Jean Rohe (ROW) writes one-of-a-kind narrative songs, concerned as much with the interior lives of her narrators as with the sociopolitical forces that shape them. She is best known for "National Anthem: Arise! Arise!" an aspirational alternative national anthem which spread via word-of-mouth and has now been performed hundreds of times by artists and choirs across the US. She won the Kerrville New Folk songwriting contest in 2022, and her long list of awards is a testament to the breadth of her vision, spanning prizes in roots music, song craft, lyric writing, theater arts, social-justice work, jazz performance, and arts education.

"Not only does she make astoundingly beautiful music but she is thoughtful, reflective, and courageous." - No Depression

With a pure and agile voice reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Midwest-based artist Sadie Gustafson-Zook's melodies balance witty lyrics and intricate guitar playing to create honest and relatable music. Sadie's writing tackles internal and taboo subjects while holding the audience with warmth and levity. She has also won the Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk contest and earned second place at the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest's Songwriter Showcase.

"She uses her voice with the precision of an instrument, leaping between registers and outlining jazz chords, all with grace and ease, never in a showy manner." - No Depression

David Francey is a Scottish born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter, who has become one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers (Toronto Star). For decades he worked across Canada in rail yards, construction sites, and the Yukon bush. In his 40’s, encouraged by his wife to share his songs and sing in public, his 1999 recording debut, “Torn Screen Door” contained much of his experiences in that working class life. It was an immediate success.

He has since won the coveted Canadian Juno Award in the Roots and Traditional category 4 times and released 13 CDs. He has also won the Grand Prize in the folk category of the John Lennon Song Writing Awards. His songs have been covered by many well-known artists; such as Mollie O’Brien, Del McCoury, and James Keelaghan

Rupert Wates is English but has been called “a prime figure in American music” (acousticmusic.com). A full-time musician since the 90’s, he came to the US in 2006 after a 5-year stint in Paris, which included his own jazz group. He now splits his time, when not on the road playing (120 performances a year), between NY City and Colorado

Rupert’s music is folk with jazz and cabaret influences. All of his many CDs have received very positive reviews. The quality of his writing is clearly demonstrated by the fact that many other performers cover his material (20 in 2016 alone), including two tribute CDs devoted entirely to his songs. He has twice been voted “artist of the year” by the International House Concert network (concertsinyourhome.com), and has won over 40 songwriting and performing awards
“Narrative storytelling is superb – even by the highest folk music standards”…..Orlando Sentinel

Santa Cruz “Queen of Steel”, Patti Maxine, won her first steel championship nearly 70 years ago! She is a major force in Western Swing, Hawaiian, and Americana music. She is also no slouch on guitar and as a vocalist. She is always in demand to accompany others from the young to “very seasoned”. Patti has played The Ugly Mug more times than anyone else, over a 15-year period. She is currently one third of Jazz The Dog. In this show Patti will perform a rare solo set.

Rupert and Patti split a bill in the series several years ago (pre pandemic), which was sold out.

Growing up in Boston Massachusetts, Peter Janson listened to his father, an accomplished amateur guitarist, play solo guitar every day. Peter started playing by the age of seven, and started doing pop gigs at age 15. For the last twenty-five years he has performed in venues large and small in a variety of styles; pop, rock, fusion, folk, Celtic, classical, and jazz. His sound is a melding of all these. Come and hear Peter, performing solo jazz guitar songs inspired by guitar legends like Joe Pass, and Earl Klugh.

Adam Traum. “Music is in Adam Traum's blood. His father, Happy Traum, was a Greenwich Village folk music icon, who recorded with Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan. The younger Traum is a chip off the old block, yet he definitely puts his own stamp on roots music. The vocalist-guitarist's mix of folk, country, rockabilly and blues has made him one of the more intriguing entertainers on the Americana scene.”

Adam now lives in Healdsburg, CA

Join Zoë Aqua (violin), Dmitri Gaskin (accordion) and Raffi Boden (cello) for an evening of traditional village music from three unique Eastern European Cultures: Transylvanian, Polish, and Ashkenazic Jewish. The three musicians have devoted their careers to mastering the music of these cultures. We will travel on a journey from village to village across the Carpathian Mountains, hearing the music each region has to offer, and also feature a number of the group's original compositions in these styles

Zoë Aqua (violin) recently completed a 2-year stint in Cluj, Romania on a Fulbright studying Transylvanian folk music. While there she recorded the album "In Vald Arayn"- new compositions inspired by traditional music, developed in collaboration with Romanian and Hungarian musicians.

Dmitri Gaskin (accordion) performs around the world with Yiddish singer Anthony Russell in the duo "Tsvey Brider," most recently in a program of Black and Jewish music with the Louisville Orchestra. Tsvey Brider released their album Kosmopolitn in 2022.

Raffi Boden (cello) combines his instrumental fluency with a reverence for folk traditions. Since graduating from Juilliard, Raffi has performed in ensembles from experimental chamber trios to raucous klezmer big bands in venues ranging from intimate neighborhood haunts to Carnegie Hall.

Modern folk musicians Paul Kamm and Eleanore MacDonald, from Nevada City, CA., have been writing and performing original, contemporary folk music for 41 years. Their music is graced by exquisite harmony, compelling songwriting, deceptively simple arrangements and intricate guitar work.

They are Kerrville, Telluride and Rocky Mtn New Folk award winners. Their songs are filled with stories that touch us all, and whether it’s love or politics, war and peace, old farmers, old women or the earth and our children, this music brings to life both history and today with a powerful mix of inclusion and compassion.

At home in large venues like the Strawberry, Kerrville or Kate Wolf music festivals, a late night ‘in the round’ tribute to Woody Guthrie with folks they greatly admire like Jackson Browne, Eliza Gilkyson, and Steve Earle or in the small intimate setting of a house concert, Paul and Eleanore sing with the same voice. One that is personal and unguarded.
Since 1987 Paul and Eleanore have independently produced 9 albums of original music, receiving critical acclaim from all of the various trade reviewers worldwide. They’ve been featured in Dirty Linen, Sing Out! Magazine, and Democracy Now!
Paul and Eleanore are soon to release album #10, Djuna’s Lullaby, their first recording since From the Fire, in 2010. http://www.kammmac.com
