Celebration Season. It's easy to find things to celebrate -- just noticing what's blooming outside is reason enough. But DC is abuzz with sights and sounds of laughing families & friends gathering for graduations, reunions, weddings, you name it... and I have to say the spirit is pretty infectious. So happy celebration season.

“Creative art is for all time & therefore independent of time…” - Alma Thonas. If you love art, color & just want to immerse yourself in a celebration of beauty & inspiration, go quickly to to catch the Alma Thomas exhibit, ‘Everything Is Beautiful’. My daughter and I spent hours soaking it all in — not only is the exhibit a sweeping celebration of Thomas’ work, but also of her *incredible* spirit and life. A lifelong educator, she started her signature style nature inspired abstracts at age 75 (!), completing one of her largest works, ‘Red Azaleas Singing & Dancing Rock & Roll Music’ at age 86. She defined success on her own terms, immersed herself in her community and as a lifelong educator, encouraged her students to ‘seek out beauty everyday’. She is truly one of the greats and tops on my list of ‘Inspired Women’ (a list I started as a kid, with my grandmother Page as my first entry… which my friends know I also sometimes reference as my list of ‘inspiring zippy older women.’). 🙏

‘Fall Jumble’. Playing with palettes and combos in a favorite little vase. Ultimately, I decided that singular white dahlia was too attention grabbing for the feeling I wanted for this arrangement, so I moved it to a separate bud vase. Little thing, big difference.

“Oh suns and skies and clouds of June, And flowers of June together, Ye cannot rival for one hour October’s bright blue weather; …”. Said hello to a woman passing by and she responded with this verse from Helen Jackson’s ‘October’s Bright Blue Weather.’ Smiling broadly, she recounted how this poem, she laboriously memorized for a 5th grade homework assignment, brings her joy in her 80’s by sharing it with strangers on beautiful October days. 😀 Passing along her sweet gift.

Opportunity. I recently came across this charming courtyard and while ‘wowed’ with its the stonework & wisteria, I was also struck by its emptiness. But clear space is opportunity, and as in life, sometimes open space helps us see things clearly and paves the way for new creativity. This little courtyard became in my mind’s eye a creative opportunity — imagining it with color & life: a space for resting & for gathering…containers overflowing with seasonal greens & blooms, comfortable benches, a cafe table & chairs for gathering… twinkle lights for night and the sound of happy chatter intermixed with live music. Hoping your weekend is filled with opportunity 😊
