Want your business to be the top-listed Event Planning Service?
My name is Patricia Durkin and I have been in the floral industry for 8 years and am currently a Wedding and Event Florist in the Norfolk and Oxford County area. I grew up in Norfolk County on a family run asparagus farm outside of Langton, “Spearit Farms”. I had always been interested in plants and trees, so after high school I decided to go to Niagara College to study horticulture. While at Niagara taking courses from Plant Science to Plant ID, I took an intro to Floral Design and became quite interested in the trade. I enjoyed it so much that after graduating from Niagara with a Horticulture Technician Diploma, I decided to go to Seneca College in Toronto for Floral Design. Thinking it was just going to be a backup career when I wasn’t doing horticulture, I fell in love with the trade and made it my full time career.
After Graduating from Seneca, I moved back home to the family farm and started working full-time at a retail floral shop in Tillsonburg - and was there for three years. Being young and needing some change, I took the chance and applied for a job at a high end floral design studio in Toronto - and got it!
So, I made the big move to Toronto and my floral design dreams came true working at Stemz. Stemz is one of the most prestigious floral design studios in the city. It is run by two of the most inspirational and influential women I have ever met. They both pushed me and taught me so many skills that I would have never been exposed to in small town. I worked at Stemz for four years, in that time I was introduced to many different job titles. I started managing their hardgoods warehouse (vases, candlelight, props etc), to buying the hardgoods, managing the floral production team, to buying all the florals for the company. While doing these rolls I made sure I took time to do the thing I moved to Toronto for - designing floral arrangements. I gained so much knowledge and design experience, I decided to “bring it home”.
In January of 2017 I moved back to Tillsonburg and started working part time in the Landscape Design industry at Oxford Insta-Shade Inc. I continued working as a freelance designer in Toronto at Stemz to top it off. I wanted to get back into working in the dirt with plants and learning some different skills in the landscape industry.
