The Wiz- a film that forever changed black culture. I wore this costume 13 years ago in the production of “The Wiz.” I’ve always been fascinated with the movie and the broadway musical, so when it came to this year’s theme; I followed my heart.

There is something so inspirational about the style, creative explosion, innovation and traditional African American nuances depicted in this black inspired production. It triggers a sense of belonging, pride and UNITY. The colors, the combination of fabulous costume patterns, the makeup, the hair, the musical dynamism, all combine to a fantastical African/Black take on this classic story.

Funny fact: 13 years ago, I auditioned for the Tin Man, but wasn’t cast for the part. Somehow, I ended up being the understudy for all the parts. Full circle, I was the yellow brick road then and now I am the flower, THE WIZ ; creating my own Emerald City. Keep the course and ease on down the road with me!

The MET Gala will take place tonight in NYC, and I cant wait to see all the art inspo & fashion!

The KDB Gala Experience was inspired/modeled after The MET, a night that celebrates the appreciation of art/fashion. I wanted to bring that vibe to my home state of Mississippi! We as creatives need to be celebrated and given notice, thats what the KDB Gala Experience will represent.
