âšÂ People pleasing and following traditions because you feel like you have to is OUT for us, because itâs YOUR day.
âšÂ Dramatic drapery and pops of colour are in, and traditional wedding cakes and basic flowers are OUT for us, because we want you to have some fun and try new things. Bring on the drama!

We suggest one year in advance, because if you have dream vendors in mind, they can get booked up pretty quickly. Itâs not to say that planning a wedding in under a year is impossible, but to execute your vision as best as possible, the more time the better.

Recently engaged? Here is Part 2 on where to start with your wedding planning process.
1. Start moodboarding. The first question I like to ask my clients is what do you want this day to FEEL like for you and your guests? Think about colours, textures, aesthetics that help emulate that. Moodboards are helpful to ensure you and I are speaking the same language (some people call it a cruiser table others call it a cabana table, what is old money chic to you may bring up images and ideas of something different to me). It helps us get aligned on your vision from the start.
2. Start researching venues. Get a feel for whatâs out there, and what you like. Make sure to check their reviews, and make a list of your top 3-5 to go see in person.
3. Time to start building your vendor dream team. A lot of research will go into this phase of the planning process. It takes a village to pull off your special day, so you will want a trusted team of vendors and suppliers that you enjoy working with. You want to ensure all the right people in place to guarantee the most seamless execution of your vision, the logistics, and the timeline as possible.
As @ericairwinweddings always says â Do your research, and trust your planner. After all, we have allllll the tea.

Hello Ottawa!
To say my house was a party year round would be true, but also a huge understatement. Iâm the oldest of five kids, all of us born within six years of each other. Yep, thatâs right â Iâm 34 and the youngest is 28. No multiples either. From a young age, our parents instilled in us the idea that it is important to celebrate â I mean, as the oldest child, I got a birthday cake every month for a year on the 27th.
Birthday parties were no small feat â five different themes, groups of friends, orders to the âcake ladyâ asking (almost exclusively) for Disney princess and batman masterpieces, loot bags to the nines and every detail in between. Easter egg hunts lasted a couple hours but they were no joke â if we were spending the holiday in Florida visiting my grandparents, my parents lugged a suitcase full of enough chocolates for five kids along with them â I mean, they canât not bring the stuff that they get year after year from How Sweet It Is (which, unfortunately, is no longer around).
All of that to say that Iâm Amanda Julia and I truly believe that a childhood spent celebrating ALL OF THE THINGS, always with the perfect ingredients to ensure a stellar party, has led me to where I am today â officially launching my very own event planning business, amanda julia events.
Iâve worked in the event industry for over a decade and have truly fallen in love with the processes within it. I have plenty of experience managing large national events including at the National Arts Centre Foundation, the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, and in the Office of the Leader of the Opposition. I also led the planning of over 25 events at one of the most successful Grey Cup Festivalâs in the CFLâs history.
Iâm creative, passionate, and want nothing more than to see my clientsâ vision come to life. Itâs important to me to make my clients feel heard, seen, and understood. There is nothing more rewarding than putting in all the work behind the scenes to finally watch it play out â right there in front of your own eyes! I love nothing more than watching every single detail fall into place, looking at peopleâs faces and reactions as they walk into the event space, and asking them when they leave how they enjoyed their time at the event. My goal with amanda julia events is to plan and curate events that make you (as the client, as the guest, as the whatever role you want to play) feel something â because an exceptional and memorable event should do just that.
