am as a musician, teacher, administrator, and human quite like I have at his Castleton Festival, and so I am under his tutelage and eternal gratitude.”

Jared Alan Yoakem is a pianist from Grand Rapids, MI, who has recently been seen at the Castleton Festival as pianist and administrator for the Vocal Immersion Program, Judge Tatel “VISION”, and upcoming USC-Castleton Immersion Program. As a recitalist and collaborator, he is in demand at numerous universities and venues of the Southeast U.S. He has been awarded with the Dean’s Advisory Council Award for outstanding achievement in music from Belmont University in 2019.

He will attend the University of Maryland - College Park in Fall 2024 to begin coursework in the DMA Piano Performance program under instruction of Dr. Mayron Tsong. Prior degrees are from Belmont University & East Carolina University, where he worked with Elena Bennett and Kwan Yi. He has attended the Collaborative Piano Institute at Louisiana State University, the Leon Fleisher Academy, and Vivace Music Foundation. He has participated in masterclasses by Stanislav Ioudenitch, Julian Martin, Anne-Marie McDermott, and Robert McDonald.

Castleton Festival recently celebrated the release of the memoir, “VISION, A Memoir of Blindness and Justice”, written by United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit - America’s second highest court, where he served nearly 30 years on - and Rappahannock County community member Judge David S. Tatel.

We were delighted to host this terrific event in the Castleton Theatre House and Great Room, with Judge David S. Tatel, D.C. attorney Paul March Smith, and the young artists of the Denyce Graves Foundation and Castleton Festival.

If you haven’t read the book, we highly recommend it! His story of fighting for justice while working around and with his blindness is an inspiration for us all.

Dietlinde Turban Maazel’s background includes 44 years of working as performer and educator, as well as continued training in vocal performance, yoga, ayurvedic nutrition, and psychology (Expressive Arts Therapy, Psychodrama and Somatic Experiencing).

She began violin lessons at the age of 6 and was exposed to extensive chamber music experience in her teenage years. Ms. Maazel studied classical dance and voice at the Musikhochschule & Ballettakademie München, the Martha Graham Studio NY, and the Aspen Music Festival. Her theatre and music studies include Master Classes with Peter Brook, Lee Strasberg, the T. Schreiber Studio NYC, Prof. Gerhard Hetzel (Vienna), Dorothy Delay (Juilliard), and Ron Browning (Nashville).

Her first stage appearance at the age of 19 as Gretchen in Goethe’s Faust at Munich State Theatre brought her national fame. Thanks to scores of films and TV plays, in 1983 Ms. Maazel won Germany’s coveted Bambi Award as Best Actress of the Year.

In 2009 Ms. Turban Maazel co-founded the Castleton Festival with her late husband, Maestro Lorin Maazel, where she taught at the “Castleton Artists Training Seminar” (CATS), the Festival’s Young Artist Program. After Lorin Maazel’s passing in 2014, she took over as Artistic Director and CEO. She now runs four ongoing series: Castleton in Residency, Castleton in Mentorship, Castleton in Conversation, and Castleton in Performance.

In 2013 Ms. Turban Maazel created the course "Acting for Singers" for Rutgers University where she taught for nine years. She regularly holds masterclasses nationwide and abroad, as guest faculty member of the International Vocal Arts Institute (IVAI - NYC and Montreal), the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt, the Atelier Lyrique de l'Opéra de Montréal, and Highland Opera Studios, Ontario.

Castleton Festival is blessed to have such a talented and experienced leader and artistic director, and the Vocal Immersion Program is an amazing opportunity to study and learn with an incredible line up of creative professionals such as Ms. Maazel!

Introducing Paul Groves, one of our three founders of the Vocal Immersion Program (ViP) at Castleton Festival!

One of the great American tenors of his generation, Paul Groves continues to enjoy an impressive international career performing on the stages of the world’s leading opera houses and most prestigious concert halls. In 2020 he returned to the Metropolitan Opera for his 27th season with the company in performances of Chekalinsky in The Queen of Spades and Tamino in The Magic Flute. A veteran of the concert stage, Groves appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for Stravinsky’s Persephone with Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Indianapolis Symphony for Bruckner’s Te Deum with Krzysztof Urbanski, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with Donald Runnicles.

Paul Groves came to national attention as a winner of the Met’s National Council Auditions in 1991. A graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Young Artists Development Program, Mr. Groves made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1992 as the Steuermann in Der fliegende Holländer. Mr. Groves returned to the MET for performances as Camille de Rosillon in their new production of The Merry Widow, opposite Placido Domingo and Frederica von Stade; Ferrando in a new production of Cosi fan tutte; Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress; Lysander in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail; Fenton; and Don Ottavio in a nationally televised season-opening performances of Don Giovanni opposite Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming. In 2006, he created the role of Jianli in the world premiere of Tan Dun’s The First Emperor, opposite Placido Domingo, and he returned to the MET in 2008 for further performances of this role. He made his debut at La Scala in 1995 as Tamino in the opening night performance of Die Zauberflöte, Riccardo Muti conducting, and he has returned in several roles, including Renaud in Gluck’s Armide and Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore– the first American tenor invited to La Scala for this role. Audiences in Paris have seen the tenor often since his debut in 1996 season when he appeared as Tom Rakewell at the Théâtre Musical de Paris, Châtelet in a new Sellers/Salonen production of The Rake’s Progress. Mr. Groves made his debut with the Opéra de Paris as Fenton in a new production of Falstaff, and he soon returned for performances as Tamino, Berlioz’s Faust, Nemorino, Julian in a new production of Charpentier’s Louise and his role debut as Mozart’s Idomeneo.

Paul is so amazing! ViP is a truly spectacular experience, learning from such phenomenal performers and teachers - Paul Groves, Michelle DeYoung, and Dietlinde Turban Maazel, plus guest teachers each year!

ViP applications are now open, until August 15! More information and application at https://www.castletonfestival.org/vocal-immersion-program/
