What is a receiving line and when does it happen?
A receiving line happens right after the ceremony, where you and your partner (and sometimes your families) greet each guest as they exit. It’s sweet, intentional, and gives you the chance to say hello to everyone immediately.
But like everything in wedding planning, there are pros and cons.
Pros
• It’s tried and true, and many guests love the tradition
• You get to thank everyone right away before the celebration kicks off
• Excited guests get the chance to say hello and congratulations
Cons
• It can eat into your happy hour and the time your photographer needs for portraits
• It often creates a long pause in the flow of the day
• Skipping it allows you and your partner a few quiet minutes together — a small breather to let everything sink in before the party starts
There’s no right or wrong choice, just what feels best for your day and your priorities. I’m always here to help you weigh the options and craft a timeline that fits you.
