Why are cakes so expensive?
So lately I have seen a lot of people asking about custom cakes but wanting them as cheap as possible. In the current climate, cash is tight and I totally understand that people are watching their spending. But good things are not cheap and cheap things are not good.
To many people looking at a small cake with a couple of fondant decorations on it, they will instantly compair it to a supermarket cake that can be purchased for around £10.
But when you ask a baker to do it, there are a lot of things to consider that have to be added to the price quoted.
Cost of ingredients, board and box, electric or gas usage for baking, an hourly wage for work, fuel costs for delivery....
So a simple cake that takes 3 hours to make (£10 per hour as a wage) plus ingredients and everything else, with a base price of £50 can not compete with a £10 supermarket cake.
But you do get something fresh, with no added preservatives or extras, fully custom made and unique.
Plus you are supporting a small business, someone who does a happy dance every time they get an order and tries their very best to ensure you receive the best possible cake 🥰 you wouldn't work for £2 an hour, so why should a baker??
Thank you for reading my slight rant lol 🤣 hope you think about this the next time you want a cake 🥰🥰
