WITCH HEAD

Hidden within the dark depths of Orion, lies the appropriately named Witch Head Nebula.🧙

At 900 light years away, this faint patch of dust can be found close to Orion's brightest star, Rigel.

My plan was to amass around 8 hours of data, but the cloudy weather of late has been limiting, and I couldn't wait any longer to process what I had! 🙈

This image is a result of around 3.5hrs of 5 minutes exposures, but still captures the ghostly outline of the witch's face.🌌🔭

LITTLE BEEHIVE

Space is full of beauty. You just need to know where to look 🧐

Sirius, in Canis Major, is the brightest star in the night sky. But nestled very close to it lies the glistening oasis, Messier 41.🌌

The Little Beehive Cluster, as it is colloquially known, is a rich open cluster containing over 100 young stars. It is thought to be the faintest object ever spotted in classical antiquity, with records dating back to Aristotle in 325BC.

It is easy to spot with the naked eye as a glowing patch of light close to Sirius, and binocular views start to reveal its structure. Long exposure photography accentuates the vibrant colour of its members.

Try and spot this sparkling jewel of Canis Major next time you look up 🔭🔭

ORION'S BELT

Thanks to for lending us her 180mm lens to try some wider view astrophotography.

This photo was a result of only 6mins of data with a Sony A7RIII (12x30s) on a ZWO AM5 mount, but was still more than enough to capture the iconic Orion, Running Man, Flame and Horsehead nebulae.

The line of 3 bright stars to the left of the screen, are the belt stars of Orion, while the Orion Nebula on the right, marks the centre of Orion's sword, as seen with the naked eye.

I look forward to amassing more data to clean up the image, but I'm happy with the result. It's nice to give this incredible area of sky some perspective!

Another wonderful Night Sky Safari with wonderful guests 😍

We journeyed across the cosmos, discussing African starlore, and how the ancient Bushmen and other African tribes interpreted the night sky.

We revelled in the rings of Saturn, the cloud bands of Jupiter, glistening star clusters, ghostly nebulae, and discussed the inner workings of space and time 😱 🔭🔭

Everyone left with a feeling of wonder, awe and insignificance. And more importantly, a new appreciation and connection to nature and the night sky 🌌🌌

RED MIST

Here in the southern hemisphere, we are graced with some of the finest deep sky objects in the sky, none more so than the mighty Carina Nebula.

This fiery cauldron of star formation is visible to the naked eye as a glowing dust cloud nestled in the southern Milky Way, close to the Diamond Cross asterism.

Within its midst, lies Eta Carina, one of the most luminous stars in our galaxy, over 4 million times brighter than the Sun. Its energy can be seen in the white triangle of light next to the keyhole nebula, the gaseous surrounds reflecting its starlight.

Despite its brightness, it is only just visible to the naked eye, thanks to being 7500 light years away and enshrouded in hydrogen gas. It is one of the stars most likely to go supernova in the near future (astronomically speaking!)

This image represents one of my most challenging projects to date - a 12 panel mosaic, spanning 100s of light years, totalling around 6 hours of exposure.

The Pleiades star cluster, more commonly known as the 7 Sisters, sparkles high in the sky during the southern hemisphere summer. 🌌

It is probably the most culturally significant object in the night sky!
