This morning I woke up and realized it’s been two whole years since we threw an M&D (re)launch party and I officially started doing this thing full-time.
I’m too wrapped up in wedding season to go full sap on ya like I usually do, but damn am I lucky that I still get to flower for y’all every day.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about putting in your 10,000 hours. About what would’ve happened if I’d quit. About how lost the art of practice is, and how lucky I was to learn that skill as a young musician. I still don’t think I’ve fully mastered my craft, but I’m starting to sense my growth. I can’t wait to see what my work looks like in another 2 years.
Here’s to putting one foot in front of the other, and never letting perfect be the enemy of good.
Thank you all for your support over the years. It means the world.

My tattoos give "personal branding" a whole new meaning...
The iris on my arm is an homage to Dot, who grew irises in her St. Louis home garden for years. When she and Grandpa Russ moved to Chicago to be closer to our family, we uprooted the bulbs and they now bloom beautifully every year in Mertle's garden.
Red poppies are Mertle's favorite flower, despite being haunted by the Wizard of Oz as a child. She was especially lucky to enjoy endless fields full of poppies on a recent trip to Italy.

10/10 would recommend: working with .co, and .e.barker to build this gorgeous chuppah. Best team ever!
1/10 would not recommend: holding your breath for five minutes as we moved the chuppah off of a raised stage and down to the reception space. 🥵
Jokes aside, this was such a fun day all around, especially because we got to work with our fave, of ! Looking forward to the next one.

How would I design my own wedding? Well, maybe a little something like this.
Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of partnering with , of , and to dream up an inclusive wedding scene that reflects the celebrations we wish we'd see more in the media.
Incorporating Jewish motifs and a q***r couple, my goal in designing this photo shoot was to communicate that all are welcome at the table. A rich tapestry of mixed florals, fruits and vegetables symbolize abundance: in the traditions celebrated, the new lives started, and the diverse but united community that joins together to celebrate the newlyweds.
Bountifully arranged baskets pour over the chuppah, showering the couple with love as they start their lives together—while a cornucopia of botanicals invite guests to the dining table.
Pomegranates hold a special significance in Judaism, often associated with righteousness, knowledge and wisdom. The integration of these symbolic fruits into the floral arrangements and decor elements, alongside textural and elegant blooms in shades of eggplant, mauve, and blush, creates a harmonious blend of tradition and modern aesthetics.

It might come as a surprise, but in many ways I prefer working funerals over weddings.
Why? Well, for one thing, the funeral industry is ripe for reinvention — starting with flowers. When did we decide that memorial flowers should be as boring as possible, use the cheapest product imaginable, and include tacky ribbons with cheesy gold writing on them? When I die, please bury me in the most colorful, unexpected blooms you can find.
But more importantly, florists have a much bigger opportunity for impact during a funeral.
When I get a phone call asking for memorial flowers, my first job isn't to ask "what colors would you like?" or "where do you want them delivered?" It's to sit with a customer in their grief, and offer a sympathetic ear when they need it most. It's to offer long-term payment plans that alleviate the stress of funeral expenses. It's to create the gentlest experience possible during an accutely painful time.
It's a skill I've learned through 's powerful example, and it's one I don't take lightly. Remembering a life through flowers is one of the most bittersweet but beautiful experiences I've had as a florist, and it's an honor when you trust me to do it.

I'm coming for you, ...
I was so thrilled to work with a few weeks ago to shoot some new photography for the M&D website. Not only did she make me feel like I was on a magazine shoot, but she incorporated so many personal details and family heirlooms — from my grandpa's clock and pocket knife to antiques that has collected for me over the years.

We're all tired of seeing those posts that start with "There are a lot of new people around here, so I figured I should reintroduce myself!"
But...there *are* a lot of new people around here, so I hope doesn't mind that I invited Corporate Erin to step in for this one. Here's what she had to say:
"Thanks for hopping on a call so that I can introduce you to my boss, Alex Onion. I know we still have a few people trickling in, but I really just wanted to kick things off by telling you more about Alex quickly so that we can all end before our hard stop at 2PM.
First off, I just want to say that Alex is a great boss. She pretty much never stops thinking about her business and she makes us work long hours, but she buys us like once a week to make up for it. She also lets us listen to and during the workday, which really helps with office morale.
I also have the bandwidth to manage her personal schedule, so I'm always kind of making sure her agenda is jam packed with rehearsals, concerts around Chicago, craft classes and dinner parties with friends.
Her car is really not up to my personal standards, but we're going to address how to keep things cleaner during our Q2 performance review. I also personally think she spends too much money on redecorating her house instead of buying a new car, but that's none of my business.
