Instrumentation alone sets this Toronto-based trio’s Americana sound apart - simply fiddle (John Showman), banjo (Chris Coole), and bass (Max Malone). The spine-tingling harmonies and interchanging lead vocals only bring more magic. They’re releasing their fifth album, a feisty all-original collection (Try To Make It Fly Oct 2023) and touring it to Canada, the US and Europe.
Blackstrap Bluegrass is an acoustic quartet that has called central Oregon home for nearly 25 years. Armed with the 5 String Banjo, Mandolin, Flat picking Guitar and upright bass, their original tunes tell some great local and regional tales while providing new takes on the familiar sounds of Bluegrass, Contemporary Americana, and good ol rock and roll. The band has recently released their 3rd CD entitled Songs to Remember, and continues the tradition of creating songs that reflect stories and music familiar to many.

Indie folk singer/songwriter Haley Heynderickx draws from a wide array of influences, citing her religious Filipino-American upbringing, the folk music of the 1960s and ’70s, jazz radio, and the idiosyncratic acoustic guitar styles of Leo Kottke and John Fahey. All of those ingredients find their way into her music, which pairs deft fingerpicking with lyrics that flirt with levity but hew toward introspection. Her first album I Need to Start a Garden saw release in 2018. Following years of heavy touring, Heynderickx has new music coming this year.
Nick Delffs is not a protest singer. He’s not a gospel singer. Still, subversiveness and spirituality permeate Transitional Phase, his long-awaited second solo album. The product of five years of musical and personal growth that coincided with widespread social upheaval and a global pandemic – just as Delffs navigated first-time fatherhood, losing friends, and approaching his 40s; all weaved these songs.
Now Boise-based, Nick Delffs has been a beloved staple of Pacific Northwest music since emerging with his Portland-based band The Shaky Hands in the mid-2000s. It was clear then, as it is now, that he possessed an authentic—maybe ancient—voice. Transitional Phase is some of his finest and most vulnerable work. As the title suggests, it’s an album about opening oneself up to change, refusing the calcification that comes with age, and opting for wholesale transformation instead.

Kalos is made up of three innovative interpreters and composers of Celtic roots music: Eric McDonald, Ryan McKasson and Jeremiah McLane. They are masters of tradition who purposefully explore the dark corners floating on its edges, delivering an alluring musical complexity full of spontaneity and joyful exuberance. They set the standard for traditional repertoire with an underlying drive and pulse charged with rhythmic electricity and integrity, forging a new musical path that draws on Celtic, Breton, American and other musical traditions on accordion, guitar, fiddle, and vocals. The title of their new album, Headland, which refers to a point where land meets sea, is a fitting analogy for the exploratory space Kalos inhabits — one that calls forth driving, heartfelt music journeying through unknown territory to seek and find its essence – the enduring, resilient experience of the human heart.

Leo Moon (of Blitzen Trapper) and Johnny Bourbon will be playing at The Commons in Bend, OR. This will be an intimate listening room style show. Seating is limited. Tickets are available at bendticket.com .bourbon
Leo Moon is the solo incarnation of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Brian Adrian Koch.
California born and Oregon raised, Brian has been active in the Portland music scene since arriving in 2000. He is a current and founding member of indie rock band Blitzen Trapper (2000-present) and psychedelic folk duo Dead Lee (2018-2023) Appearing now as a solo acoustic performer, his minimal and haunting tunes are stripped down paeans to the glorious absurdities of life; harmonica spattered psalms to the void.
Johnny Bourbon is a singer-songwriter born in Bend Oregon in 1989.
He grew up in various locations throughout the Pacific Northwest and honed his skills writing and performing in various bands since his early teenage years.
He challenges himself to provoke honesty in his songwriting; examining the human condition and the subjects of love & loss, life and death, optimism and strife, and shares his personal history and the inner dialogues that follow with his audience, challenging them to ask themselves similar questions and confront their own humanness amidst the backdrop of driving alternative-country and folk guitar rhythms.
Johnny’s performance can somewhat be described as an act of emotional purging and tends to fill a room with a sense of heavy catharsis while still evoking a sense of levity, and sometimes laughter as he shares the stories most dear to him.
