In the footsteps of Austria’s great composers

It is commonly said that travel broadens the mind. This is especially true of musicians. The works of Mozart, Haydn, Liszt and Mahler would be unimaginable if their composers had not spent much of their lives travelling. In the greatest cities of Europe they not only captivated audiences with their music; they also found inspiration for many pieces.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was only six years old when he and his family embarked on what at the time was truly a “grand tour”. The Mozarts travelled through countless cities in Germany and Belgium on their way to Paris and London, where the child genius delighted listeners with his virtuosity as a pianist. Even if today Mozart’s works give the impression of being completely homogeneous, they in fact represent a conglomerate of influences and ideas from a wide variety of cultural regions. The great influence that Italy, for example, had on Mozart’s work is evident in his adoption of formal elements of Italian opera, as well as in his collaboration with the Venetian librettist Lorenzo da Ponte.

Even for a composer so tied to his roots as Joseph Haydn was, travel and European cultural exchange were vital to the continued development of his style. When Haydn, who spent nearly his entire adult life in the service of the Princes Esterházy, received an offer in 1791 to visit England and conduct his new symphonies there, he accepted immediately. His friend Mozart expressed concern that Haydn didn’t even speak English, but the latter replied, “My language is understood all over the world!” The four years spent in England supplied Haydn with a creative spark. The works he produced there would have been sufficient to fill other composers’ entire careers. The Austrian completed no fewer than 250 compositions in London, among them his opera L’anima del filosofo and the twelve so-called London Symphonies, which include the beloved Drumroll Symphony.

A composer with equally strong ties to his homeland, today’s province of Burgenland, was Franz Liszt, who preferred to call himself Liszt Ferencz. Even as a child he was fascinated by the music he heard in Raiding, his hometown, played by the Hungarian Romani. He was particularly impressed that these musicians had an enormous repertoire of their own melodies as well as pieces by others and were not tied to printed music or rules of composition. Although Liszt left his homeland at the age of twelve, he remained true to his roots in terms of his music. As colourful and diverse as his life was also his music, reflecting the influences of Viennese Classicism, the cultural and political spirit of nineteenth-century Paris, the musical culture of Italy, Russia and Germany, and his distinctly Hungarian heritage. The result was a body of works that even today defies categorization.

No less cosmopolitan was Gustav Mahler, born into a Jewish family in Moravia. At an early age he was influenced by the many kinds of music that surrounded him, from Moravian folk music and the marches of the military bands to the coarse songs he heard at the surrounding taverns. Soon after completing his studies in Vienna he gained a reputation as a talented conductor, and he worked as musical director in Ljubljana, Kassel, Prague, Leipzig, Budapest and Hamburg before being named court music director in Vienna.

Today the influence of Austria’s great musicians can still be felt. This country has become a meeting place for music lovers from all over the world who come here to attend festivals and visit the places these famed composers lived and worked in order to better understand their sublime music.

GACTO festival tip - combine your next trip to Europe with the brand-new Montana Musica Festival in the Gastein Valley near Salzburg / Austria!

Dear friends of the music, dear friends of the mountains,

there is hardly another country where the sounds of music resonate with the sounds of nature as impressively and at the same time as romantically as in Austria.

After having successfully conducted our International Cantus MM Music& Culture in the city of Salzburg, it is about time for our society to redefine this singular union with a second festival.

MONTANA:MUSICA is the outcome of years and years of intense and affectionate work with musicians, singers and dancers from all over the world.
A spontaneous idea grew into a concept and the concept into a festival, an international festival of choral music in the natural surroundings of the alpine world of Salzburg.
We would like to invite you to this extraordinary experience, this powerful combination of music and nature. You and your choir can be part of a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of international voices.

'Music unites' – this slogan is more than just words, for music really unites people. It is not possible to imagine any culture, any nation without music. Music is communication, a link across borders, it is the expression of joy and sorrow. Only music can really express feelings and reach people, no matter how different or distant they are. Melodies go straight to the heart.

And now imagine you are looking up to the mountain tops of the Gastein Valley. From rustic Alpine
cabins music resounds that touches the soul and warms the heart, accompanied by the rushing of the crystal-clear water of the nearby mountain torrent and the low whistling of the fir trees when the autumn wind softly causes their boughs to dance.

That is MONTANA:MUSICA.

I am looking forward to welcoming you in the Gastein Valley.

Arthur Arh
President of the non-profit organization Chorus MM

Welcome to Scandinavia

Traveling through the Scandinavian countries is a once in a lifetime experience. Weather you choose to come in spring, summer, winter or fall, all the seasons have their individual charm. You can experience the midnight sun, or the aurora borealis in Scandinavia.

All Scandinavian countries have a rich cultural heritage and traditions that might make you raise your eyebrows. For example in Sweden we have an official holiday on Midsummers Day - just to celebrate the longest day of the year, and we eat fermented herring in August. Also, everybody knows that Santa Claus lives in Finland. But let us give you a quick tour of the countries here:

Denmark:
Denmark with its population of around 5 000 000 people is a country that has a culture similar to the northern European countries which are their neighbors in the south. Denmark attracts many tourists every year and it’s a country where you can enjoy both city life in Copenhagen, or the beautiful coastline in the countryside. In Copenhagen you can enjoy the Royal Danish Theatre´s Old Stage, The Royal Danish Opera House or the Royal Danish Playhouse, which is the national center for dramatic arts.

Denmark is also famous for The Royal Danish Academy of Music, representing the highest international level of music education and compares to and cooperates with a number of the foremost music academies in the world.

Sweden:
Sweden has the largest population of the Scandinavian countries with it´s 10 million inhabitants. The country stretches 1 572 km from the south to the north, which means that there are great differences in both nature and climate in southern Sweden compared to the north.

The capital, Stockholm is built upon 14 islands and is therefore sometimes referred to as ”Venice of the north”. In Stockholm you will find the Royal Opera House and the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Also about an hour outside of the city is Drottningholm Court Theatre, one of Europe´s finest 18th century theaters, which adjoins Drottningholms palace.

There is much more to see in Sweden apart from Stockholm. Traveling through the country you will enjoy beautiful nature, many friendly people and local traditions.

Norway:
Norway is famous for its fjords and dramatic lanscape with high mountains and low vallies. Population wise it is a fairy small country with just over 5 million people, but the people of Norway have been voted the happiest and most satisfied people in the world.

The west coast of Norway is where you find the fjords and traveling though the countryside by bus, train or boat is a breathtaking experience. Many cruises depart from Bergen (the birthplace of Edward Grieg) and travel up to the far north of Norway, where you can go on whale safari and experience real wildlife.

In the capital Oslo you will find a rich cultural life such as the new Opera House that opened in 2008. The Opera House has three stages and features both Operas and ballet performances. You will also find the National Theatre and a vide range of museums and art.

Finland:
Finland is know as ”the country of a 1000 lakes”. Like the rest of the Scandinavian countries Finland will show you a fantastic landscape. It has around 5 million inhabitants and two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. However only around 5 % of the population speak Swedish as their main language.

In Finland you can have many cultural experiences. The Finnish National Opera and Ballett was built in 1993 and there are performances six days a week, both opera and ballet. Following international practice, operas are generally performed in their original languages.
Helsinki also hosts The Sibelius Academy, a world renown performing arts university, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year.

One thing that has to be experiences while being in Finland is a real Finnish Sauna, where, if you get too hot, throw yourself into one of the 1000 lakes, regardless of the season.

Why to visit Slovenia

Slovenia sports an incredible natural diversity unmatched in many countries twice its size. It's the only European country which connects the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Karst, and the Pannonian Plain in manageable distances and has always been at the crossroads of Mediterranean, Germanic and Slavic cultures which have left their marks on the country today.
Powerful waterfalls, mighty peaks, picturesque landscapes, dreamy meadows, breath taking underground mysteries, sweeping vineyards, and lovely coastline are just some of the attractions enveloped into this tiny country which is almost exactly the size of Wales or Massachusetts.

Slovenia's capital and largest city also happens to be one of Europe's greenest and most liveable capitals. It is no coincidence that its name Ljubljana sounds like »the beloved one« in Slovenian. Indeed, the European Commission awarded Ljubljana with the coveted Green Capital of Europe title for 2016. Car traffic is restricted in the centre, leaving the leafy banks of the emerald-green Ljubljanica River, which flows through the city's heart, free for pedestrians and cyclists. Located in the heart of the city, one can find a stunning mediaeval castle overlooking both sides of the river where, the legend says, the Greek hero Jason defeated Ljubljana ‘s dragon.

Portorož and Piran, two beautiful towns are offering a truly authentic cultural composition of the Mediterranean flair, fascinating history and inspiring modernity.
From sailing in the Adriatic Sea and kayaking through the Fonda Fish Garden, to truffle hunting and wine tasting, exploring natural and cultural heritage of the Mediterranean region, or just relaxing in one of the spas along the coast. Everybody will find what he’s looking for.

Every corner of Slovenia seems to contain something magical, which also includes the Green Karst region which is kind of a micro cosmos within this nation. The Karst, a plateau in the southwest of Slovenia, is nestled between the Brkini Hills, the Gulf of Trieste, the Vipava Valley and Istria. It is the fatherland of three features: Teran wine, Karst prosciutto and gale wind. The Karst is distinguished by a harmonious combination of continental and mild sub-Mediterranean climate of the Northern Adriatic.
Furthermore, it is famous for its range of caves just waiting to be explored. Postojna Cave might be the most famous one, but it is the relatively unexplored Križna Cave with its underground lakes and galleries which will take your breath away. The Škocjan Caves remain the only monument in Slovenia on UNESCO’s list of natural and cultural world heritage sites.

Even serial visitors to Slovenia often stop and stare, mesmerised by the sheer beauty of this land. Let us show you why!

Japan’s hidden treasures

There are many beautiful places to visit in Japan all year round, many of which considered hidden treasures to first time travelers. The difficulty is choosing which place you want to go to the most. Some have a seasonal specialty like the cherry blossoms at Ueno Park or the Wisteria Tunnel at Kawachi Fuji Garden. These places are best to visit when they are in season, but there are other sights to see that are great no matter the time of the year. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto is a great photo spot and the stroll through the walking paths as a gentle wind sways the stalks is an experience that is indescribable. Even Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), which is also in Kyoto, is gorgeous to look at with its upper levels covered in gold leaf while the structure is being reflected in the pond.

Let us not forget about the top scenic spots in Japan like Matsushima Bay, which left the famed Japanese poet Matsuo Basho without words. Then there is also Miyajima at Itsukushima Shrine with its famous torii gate that look like it is floating on the water during high tide. In Hokkaido during the winter season in a town called Otaru is a festival called Otaru Snow Light Path. The locals make these lanterns out of snow and are light by candle light. The soft glow is to help you reflect on your life with a clear mind while forgetting your problems. Many places in Japan not only look phenomenal, but some invoke feelings of serenity. History lovers would enjoy going to Himeji Castle also known as White Heron Castle. It is one of the twelve original castles in Japan and is covered in white paint. In Matsumoto there is a castle known as Crow Castle because it is covered in black paint and is also one of the original twelve castles.

Besides Tokyo and Osaka, which are the largest most visited cities in Japan by travelers, the hidden gems in a rural town called Shirakawago where hundreds of years old Gassho (praying hands) farmhouses reside provide guests a traditional Japanese architectural experience. These homes are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and are illuminated during the winter time. The Kurashiki Canal Area is a beautiful example of the business conducted in the Edo Period when the canal was used to transport tons of rice. Former storehouses were converted into shops, museums, and restaurants along the canal. Even though there have been modifications to the area is still maintains the Edo Period look. Japan has too many places that are gorgeous and worth the trip. If you are looking beautiful then it would depend on your definition of the world. Nature, buildings, festivals, etc. can invoke the feeling of awe and it is up to you to decide on the most beautiful places in Japan.

Germany at a glance

Germany’s appeal is really no great mystery. Beside its vibrant cities, the wide-ranging countryside provides endless options as different as the Black Forest and the Baltic coast. But let’s look a little more deeply into why your travels in Germany will be filled with pleasures that go way beyond the spectacle of dirndls, lederhosen and Alpine meadows.

One can find corrugated, dune-fringed coasts in the north, moody forests, romantic river valleys and vast vineyards in the centre, and the off-the-charts magnificence of the Alps, carved into rugged glory by glaciers and the elements, in the south. The Germans more than anyone appreciate the comforting tonic of a hike in the Black Forest or a stroll on North Sea dunes, and just seeing these storied lands from a train window can be good for the soul. The cities are treasure-troves—not just of great art and history but of culture, sophisticated lifestyles, and, from ever-changing Berlin to old-world Baden-Baden, cutting-edge architecture.

Furthermore Germany is the birthplace of Martin Luther, Albert Einstein and Karl Marx, of Goethe, Beethoven, Bach and the Brothers Grimm who, each in their own way, have left their mark on human history. Its legacy is the exceptional choice of culture on offer in Germany today, from ancient to ultra-modern. There are around 300 theatres, 130 professional orchestras and 630 art museums with internationally acclaimed collections. You can stand in a Roman amphitheatre, sleep in a medieval castle and walk along remnants of the Berlin Wall – in Germany the past is very much present wherever you go.

The violin museum in Cremona

Italy boasts world-class excellence: in art, in gastronomy and even in music. The visit to the Violin Museum and the Cremona Lute Handmade Workshops represent a cultural path that we can not avoid, made of acoustic perfection, sublime notes : Those of the violins of the great Maestro Antonio Stradivari and of the other great Cremona violins makers .

Opened in 2013, the Violin Museum of Cremona opens a new and beautiful page that crowns the five centuries of Cremona's capital of violin making - a tradition incorporated into the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the grand and majestic headquarters of the Art Museum, the recent Violin Museum offers to visitors of all ages a unique sensory and cultural pathway to the world where instruments, sounds, perfumes and images contribute to shape the story and the emotions.

An amazing tour ever thanks to a modern educational path - enriched by panels and multimedia installations - that accompanies us through the origins of the violin and the technical revolution by Antonio Stradivari, to show us how instruments are built, from Stradivari's original gear, to arrive at the "Room of the Treasures" where antique violins, original Stradivari, Amati and Guarneri, built between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries are kept as jewels. Among these we mention "Il Cremonese" of Stradivari 1715 or the violin "Hammerle" by Nicolò Amati of 1658, who entered in the history of music.

And if it is exciting to see a genuine Stradivarius close up, or the violin Guarneri del Gesù, preferred by Paganini, listen to notes is pure poetry, it's like touching the sky. Because it is precisely for the excellent sound, which reaches absolute perfection, that the most famous musicians choose Stradivarius instruments, Guarneri, Amati. The visit to the Museum therefore reaches the peak at the end of the journey with a musical moment: the audition of one of the instruments of the historical collections, taken from the showcase periodically to prove themselves to the audience for the visitors.

Everything you need to know about Japan

Japan is a country of stark contrasts. On one hand it’s steeped in traditional culture and rituals founded thousands of years ago, on the other hand it’s technological advancement and ever changing fashions continually test the limits of imagination and ingenuity. Japan is a country in a state of constant flux, a country whose progress is tempered with tradition. This duality makes it such a unique and fascinating travel destination.

Many ask when its best to travel to Japan or how many days should be spent there, especially with the Olympic Games coming up, while the real answer lies within the travelers’ personal interests. Japan is a beautiful country filled with hidden gems and activities for both cultural seekers and the adventurous guests. The cherry blossoms in spring attract more than 1.7 million travelers to visit Japan with numbers growing every year. Festive events called “Hanami” or viewing of flowers are also popular among locals which spread out onto all four islands of Japan. While during summer, guests can explore Japan in traditional yukata clothing and enjoy the firework festivals, autumn leaves contribute to the scenic background when travelers visit the ancient capital of Japan, Kyoto, filled with deep cultural roots providing many UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the golden pavilion, with its upper levels covered in gold leaf while the structure is being reflected in the pond. Ski and hot spring resorts can provide an unforgettable vacation for winter travelers with experiences like entering an igloo, while drinking out of a glass made out of ice in Hokkaido. History lovers would enjoy going to Himeji Castle also known as White Heron Castle. It is one of the twelve original castles in Japan and is covered in white paint. Another example, situated in Matsumoto, is Crow Castle which is covered in black paint.

The language barrier only exists for travelers in search of an in depth experience in Japan, one that is off the beaten path, thus great to have a professional guide introducing the ins and outs of the country. Although credit cards can be used in major cities and shopping malls, most local stores and restaurants do not accept them. It is highly recommended to carry cash during the trip, as Japan is still more of a paper money based society. If there is a need to withdraw or exchange currency in Japan, travelers should do so at the convenience of the airport, a place where exchange rates doesn’t differ much than that of an outside bank. Other cultural differences including tipping, which is not needed, at times you may see an attendant chasing travelers down the street thinking the money left on the table for gratitude was left there by accident. Be sure to read up on the Japanese cultural differences or consult with a Japanese travel specialist before embarking on you next visit to Japan.

A Tour through Austria

Like a well-orchestrated symphony, Austria strikes a chord with its impressive Habsburg palaces, baroque abbeys and picturesque landscapes. One day you’re cresting alpine summits, the next you’re strolling around imperial Vienna.

Located at the very heart of Europe, Austria is bordered by the Czech Republic and Germany to the north, Hungary and Slovakia to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. Even though the country’s official language is German, the majority of the population speaks local Austrian dialects of German as their native language.

Whether in Graz, Innsbruck or Vienna: you encounter the legacy of Austria’s imperial past wherever you go in this country – but nowhere, of course, in such concentration as in the country’s capital, where you can sense this grand imperial atmosphere even when visiting one of the city’s many historic coffeehouses. Vienna can boast two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the historic city centre and the Baroque ensemble of Schönbrunn Palace and its grounds. One can find art treasures and magnificent buildings all over the former imperial capital and the work of “classical pop stars” such as Mozart, Strauss, Mahler, Haydn and Schubert echo as loudly as ever at lavishly gilded concert halls.

Salzburg holds a soft-spot for many international visitors in part due to one of the world’s most beloved musicals “The Sound of Music”, but more rightly so because this UNESCO-recognised city truly stands out for its baroque architecture and a music scene dominated by its most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. With a culturally vibrant festival scene, including the famous Salzburg Festival, Salzburg also waltzes between its green setting surrounded by a natural landscape with plenty of nearby mountain and lakes scenery.

Apart from its impressive cities, Austria's lyrical landscapes reach beyond the snowy realms of the Alps. Trace the meandering Danube through the World Heritage Site Wachau, passing vineyards, medieval castles and majestic Benedictine abbeys, make a splash in one of the countless breathtaking mountain lakes or mingle with the locals in wine taverns in rural Burgenland and Styria's gold-tinged vineyards – everybody will find what he is looking for.

Welcome to Austria!
