Celebrating Excellence: A Look into the 2023 Fiji Sports Awards
The 2023 Fiji Sports Awards exemplified the dedication and triumph of Fijiâs sporting community, highlighting the outstanding performances of athletes, coaches, and officials. The Awards, held at the Vodafone Arena, were more than a celebrationâthey represented the heart and soul of Fiji's sporting development. With 96 nominees across 11 categories, this prestigious event once again affirmed the relentless pursuit of excellence in Fiji's sporting landscape.
Each category in the Fiji Sports Awards tells a unique story of hard work, perseverance, and success. For instance, the Fiji Water Coach of the Year award went to Simon Raiwalui, coach of the Fiji Rugby Unionâs Flying Fijians. Raiwaluiâs exceptional leadership, which led to victories at the Pacific Nations Cup and historic wins over England and Australia, made him a standout choice.
In the Sports World Technical Official of the Year category, Trisa Cheer Dunnâs accomplishments were nothing short of remarkable. From officiating at the Fukuoka World Championships to being named the âMost Outstanding Technical Officialâ at the 17th Pacific Games, Dunn epitomized excellence.
Volunteers are the backbone of any sports organization, and the Lawhill Wines Volunteer of the Year award fittingly went to Astral Smith of Fiji Hockey Federation. Her tireless work across multiple roles, from administrative support to managing international team visits, showcased her dedication behind the scenes.
One of the most captivating awards of the evening was the FBC Sports Photograph of the Year, awarded to Jonacani Lalakobau of the Fiji Times for his striking image that captured the intensity and emotion of a boxing match.
These are but a few examples of the many accolades presented at the 2023 Fiji Sports Awards. Each category reflected the diversity of talent and contribution that drives the sporting spirit in Fiji. From Netball Fijiâs recognition as the Fiji Sports Council Sports Organization of the Year, with their forward-thinking strategies and commitment to governance, to the rising stars such as Anahira McCutcheon and Nehemiah Elder, who took home the Young Female Athlete and Young Male Athlete of the Year awards, respectively.
As the awards showcased the best of Fijian sport, it is important to acknowledge the crucial support of our partners. The Fiji Sports Awards would not be possible without the commitment of our Presenting Partners, including long-time supporters Asco Motors, Fiji Water, ONOC, Vodafone, and Sports World. We are especially delighted to welcome new partners like Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, Unit Trust of Fiji, and Lawhill Fiji, whose inclusion has strengthened our platform.
In the same spirit, the support of Supporting Partners has been instrumental in ensuring the success of this annual event. A heartfelt vinaka vakalevu to Coca Cola Euro Pacific Partners, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Star Printery, and The Fiji Times, whose continued support is invaluable. This year, we were also fortunate to welcome new partners, including Docle Sounds, Events Plus, Fiji Pine, HFC Bank, Kanu by Lance Seeto, Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Justice, Niurua Creative, and Yue Lai Hotel.
These partnerships are more than financial contributionsâthey are investments in the growth of sports in Fiji. The Fiji Sports Awards remain a powerful symbol of how collaboration between athletes, organizations, and sponsors can uplift Fijiâs sporting landscape to new heights.
As we look to the future, we take pride in the incredible athletes, officials, and volunteers whose dedication continues to inspire us all. Congratulations once again to all our winners and nomineesâyou represent the very best of Fiji. Letâs continue to push the boundaries of sporting excellence.
