Hello Everyone,

I hope this finds you all well. Things here have quietened down after the spring season.

I am sure some of you can all tell me your own version of the story, but, things are not really the same with the business since Covid. Please know that I am still here and still waving my flag that I am open for business as usual.

As a business I decided to change my strategy to refine the number of costumes I am storing by filtering out the items that have never been used (and may never be used).

When I talk to those of you who have your own wardrobe store, we all appear to have costumes we don’t want to get rid of and those which will never fit anybody – I've allocated some space in my own store where I am repurposing these garments into new costumes for the stage.

So, whilst it may be quieter with few costumes going out because of it being out of season, there is still lots to keep me busy.

If there is anything I can help you with in the future please get in touch.

Hello

Just when everything was going so well . . .

As you would expect the Studios in Slaithwaite were closed last week - in anticipation of this happening I had started to bring home what I could – namely my loom, yarn and all the necessary weaving accessories.

A couple of weeks ago I made a full width of the loom piece in a check design – as much as created striped pieces before this was my first attempt at a check. On Friday I warped the loom with the same check design but in a different colour variation – the original is brown where as the piece on the loom is blue.

I’m weaving this afternoon – I've managed to find a place in the house where I can work – as I’m sat I look straight out of the window at the rear of the house looking across the Colne Valley towards Blackmorfoot Reservoir and Holme Moss.

Here are a couple of images of the weaving I’m producing at the moment.

I am well and hope you are too

Hello

Thank you to everyone who liked last week’s post – I have some new costumes to make for this season’s shows so I’ll make a point of putting pictures on a future posts.

Last Summer I found a course being run just outside London that was “ make and take “ ( basically you make something that by the end of the course you can take home ). So I organised myself a train ticket, a couple of nights in a hotel and booked onto the course.

Loved it. Had a really good day – teacher who really knew her stuff, decent sized group so you could talk and find out about others on the course and see what they were doing without it being to large and intimidating.

Should tell – the course taught you HAND WEAVING !

Needless to say, I came home from London on the train with a loom tucked under my arm, and haven’t looked back since. I’ve been getting used to the process and working out how to set up and use my ASHFORD RIGGID HEDDLE LOOM. At the moment I’ve made a conscious decision to sticking with wool yarns for my warp and experiment with wool or linen yarns for my weft. Then there is colour to consider . . . mind blown

Here are a couple of samples I’ve been working on

Hello

Following on from last week about my moving into the workshop / studio I thought I’d show you a little of what I’ve been making.

The pink jacket was made last week for a play I’ve been asked to work on – it’s an 1860’s style fitted into the waist jacket with flared full length sleeve split to the dropped shoulder. It still needs its false sleeve putting in – though I am wondering if I should use a full blouse underneath the jacket instead. The skirt is tiered and worn over a medium sized hoop ( not too big – not Mrs Anna big lol ) I’ve copied the satin trim and bias binding from the jacket on to each tier of the skirt. I’m Please with it.

The striped skirt, bodice and jacket were made last Autumn for Miss Adelaide to wear in Calamity Jane ( back ground – she starts with her “ Harry I’m planning to Marry “ number then moves straight into her dressing room to put on a travelling suit to leave for Europe ). The design of the costume needed to cover all her different needs in one: she wore the bodice with a swag front skirt – added the full length skirt then added the jacket and matching hat for the final exit. It worked well and gave the impression of costume changes with the minimum of actual full change.

The studio is such a good space to working that I can just relax with everything around me and enjoy my sewing again.

Watch out for next weeks posting . . .

Hello

I am sorry that I have not posted anything for a while . . .

At the end of last Summer I relocated my work shop from Halifax to Slaithwaite in Huddersfield. At Globe Arts ( in Slaithwaite ) there are a number of Studios occupied by artists working in different types of media and I have taken one of these Studios.

As I am sure you can imagine it took me a couple of weeks to move everything over and then a month or so to get it all in to the right place so I can easily put my hand on something when I need it but it is now functioning very well. I feel very much at home.

Being part of a small friendly community where there is a palpable and creative energy about the place resulting in a very productive environment is proving to be really good for me. Long may it continue.

( The costumes are still stored at Holmfield Mills in Halifax so if you need to come and look at the costumes you will need to come there. )

Hello Again
A few weeks back I went down to the Lamproom Theatre, Barnsley to meet the cast for the 2017 pantomime - Sleeping Beauty. We needed to do the photo shoot for the poster and to get a set of photos for other publicity opportunities.
It was a fun day !
So here it is, the poster for this year.

Hello everyone.
A couple of weekends ago it was the NODA Conference in Bridlington. Thank you to those who came over to say Hello ( and pick up one of the new flyers ) - it was brilliant to see you - I hope you had a good weekend.
Here are a couple of photographs of the stand.

Here are a couple of images of the new costumes that have just been made for next week’s production of ‘ Kiss Me Kate ‘. Making the Shakespearian costumes has been a creative challenge – I’ve really enjoyed it this last couple of weeks getting artistic with a look completely different to the norm.

Hello Everyone

As busy as the season is this year I've decided to go to the NODA Conference in Bridlington and take my new flyers with my (so watch out you'll all be walking away with one!)

I'm heading to Bridlington on the Thursday and having a day of rest over there before the weekend starts. I'm going to the diner on the Friday night – then it's an early start on the Saturday morning to set up the my Trader's Stand to be ready for when the conference opens.

I'll be there all morning and well into the afternoon but will have to leave after the AGM to travel down to Kettering to collect Thoroughly Modern Millie that finishes its run that night.

I'll be travelling back to Bridlington (from home) on Sunday morning to be there for when the conference re-convenes, to listen to the speaker before taking down the Stand and heading home.

It would be great to see you all if you're there for the weekend – please come over and say hello! I hope to see you.

Kind regards
Ian

Hello Everyone

There have been a couple of changes recently that have made my existing flyers obsolete.

Together with my Artistic Consultant (my very good friend Alec Gladok) we have looked at creating a new, fresh, clean image for the business - whilst still retaining elements of the original artwork associated with the business.

The major result is a new flyer.

We have then replicated the new format images through the page Cover and Profile pictures.

I hope you like the changes?

Kind regards
Ian

Hello Everyone

I hope this update finds you all well.

As some of you will know already, I have moved out of my house in Elland and for the business have taken on an additional unit for the workshop. This is now the official address for any business correspondence.

The address is Unit 10a Calderdale Business Park, Club Lane, Halifax HX2 8DB

The unit, unfortunately, does not have a telephone so the number to use to speak to me is 07811196255 – all I would ask is that you only use this number in business working hours, Thank you

Kind regards
Ian

NEW FOR 2015

I’ve been asked by a couple of societies to create a new set of costumes for Barry Manilow’s Copacabana. So, it’s out with the lycra, feathers and diamanté. We’re up to our ears in the work shop making new show girl costumes with blue and white feather bustles and to complete the look a wire headdress with 22” feathers. ( I have not even started on the “ Flamenco “ costumes or the Pirates – one thing at a time. )

So, if you know of any society that is thinking about putting on Copacabana, please let them know that I have a new set of costumes for hire.

Hello Everyone,

I've been asked to make new costumes for Addams Family - as its been a while since we have made a new show from scratch I thought it was time to add a new set of costumes into stock and this sounds like a show to add. It will give me lots of opportunity to run riot with designs and periods whilst at the same time having to made specific iconic costumes.

If you know of anyone who is doing the show please let them know that I have the set of costumes.
Many thanks
Ian
