Tumi Shangwina is a boundary-pushing DJ and producer from Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa, known for his eclectic blend of house, techno, Afrobeat, Afro Pop, and electronic music.

His sound is deeply rooted in African rhythms, seamlessly fusing traditional and modern elements to create a vibrant, high-energy experience on the dancefloor. Tumi’s music reflects his passion for innovation, drawing from the rich diversity of African sounds while staying connected to the pulse of global electronic music. Don't miss a phenomenal performance at Awakening Social Sessions: Reclaiming Space of Ubuhle Development Foundation, hails from Phutanang, Kimberley.
Multi award winners through their unique traditional dance and music performance by vibrant young people that will leave the audience in wanting more. The group was seen staging recently at the 2024 miss teen pageant and scooped 2 awards at the 2024 Dance Pages hosted by the Mayibuye Dance Academy. Good morning Family
Allow me to introduce to you a creative genius and proud weirdo Letlhogonolo Nche who will be the Director of the Public Performance Pieces for Awakening Social Sessions: Reclaiming Space that will take place this coming Wednesday.

Letlhogonolo Nche is a South African dance teacher, choreographer, and producer . He is also a supporter of a doctoral study completion platform called CANVAS: Performing our PhDs!, which aims to bring together scholars, community members, students, and artists to share knowledge and skills . He is the ImpACT award winner for Dance and the 2 times Best Dance Teacher award winner for the National Statement Curriculum. His works have been around mental health, GBVF and healing.

Evening Family.
We are extremely grateful and honored to have Phila Phaliso entrust us with her body of work titled- (Ixhala Lika Nongayindoda) to form part of our Visual Art Exhibition at the Awakening Social Sessions: Reclaiming Space

Phila Phaliso born in South Africa in the Eastern Cape in a small Cofimvaba town, Magwala Village. She has been making art for 10 years. She has done drawing, printmaking, painting and ceramics. Ceramic and paint are the medium that she mainly uses. She is based in the Eastern cape, currently in Makhanda. Studied her Diploma and B.Tech Degree in fine art at the Walter Sisulu University. She then did her Honor’s in art history and Master’s in fine art at Rhodes University.
She wants her art to be informative, provocative, start discussions and travel all around the world. Her work is an on -going series of research on q***r theories and the representation of black women, q***r communities in contemporary South African art. She enjoys experimenting with different mediums, and a bigger scale when it comes to sculpture and Murals.
Her creative process is influenced by music or complete silence. She seeks inspiration from everyday social spaces, past and present experiences. In the near future she wants to be able to be a part of residencies learn from other artists and collaborate with them. Have solo exhibitions outside of academia, hopefully win an art competition or two and put her work on the map

Good morning Family. We are overwhelmed with joy to finally do work with the Great Mbizo Makandula who'll be presenting two powerful works at the Awakening Social Sessions: Reclaiming Space
Title for the photographic exhibition: Izwekufa
Title for Performance: Inhlambuluko.

Sikhumbuzo Makandula is a visual artist, lecturer in Fine Art
Photography, Rhodes University and arts writer based in Makhanda.
Makandula graduated with a Master of Arts in Public Spheres and
Public Culture from University of Cape Town. His practice base
research focuses on 19th Century history, Art History, Conservation of
Built Environment and Heritage Management. Makandula’s research
traces and interrogates the material culture of black intellectual history
and the knowledge systems embedded in iminombo, izibongo, iimbali
and iingoma. In 2016 he published a book Ubuzwe and in academic
journal, Arts of Africa and his art has been featured in publications
such as Acts of Transgression Contemporary Live Art in Southa Africa,
Exchanging Symbols: Monuments and Memorials in Post Apartheid
South Africa, Art Africa magazine, Africanah.org and Contemporary
And online magazine. As visual artist his solo exhibitions includes, In
Search of a Nation (2016), Ubuzwe (2017), Zizimase (2019) and his
work is part of public and private collection internationally.

Nkosenathi Ernie Koela () is an Healer and Ph.D candidate specialising in indigenous music therapies at the University of Cape Town. Koela’s Trans-disciplinary practice encompasses being an Afrikan indigenous Sound medium, Artist, Specialist and Teacher. Koela as an Instrument maker and multi-instrumentalist, explores how healing practices through sound, creates space that manifests spiritually and materially.

Sisonke Papu , also known as KHNYSA, is iGqirha or a traditional healer/ doctor, breathwork facilitator, and multi-disciplinary artist who integrates indigenous African wisdom with modern healing modalities. Specializing in the use of indigenous sound instruments to create transformative ceremonies and sound journeys that tap into the power of breath, spirit, and the vibrational frequencies of the cosmos. KHNYSA's work has been shared across various sacred spaces around the world, including South Africa, Kenya, Zanzibar, the UK, New York and Los Angeles, where he has offered his unique blend of breathwork and sound healing, rooted in African cosmology and traditional practices.
