Not sure about you, but we love seeing these. Remember that this is all personal preference and since it’s your day, anything goes!

✹ We’re loving candid photos over posed, as they capture true moments.
✹ People pleasing and following traditions because you feel like you have to is OUT for us, because it’s YOUR day.
✹ Dramatic drapery and pops of colour are in, and traditional wedding cakes and basic flowers are OUT for us, because we want you to have some fun and try new things. Bring on the drama!
✹ And as we’ve mentioned before, wedding favours are OUT for us because far too often guests leave them behind, and this could save some of your budget (or go towards something else for your dream wedding).

If you’re a recently engaged couple and thinking about when to have your wedding, we always suggest starting your planning at least one year in advance
 but don’t panic if that isn’t your timeline! As we said, we’ve done it in less — we got you! đŸ€ We suggest one year in advance, because if you have dream vendors in mind, they can get booked up pretty quickly. It’s not to say that planning a wedding in under a year is impossible, but to execute your vision as best as possible, the more time the better. Recently engaged? Here is Part 2 on where to start with your wedding planning process. 1. Start moodboarding. The first question I like to ask my clients is what do you want this day to FEEL like for you and your guests? Think about colours, textures, aesthetics that help emulate that. Moodboards are helpful to ensure you and I are speaking the same language (some people call it a cruiser table others call it a cabana table, what is old money chic to you may bring up images and ideas of something different to me). It helps us get aligned on your vision from the start. 2. Start researching venues. Get a feel for what’s out there, and what you like. Make sure to check their reviews, and make a list of your top 3-5 to go see in person. 3. Time to start building your vendor dream team. A lot of research will go into this phase of the planning process. It takes a village to pull off your special day, so you will want a trusted team of vendors and suppliers that you enjoy working with. You want to ensure all the right people in place to guarantee the most seamless execution of your vision, the logistics, and the timeline as possible. Hello Ottawa!

To say my house was a party year round would be true, but also a huge understatement. I’m the oldest of five kids, all of us born within six years of each other. Yep, that’s right – I’m 34 and the youngest is 28. No multiples either. From a young age, our parents instilled in us the idea that it is important to celebrate – I mean, as the oldest child, I got a birthday cake every month for a year on the 27th.

Birthday parties were no small feat – five different themes, groups of friends, orders to the “cake lady” asking (almost exclusively) for Disney princess and batman masterpieces, loot bags to the nines and every detail in between. Easter egg hunts lasted a couple hours but they were no joke – if we were spending the holiday in Florida visiting my grandparents, my parents lugged a suitcase full of enough chocolates for five kids along with them – I mean, they can’t not bring the stuff that they get year after year from How Sweet It Is (which, unfortunately, is no longer around).

But Christmas, Christmas is the holiday where my parents, especially my mom, really shone! It was a time for tradition, for decorating the tree together, for making sure we always had turtles on hand, for checking all of the lists (twice), and making sure no stone, whether it be gifts, décor, table settings, flowers, Christmas crackers, or of course, the wine, was left unturned. My mom worked hard to make sure all of us were smiling a little wider and a little more frequently than the rest of the year Santa (aka Mom, aka Cath), legit, never skipped a beat at our house. Christmas was and always will be the most special time of year for me. My extended family consists of over 25 people. The room was loud, full of love, lots of laughs, no empty chardonnay glasses, and always with some Frank Sinatra playing the background.

All of that to say that I’m Amanda Julia and I truly believe that a childhood spent celebrating ALL OF THE THINGS, always with the perfect ingredients to ensure a stellar party, has led me to where I am today – officially launching my very own event planning business, amanda julia events.
