Dad a proud member

Tonight is the seventh night of Hanukkah and we’re celebrating the value of courage (מוטיקײט).
During the Uprising of the 20,000 in 1909, young Yiddish-speaking and Italian-speaking immigrant women went on strike against garment factories that were exploiting them. They faced fierce and, in some instances, violent opposition from factory owners who hired thugs, with police support, to attack them. The courts consigned some of those arrested to the workhouse. Nonetheless, they stood fast, refusing to relent from their demands and ultimately winning health, safety, and wage improvements in 80% of the factories and inspiring workers around the world. Founders of the Workers Circle were at the heart of this uprising and its victory. We salute their courage and allow it to strengthen our resolve for this moment in history.

Heinrich Isaac (ca. 1450-1517) - Flemish composer of the Renaissance, known as Arrigo il Tedesco, also Ysaac, Ysaak, Henricus, Arrigo d'Ugo, came from Flanders but spent most of his life in Italy. He served, among others, at the Medici court in Florence, in the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, and from 1497 he was the first composer at the court of Emperor Maximilian I Habsburg (1459-1519) in Vienna.
Heinrich Isaac left behind, among others: approximately 50 cycles of ordinarium and almost 100 cycles of propria. He had a huge impact on the development of music in Germany.

Cut Circle at the Italian Academy & St. Paul’s
Two locations for a two-part concert.
Acclaimed vocal ensemble Cut Circle will start the evening with 16th-century secular songs in the Italian Academy’s Teatro. Then, during intermission, the audience and performers will cross Amsterdam Avenue to St. Paul’s, where Josquin’s sacred works will complete the program. Both venues boast excellent acoustics for a ca****la music, and this is a fantastic chance to hear a first-rate ensemble perform some of the best music of the Renaissance.

Wednesday at 7pm (in person only)

An important note about the Cut Circle concert
This concert will be spread across two locations. The first half will take place at Columbia’s Italian Academy (1161 Amsterdam Avenue), right across Amsterdam Avenue from St. Paul’s. At intermission, the performers and audience will walk across the street to St. Paul’s, where the second half, consisting of Josquin’s sacred music, will take place. The walk takes about one minute.

The Italian Academy theater is quite a bit smaller than St. Paul’s, and it’s possible that not everyone will fit. Registration for the first half is now closed, but we will take walk-ins starting at 6:50pm, if there’s room.

St. Paul’s has plenty of seats, so no registration is needed for the second half of the concert. If you can’t get into the Italian Academy for the first half of the concert, you’re welcome to wait in St. Paul’s for the second half to begin (around 8pm).

Ariadne Greif & Benjamin Katz: Madonna’s Tears
Soprano Ariadne Greif and harpsichordist Benjamin Katz, two brilliant interpreters of Baroque music, have prepared a fascinating program, consisting of sacred 17th-century music on the subject of the Virgin Mary. The program features music by Monteverdi, Tarquinio Merula, and other composers who deeply explored human emotion. This concert is the first time our new harpsichord will be played in public, so please join us to hear the excellent new instrument.

Thursday at 6pm, at St. Paul’s Chapel and on YouTube

Chamber music from Juilliard: Reinecke & David Maslanka
Every semester, we are delighted to present two chamber concerts by students from the Juilliard school. These concerts are always among our most popular, surely owing to the exciting virtuosity of these young players, many of whom are likely to be among the best musicians of the next generation.

Tonight’s features fantastic chamber works: Carl Reinecke’s Trio for Piano, Oboe, and Horn (1887), and David Maslanka’s third Quintet for Winds. Maslanka, who died in 2017, was a major American composer, and some of his wind pieces have become rightly popular.

Tonight at 6pm, live at St. Paul’s Chapel and streaming on YouTube.
