This week on THE SHAKE OUT: The riff John Lennon admitted he stole for the Beatles, Della Reese covers Neil Diamond, inclusive downriver country, a trip to the Caribbean, a number one hit on the R&B charts, a song Stevie gave away and another he took back, lots of soul 45s, plus some contenders for the perfect pop song, including one from Detroit’s the Waxwings. Dadgummit, how’s all this music fit in a two-hour show!?

This week on THE SHAKE OUT: The 1963 Detroit tune the Who pretended they wrote, and the song Angie Stone didn’t. A song with the word “Kokomo” in the title that isn’t that other one. A song about the prices of everyday items from 1955. The Triggers from Ann Arbor party like it’s 1999, because that’s when it was. Plus - lots of soul, a trip to Japan, an instrumental Brandy song, and much more - mostly 45s, always vinyl.

Next Saturday 4/12: For the third year in a row I’ll be playing records at the downtown Ann Arbor library at their pop up record fair on Record Store Day! Just like last year, I’ll be kicking off the event and will take the baton to close it out after a shared tag team transitional set in the middle.

Hamtramck launched its own radio station this week! Passenger Radio WHCK is now streaming live at www.passengerradio.com and there’s a great (and growing) roster of DJs involved

I’m doing a weekly two-hour show called THE SHAKE OUT, airing every Tuesday 4-6pm. That means the first episode airs TODAY! The show will showcase some of my all-time favorites and new finds, connect obscurities to the more familiar musical narratives, and provide an outlet for all this musical trivia in my brain. Mostly 45s, always vinyl - Hope you check it out!

Thanks to everyone who came through the Detroit Urban Craft Fair this past weekend and said nice things while I played records for 14 hours! I always see a flood of friendly faces at that event - it’s a whirlwind of positivity and then p**f it’s over.

Since quite a few people asked, I’ve posted the entire recording from the two days at djdavelawson.com/set.html . If you’ve never been (why not?!) the set is a mix of holiday rarities and upbeat soul/r&b songs with occasional diversions and oddball choices to wake everyone up when needed. I tried to edit out all the announcements about lost items etc, so hopefully I got them all. These are the only photos I took.

Thanks to for having me back year after year after year, to the helpful folks at the Masonic (one of whom jokingly said, “No one else is allowed to DJ this event! I’m putting it in the contract.”) and to all the vendors and shoppers who are always so supportive. Is there any other large hall where you can play Louis Armstrong reciting “The Night Before Christmas” over the Twin Peaks theme and be bombarded with praise? DUCF is a gem indeed!
