My name is Mxolisi Mbatha and I am DJ MXO. Born in Tembisa, I grew up in a family that loves music. It was one of those families where every weekend there would be a speaker outside playing music, and we would be sitting outside watching people carry on with their lives while listening to the sounds. In 1997, when YFM was launched was when I started hearing this thing called: “HOUSE MUSIC.” I listened to the station every day with no fail, because when it started there were no presenters, it was only music and it was mixed genres such as RnB, Kwaito and House. I followed the station and they slowly started getting DJ presenters. There were guest DJ’s coming in and we heard different tracks every day.
BOOOM it hit me; I was hooked. I fell in love with house music and I never looked back. In 1998 I bought my first cassette with my lunch money; FRESH HOUSE FLAVA VOL 1, it was a house compilation featuring various artists from overseas. The cassette was compiled by DJ Fresh; I think it was the first house compilation to hit the streets. I heard the tracks played on YFm day in day out and I just loved this music more and more with each breaking day. When I got my cassette I listened to it every day, un till one day my radio snapped my cassette and there it lay, broken. That was the worst day of my life and I didn’t have enough money to buy another cassette. The other guys “my friends” never liked the sound any way so I had no choice but to record all the tracks straight from the radio. I would record all the DJ’s sets on all the shows; DJ Fresh, Khabzela, Rude boy, Paul and Oscar. In a nut shell, the radio became my friend(s) and music became my religion.
Hooked on the base, I started saving money to go to events where these Top DJ’s performed. I still remember the first time I saw DJ Khabzela, it was in Vosloorus and they had a beauty contest. He was the judge and a guest DJ that night. I will never forget that evening, because I had no one to go with and I didn’t let that stop me. I went alone and I had fun, feeling that I was where I was meant to be. I just wanted to see how they do it and how they get to mix these songs. It fascinated me how it was possible to mix two songs and let them play as one song. There I was, in the front row watching them mix. it was DJ Khabzela and Dj Monde; I wasn’t even dancing that night just watching my heroes DJ.
As my love for House Music grew stronger and stronger, I wanted to be on Radio to also play these great sounds for all the people like me. People with passion and drive. I soon learned the skill of mixing and because it came so naturally to me, I felt as though this was my destiny. So I started going to all the community radio station looking for a Radio job as a Radio presenter and/or DJ. I went to Tembisa community radio and there was no luck so I decided to go to Khaya FM. I knew I was jumping the gun, hoping to present on a professional Radio station and run before I could crawl, so needless to say I didn’t come right. However, I met a lady who guided me, and so I went back on my journey again troubling all the community radio stations, hoping for a lucky break. Finally, I came right with KASIE FM! It is a community radio station in Katlehong I have been working with them since November 2014 and I also started Djing at Clubs and Events.
